What our customers say about their holidays

    • P - Verified booking

We would very highly recommend the lodge we stayed in and the location.

This was an absolutely stunning setting in a quiet peaceful location with stunning wooded pathways for dog walking and general relaxing strolls. The Lodge was warm and welcoming and had every amenity needed to make a wonderful comfortable stay. The furnishings and beds were super comfortable and clean. and the outside patio area idyllic for sharing a morning coffee or evening wine and chatting. The only reservation is bring an internet booster along as the wifi is rather slow, cellphone reception is great, just wifi for laptops etc is limited if say you had to do an hour two working during your stay you might struggle with the wifi speed. But that is a minor niggle, and the benefits hugely outweigh that small issue. The easy minute or two drive from the lodge to Saltburn by the Sea brings you to the beach and the pier and a wonderful collection of sea view restaurants, pubs and chip shops or to the magnificemt clifftop walks on the Cleveland way giving just stunning views over the bay. As you can see we are besotted and are missing it now we are home. We just have to visit again !

The location was brilliant, peaceful surroundings, easy for exploring everything Northumblerland has to offer.

The lodge itself is a nice size and well equipped. However, the mattresses were the most unformfortable we've ever stayed on. The main sofa just sank.. The table was 'sticky'. The dishwasher didn't clean effectively once while we were then and then refused to clean at all. It clearly hasn't worked well for a while since most of the glasses and cutlery were unclean when we arrived. The owner was apologetic and did call for an engineer but unfortunately they were unable to come before we left. The kitchen was otherwise well equipped, though some items were broken and in need of replacement. Sykes need to make clear on each listing what the situation is re. Cleaning. We would never willingly chose a place which expects you to clean, rather than just tidy on the last day of your holiday. That along with the dishwasher being broken meant a lot of cleaning on holiday, which we wouldn't have chosen to do. This place could be a 5* with a bit of tlc and replacing some of the essentials with more comfortable items.

The cottage itself was in the perfect location for what we wanted in terms of rural setting and ease of exploring te area.

The problem with this cottage was the inaccurate representation of the standard of the cottage, and the huge failure in not mentioning that this was a smoking cottage - I, along with my young son (age 2) have severe asthma and both had issues throughout the holiday with the unground smell (especially in the lounge) of stale smoke. On the Thursday night (2nd Nov) my asthma was so bad we decided to pack up and head home. On top of this the cleanliness of the lodge left a lot to be desired, along with the rubdown quality of all the furnishings - the curtains in the main lounge area were disgraceful. To add insult to injury, we looked at our friends lodge who paid exactly the same price as us, to see there's was a much higher calibre, well maintained and very clean. Overall a very disappointing experience with the only redeeming feature being the locality.

A very frosty reception at the hotel to pick up the cottage keys.

Greeted with a surly "hotel bar out of bounds", "hotel restaurant out of bounds" and "parts of the grounds out of bounds". Now, I know we didn't book a hotel stay, but surely a "welcome" would have been nice followed by " oh, by the way, we have a function this weekend, so unfortunately......." The cottage was very cold on arrival - 2nd week in November and heating not on in preparation for our arrival. The state of some of the crockery and kitchen utensils was awful. I have a picture of the oven tray if you like - disgusting! Glass-ware and cutlery far from clean - not what I would have expected. The sofa in Snowdrop was most uncomfortable and should be replaced. Advertised broadband/wifi was very sketchy to say the least. Not usable most of the time and had to resort to data-roaming.

This was a very comfortable lodge in a beautiful location.

It was well provided with oven ware and crockery. It mentions a sea view in the description which is actually only visible when you lean over the fence at the bottom of the garden. The countryside views are wonderful however. The garden is described as private but it is not fenced off and open to the parking area and driveway, which could cause a problem for those with young children and is not somewhere to sit for breakfast etc. I have also never been asked to strip the beds before I leave a Sykes property before which wasn't a problem but surely part of the owners cleaning routine before the next guests arrive. Having said that it wouldn't stop me from booking this lodge again if we revisit Northumberland.
