Guests say

Herdwick Cottage receives high praise for its cleanliness, comfort, and well-equipped facilities, with personal touches and a welcome pack adding to the experience. The location in Brampton is appreciated for its proximity to walking areas and attractions, though light sleepers may find the nearby church bells challenging. Overall, guests find the cottage to be a warm, homely base for exploring Cumbria.

Guests consistently describe the cottage as spotless and very clean, indicating a high standard of cleanliness throughout the property.

The location is generally well-regarded for its convenience to Brampton's main street and nearby attractions, though some guests were not expecting the courtyard setting and others mentioned the disturbance from church bells.

Reviewers find the beds and furnishings very comfortable, contributing to a homely and welcoming atmosphere. However, there is a mention of a single bedroom being uncomfortably hot due to a non-opening skylight.

The cottage is praised for being well-equipped, especially the kitchen, and for thoughtful extras like guidebooks and maps. Some minor issues with heating and a child lock were noted, but overall the facilities meet guests' needs.

The owner's thoughtfulness is highlighted through personal touches and a welcome pack, which are greatly appreciated by guests. It should be noted that such gifts, while delightful, are not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

Nestled in the market town of Brampton in Cumbria on the fringes of the Lake District National Park and close to Hadrian’s Wall Path is Herdwick Cottage. This beautifully presented cottage is just a five-minute stroll into the centre of Brampton and is an ideal base for walkers and families exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders. After a busy day hiking, cycling, or wandering, kick off your walking boots before sinking into one of the plush velvet green sofas and flicking on the Smart TV; give your feet a rest and unwind here before preparing dinner in the fully equipped kitchen/diner.

The rustic wooden dining table is a good space for five to dine together, maybe with a glass of wine or perhaps wander onto the patio surrounded by a pretty garden with the sound of the church clock of St Martin’s. When sleep calls, retire to any of the bedrooms: there is a king size double, a twin and a single room all serviced by a sleek modern bathroom. Brampton offers a range of amenities including friendly pubs, Berry’s Tearoom, Cranston’s Foodhall, farm shop and gift shops. Spend the day exploring the historic and beautiful Lanercost Priory close to Hadrian’s Wall; walk around the stunning Talkin Tarn; visit some of the many historic sites such as Birdoswald Roman Fort, or maybe wander in the beautiful and ancient Miltonrigg Woods.

All these are within a ten-mile radius of Brampton. The Pennine Way is an amazing long-distance trail only half an hour’s drive away within the North Pennines AONB and The Lake District National Park is filled with walks and trails where you can experience yet more breath-taking countryside of Cumbria. Choose Herdwick Cottage as your base for a relaxing countryside retreat to Brampton, Cumbria.

Brampton is the ideal location from which to explore Hadrian's Wall. The town's history dates back to the Roman occupation, Border reivers from Scotland, and the Jacobite uprisings. Additionally, Bonnie Prince Charlie established his headquarters in one of Brampton's old buildings. In the town's centre is Moot Hall, which was constructed in 1817 and now houses the Tourist Information Centre. To the east of the town is a large motte that is 135 feet tall and features a statue of the 7th Earl of Carlisle. A few miles outside of Brampton, Talkin Tarn Country Park can be found. It encompasses 120 acres of farmland and forest, 65 of which comprise the Tarn, a 10,000-year-old glacial lake fed by underground springs. Two miles away is Gelt Woods, an rspb nature reserve and ancient woodland with the River Gelt running through it. Brampton is an ideal location from which to explore this historic and beautiful region.

I'd had a Lovely time, with my Dad, and had enjoyed my 62nd Birthday on Saturday 8th Feb, in the Market Town I'b been born in. We managed to Visit Dads sister Winnie, 3 times over the Week (She is suffering Dementia, and will not remember her brother in the near future). We also Visited, My Mums side of the families Niece Jill. I'd contacted Sally, to let her know I'd Left her a Sheep Themed Thank You Present, and afew other items, for the Cottage. I had issues with The Sofas being too low, but solved the issue, by sitting on The Puffey, That brought me up to the level of getting up off the low level sofa. (Ironically, it was Dad that surgested the use of the puffey, to give me the height, I needed to get up off the sofa, without struggling). The Welcome pack was well liked, Dad eat the Sweets in 2 Days. lol. The Weather was colder than Dad, had remembered, thankfully I'd brought some thermal gear with me, and he was a lot more warmer and happier. Both me and Dad are smokers (we was good boys and smoked outside). A small Awing, that we could of opened, for when it was raining, would of been nice, (Ibought 2 umbrellas, from a Charity shop). Almost everthing that was in The Cottage, including the left over coffees, tea bags, etc, was very much appreciated. I left my half of Hot Chocolate, for any other future guest, that would like it. and I left a big cup and some butter knives. (Some of the few items, I'd given towards the Cottage). I will be booking from Sally again, next time I need to come up to Cumbria, from Kent. As I got 7 days there, for the Price of 3 nights in a Hotel, and we felt more at home, which made the trip a lot more enjoyable than we'd even hoped for). On the Way home, I went to My Son's (Nr Wigan). To see my New Grand Child Number 14, called Renesmae, who Arrived on 12th Feb. (and she slept the whole time, but considering - She wasn't due until 3rd of March.) lol. You are welcome to use my aka Delstuart1963. (my first name and middle name combined).

The cottage is beautifully furnished and very well equipped. The welcome goodies were much appreciated. Brampton is a lovely village and the cottage is ideally situated for easy access to the shops. The only downside is the church bells which chime throughout the night.

We loved the personal touches the owner had added around the place and it was very clean and welcoming. We will definitely be looking to book with Sykes Cottages again for our next UK holiday. We will be going to direct. Etc time rather than through Expedia who messed up the original booking.
