Holiday cottages near Longleat Safari Park

Pack your bags, grab your coat and get ready for the drive of a lifetime, with a visit to one of Britain’s most incredible attractions. In 1966, Longleat opened its doors and became the first drive-through safari park outside of Africa. Today, the park’s 9,000 acres are home to over 500 incredible wild animals. From striped skunks to Cuban crocodiles, European elks to whistling ducks, all the way up to jungle royalty, with two prides of African lions.

Of course, with eight separate animal areas and over 500 new friends to make, one day won’t be nearly enough time to spend on this wild adventure. That’s why we’ve found you hundreds of gorgeous holiday cottages nearby to help make sure you have time to see everything that Longleat has to offer. Not only will a private holiday rental be a peaceful place to recoup after a long day of adventuring, but you’ll also be near some of England’s most iconic attractions, including Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral.

Best of all, self-catering accommodation near Longleat is some of the finest in the country. Whatever kind of short break you’re after, the county of Wiltshire can provide. Whether you’re craving something as simple as an en suite bathroom, as rustic as holiday accommodation on a working farm, or as downright brilliant as a back-garden golf course, all you have to do it ask.

There’s no shortage of reasons to visit Longleat, but one of our favourites is that it’s an attraction that has to be seen to be believed. While it’s been over 50 years since the park opened, to this day, while trundling through its incredible grounds, it’s no easier to believe that you’re in the middle of the English countryside, and not driving through the depths of rural Africa. What’s more, once you’re done exploring its on-site Savannah, and various interactive animal areas, you can head up to the stately manor house itself, for an incredible meal at Emma’s Kitchen.

Things to do near Longleat Safari Park

    Stonehenge

There are a few attractions that make the British countryside what it is and one of the most iconic is Stonehenge. We’ve all seen the pictures of this prehistoric monument, standing proud and stoic atop the Wiltshire hills, but you can’t appreciate it’s scale until you see it in the flesh. Each stone stands at an incredible 13 feet high, seven feet wide and weighs an immense 25 tonnes. What’s more, this world-famous attraction oozes mystery like almost no-where else on the planet.

    Salisbury Cathedral

The medieval magnificence of Salisbury Cathedral is an unmissable attraction. As well as boasting incredible gothic architecture and the tallest spire in Britain, the cathedral is home to the Magna Carta. This text is one of the most important in English history and is one of the pillars on which our society stands. It established the idea that no-one was above the law, not even the king, and everyone had the right to a fair trial.

    Hampton Court Palace

A beautiful old palace, full of grand rooms, beautifully landscaped grounds and the famously haunted gallery, all the family will enjoy a trip to Hampton Court Palace. Home to some of England’s most infamous monarchs, the whole palace is steeped in history, treachery and intrigue. Wander the stunning grounds, be dazzled by a replica of King Henry VIII’s crown and get lost in the most famous maze in the whole world. Hampton Court Palace is a very special spot which really brings history to life.

    Wiltshire Museum

Many connoisseurs of the English countryside say you should visit Wiltshire Museum before heading to Stonehenge, and we can certainly see why. Its award-winning displays add an incredible amount of colour to the rich and mystical history surrounding the iconic rocks. The museum tells the story of 500,000 years of Wiltshire’s past succinctly and compellingly. It’s also very family-friendly, helping kids can get hands-on with the history with events like mini-Stonehenge building and Bronze Age dress-up.

    Westbury White Horse

Etched into the English countryside, lying just below an Iron Age hill fort, the Westbury White Horse is both a striking and mysterious sight. The origins of this huge horse are obscure. Many claim it was made to commemorate King Alfred’s victory at the battle of Ethandun, but the truth is, we can’t be sure. All we really know is, today, it stands as one of England’s most beautiful and iconic images, and an incredible photo opportunity for any tourist.

    Stourhead Garden

Stourhead is one of the world’s most famous and, more importantly, most beautiful gardens. Inspired by the work of the great 17th-century landscape painters, it’s a place where art and nature intertwine, to create over a thousand acres of stunning beauty, spell-binding colour and revitalising calm. There are reasons to visit Stourhead year-round, but we’re particular fans of how it looks in Autumn. During the colder months, the sweeping lawns take on a rusty colour scheme, which exudes an English kind of magic.
