What our customers say about their holidays

    • Anthony - Verified booking

Without a doubt, the dirtiest place I’ve ever stayed.

We thought the fact it had a 5 star rating meant that previous complaints had been addressed. We were so wrong! Every single surface had a layer of dust on it. Not to mention the many dead bugs we found throughout the property. We actually spent an hour cleaning but gave up as it would’ve taken a whole day to get the place even remotely clean. The kitchen was disgusting. There were old sausages and trays dripping with grease in the oven. The tops of the cupboards were thick with grease and dust. Inside the cupboards was no better, with one full of dog hair and dust. The beds are beyond uncomfortable, with the main bed having seemingly no cushioning other than springs that dig into you making sleep almost impossible. The en suite in the main bedroom had a rotten, mouldy doorframe and the toilet roll holder is hanging off the wall. The other bedroom is barely any better but my son said he was very uncomfortable. The main light over the dining table had so much dust on it that it was grey. I cleaned it to reveal it was actually black. The fan above the living space had thick black dust all over the blades but is too high to clean. The tv unit seems to be held up with the help of a board game. We would have complained immediately but it’s obvious from the previous reviews that nothing would have been done so we just did our best to enjoy the holiday and spent as little time as possible in the cabin. Ignoring the issues, the actual holiday village is great. We’ve stayed before so know the standards that can usually be expected. The location is great and it’s easy to travel between the various nearby towns of Filey, Scarborough and Bridlington etc. just a shame that the sea dog is in the state it’s in.

For this particular property, we would suggest that more attention to detail is required.

For example, the hob had not been cleaned thoroughly and the oven shelving was definitely in need of a clean. The fan oven did not cook equally on the top and bottom shelves and there was no lid on the kitchen bin. The shelving under the lounge TV was dusty and the remote control for the lounge TV did not work due to needing replacement batteries. Blinds or curtains for the window in the bathroom would also have been appreciated for some privacy. On the one occasion we had to call the owner, (Steve), he quickly responded and was able to resolve our query regarding the heating. We really appreciated the location of the cottage and the fact that it had a fenced off patio area, as this was ideal for us with a dog. The meadow area near to the cottage was also great for walking the dog and so too was the short walk to the dog friendly beach. The click and collect meal from the on-site pub was inedible, which was a shame as when we had previously stayed at The Bay, prior to the pandemic, we had really enjoyed the pub meal there. The fact that we had a positive experience at that pub during our previous time at The Bay, together with the pub being dog friendly, was a deciding factor in us staying at The Bay again. We were able to have good days out during our break, with The Bay being in a good location, and so would consider The Bay again for a possible future break. We will also use Sykes Cottages again, as we have had positive experiences with them in previous years, which include the way in which our previous two bookings during last year were cancelled and managed due to COVID 19.

We had a really wonderful stay and would love to come back.

The lodge and facilities were all exceptional. There are a few minor things that it would have been nice to have: Visitors book (with a pocket for the leisure pass as we couldn’t find it until we left - thankfully the leisure centre staff weren’t bothered) Personalised recommendations re places to eat and visit rather than just menus Jar of dog treats? Chopping board Cling film / foil and/or sandwich bags Washing up liquid, laundry liquid (little samples for one wash would be fine) Salt and pepper Hand Soap in bathrooms, cups for toothbrushes *****New Pillows and mattress needed urgently for master bed *****Hoover not working Took us ages to work out that the bathroom lights didn’t have a switch!!!! First fire in log burner equipment would have been nice as we arrived after shop closed. Extra tea towel (s) Instructions for washing machine Nespresso machine Blankets for sofa or extra blankets and pillows in kids bedroom Plastic plates and bowls for kids Small saucepan Again, many thanks for our stay it was the best short break we’ve had in a long while. The easy check in, log burner, pool, and access to the beach were all highlights, the friendly staff, little shop, dog friendly beach, full size dishwasher and fab showers would bring us back in a heartbeat.

Dear Sirs The facilities were an absolute disgrace, especially when you consider it cost in excess of £1000 to stay.

The whole place was covered in dust, cob webs and general grime, wifi was non existent and the furniture was in horrendous condition, property was in desperate need of painting as well as a deep clean. Have the owners heard of a thing called COVID 19? Outside decking and furniture needs attention also. The only reason I didn't complain while I was there was due to the fact my wife asked me to not make a fuss as it would spoil our break. As a cleaning business owner for over 20 years I would strongly urge your management to vet the condition of the properties you let and that the property owner spend some of the money they charge to invest in the property urgently. We have stayed at the Bay on 2 other occasions and had no issues but if I am being honest this experience had left me wondering if I should use Sykes again or stay at the Bay. The state of this particular property has insured I would never stay at the Sea Dog again. As I am a repeat customer with Sykes, I would be most keen to get a reply to this email as well as a token gesture from either yourselves or the property owner for my families experience and the obscene overcharge I have incurred. Arrived to find we couldn’t get in as door would not open, this had been mentioned in a review in Nov 2022 but obviously had not been fixed, after many attempts it opened.

Next issue was it was freezing, I appreciate the price of electric but could the heating of not been switched on an hour before, Mum is 82 and was frozen, no thermostat so found the welcome pack and discovered all run by the boiler so switched it on but lit the wood burner too, brought our own logs and some fire lighters glad we did as nothing provided. We have booked 2 of these Beach Houses before and they are all set out the same and always loved them but I was quite disappointed with this one, I realise that the information does not mention providing, toiletries but no hand soap or anything to wash your hands when soap dish and dispensers provided, well in one bathroom anyway. kitchen lacking basics like dish cloth, washing up liquid, scissors and clean cups, washed everything before use. The shower in the Jack & Jill bathroom was dirty at the bottom near the door runners and when you turn it on it leaks all over the floor. It isn’t a cheap stay for 3 days but I would expect a chair in the lounge not to be shedding the leather as you sit in it. Didn’t spoil our weekend but not knowing if we can get back through the dodgy front door was no fun.
