The Malthouse in Matlock is a well-received holiday cottage, praised for its spaciousness, historical charm, and suitability for large groups. Guests enjoyed the multiple kitchens, comfortable bedrooms, and the property's proximity to local amenities and scenic walks. While some guests noted issues with maintenance and the busy road location, the overall experience was positive, with many expressing a desire to return.
Guests generally found The Malthouse to be clean throughout, with modern and well-maintained bathrooms. However, there were isolated comments about a sticky residue on kitchen worktops and a damp smell in one of the bedrooms, suggesting room for improvement.
The property's location in Cromford was appreciated for its convenience to shops, pubs, and walks. However, some guests were disappointed by the proximity to a busy road and the lack of rural seclusion, which was not clearly indicated in the property's description.
The Malthouse was lauded for its comfortable furniture and beds, with plenty of room for guests to relax. Some guests mentioned issues with uncomfortable mattresses and noise from the road, but these were not widespread concerns.
Facilities were generally well-regarded, especially the multiple kitchens and en-suite bathrooms. However, guests noted some maintenance issues such as non-functioning ovens and dishwashers, and a lack of clarity on waste disposal. The unique features like the mill workings added to the property's appeal.
There were no mentions of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the hosts. Therefore, it is not possible to provide a score in this category.

Such a lovely setting. There were ample pots, pans, cutlery and dishes etc. I took extra toilet rolls as looked at a few reviews and it was a good shout. The beds were super comfy with lovely fresh linen. The village is a 5 minute walk and some lovely pubs and cafes. We ate at the Greyhound and the food was amazing with speedy service. The owner has been very accomodating and so helpful. We hope to re visit in the future and would definitely recommend.

The longer we stayed the more the care and detail in its realisation became apparent. Once used to where everything was, we used the middle kitchen and diner for breakfast and lunches. The lower kitchen was then used for our main meals. The cooks could work without disturbance. The top floor lounge was perfect for our end of day gatherings. The photos don't do it justice. Certainly don't believe any negative comments. It was a delight and fun to adapt to the conversion. It does work. Everyone in our group liked their rooms, one even described it as the nicest room she had ever stayed in. The pre-arrival information was really helpful it even included a plan to help us decide which of the twin rooms we wanted as doubles. One quick message to the owner and the heating was adjusted remotely. Impressive. It isn't really a house for anyone disabled although the main stair is wide and soft enabling pretty good access to all floors, and very tall people need to watch for a few Low flying beams. Great location. There are even two brilliant bus routes linking Derby, matlock, haddon hall, bakewell and Buxton. Walk from the house into cromford to find scarthins bookshop, pub and wonderful quirky shops. We were blessed with beautiful autumn weather in November. Yes, we would recommend this house.

The two lounges were very comfortable as were the beds. The main problem we felt was that more attention needs to be paid to the kitchens. Three dishwashers and only one worked. Three washing machines but no racks to dry either washing or wet walking gear. An abundance of champagne flutes but only 7 wine glasses and no small glasses suitable for fruit juice or whisky. No working tin opener and only one bottle opener. Only 4 cereal bowls. We seemed to spend endless time going between the three floors to try to locate suitable crockery etc. Surely each kitchen should have the correct amount of crockery/glassware for the number of seats at the table. We had a fabulous time but the lack of care regarding kitchenware really lets this property down and in that respect is the worst we have ever stayed in.
