Snaptrip says

Acorn Cottage in Coniston is a charming property praised for its tranquil setting and stunning location, ideal for walks and enjoying the Lake District's beauty. Guests appreciate the cosy atmosphere, comfortable beds, and the garden's suitability for dogs. While some noted the need for minor TLC and mentioned issues with internet connectivity and hot water, the overall experience is one of a peaceful retreat with spectacular views and local wildlife.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The cottage generally receives positive remarks for cleanliness, with guests finding it clean and well-presented. However, some guests noted areas that could benefit from deeper cleaning, such as the oven and kitchenware, which slightly lowers the score.

The location is highly praised for its beauty, tranquility, and proximity to local walks and nature. The remote setting is seen as a positive aspect, although the access road's condition and the shared garden are noted by some.

Guests find the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, especially with the woodburner. However, concerns about heating in the bedrooms and the adequacy of the showers for larger groups slightly affect the comfort score.

The cottage is well-equipped for a holiday stay, with a good supply of cutlery and kitchen implements. However, guests have reported issues with the internet connection, hot water supply, and some maintenance aspects, which impacts the facilities score.

While guests mention a welcome note and the provision of maps and reading material, there is insufficient information on whether gifts or thoughtful gestures were consistently provided to guests, thus a score cannot be accurately given.

About this property

This stunning terraced cottage sits in a row of eight properties that were once owned by author Beatrix Potter, in a wonderful elevated position, within the Bakestone Barrow Wood, nestled between Coniston and Little Langdale in the Lake District. Acorn Cottage is a spacious, beautifully designed, three-storey property in a tranquil, yet central location, ideal for a family or group of five wanting to enjoy a getaway to the Lake District. Enter the property into the sitting room, filled with stunning features, from original flagged flooring to a feature fireplace housing a woodburning stove, while the sofas and armchair offers a selection of relaxing places to sit and enjoy a book from the shelves that are built into an alcove, or to watch a programme on the TV or to simply admire the countryside view. The well-equipped kitchen/diner has the same original flooring, a former feature fireplace, sleek granite worktops and all the modern conveniences you could wish for, including an integrated dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer, while the dining area provides a space for the whole group to sit down and enjoy meals together. Head up to the first floor to find a bright and spacious king-sized double bedroom, decorated with neutral tones, with plenty of storage and lovely window seat from which to admire the view; this floor also houses a family bathroom with a shower over bath and a further shower room with walk-in shower, so you can choose how to prepare for each day. The second floor features two further bedrooms; a generously-sized single with double glazed Velux window and plenty of storage, along with a double bedroom with built in wardrobes and a Velux window. Outside there is off-road parking for two cars and a spacious garden with a lawn and a patio area, a real sun trap, with a picnic bench, perfect for enjoying breakfast and lunch outside on a sunny day, along with a lockable private shed where you can store bikes. The village of Coniston is three miles from the cottage, with several restaurants, pubs, shops, as well as The Ruskin Museum attraction. Acorn cottage is ideally suited for walkers of all ages and abilities, with many low and high level walks straight from the cottage door and for the serious and not-so-serious road cyclists and mountain bikers, who too can explore the many routes from the door. Walkers will relish the challenge of hiking up The Old Man of Coniston and enjoying picturesque views of Coniston Lake from the top, while the lake itself offers plenty of pretty walking trails, and why not travel in style on the National Trust's Steam Yacht Gondola?. Explore the vast woodland of Grizedale Forest, (for mountain and gravel bikers the Northface Trail is not to be missed) and the picturesque Tarn Hows, while the National Trust-owned Hill Top, the former home of Beatrix Potter, and the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead offer a glimpse into the author's life along with Esthwaite Water, thought to be the inspiration of much of her work, along with that of poet William Wordsworth. Bowness-on-Windermere and Lake Windermere are slightly further afield, where you can climb Orrest Head, and enjoy sweeping views across the lake and the fells beyond, visit Windermere Jetty, a museum of boats, steam and stories, and wander the grounds of the National Trust's Wray Castle, a 19th century Victorian neo-gothic house open to the public all year round. Make Acorn Cottage with its central lakes location the tranquil base for your next Lake District holiday.

The scenic village of Coniston is surrounded by lovely Lake District National Park scenery, making it a superb base for touring. Located at the head of Coniston Water, nearby tourist attractions of Hawkshead, Ambleside, Windermere and Grasmere are all just a short drive away. There are superb walking, mountain biking and climbing opportunities on Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam, with lovely woodland trails at Grizedale Forest. For watersports enthusiasts, the quiet lake is ideal for dinghy sailing and canoeing, whilst the less active can enjoy a leisure cruise on the beautiful steam yacht 'Gondola’. Nearby attractions include the award-winning village of Hawkshead, home of the Beatrix Potter Gallery, Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin, Tarn Hows, one of the most visited beauty spots in the country and Esthwaite Water, famous for its fishing. The latch on said door is faulty and it will nip the fingers if you’re not careful. The rear step has a loose triangle of sharp edged broken slate. The grass hadn’t been cut, a foot long! My service dog got a tick on both days we spent entirely in the garden. £45 per tick from the excellent vets in Ambleside. The garden is a haven for midges, it’s quite a marsh beyond the gate. Patio and garden are not private, having strangers mill around your back door is not relaxing or pleasant. The bath was hugely disappointing, the hot water is pond coloured and definitely not inviting a long relaxing soak. We all chose the electric shower instead! The laminated signage (of which there are many) don’t add anything to the overall ambience of rural cottage. Be aware that no washing powder nor dishwasher tablets are included in the price. Some cutlery had caked on foodstuffs. Despite previous comments (we read all before booking) still only the one pint glass. Kitchen is poorly lit, I’ll thought out and we all chuckled sitting at the table; with our elbows at shoulder level (Low chairs & high table)! Don’t inspect the mattress or bedding until the end of your stay would be my advice. Don’t expect any phone signal nor any useable Wi-Fi. The router blinks red 99% of the time. Don’t expect any help whatsoever if you’re stuck with no water. Water being essential for life; I’d not recommend this cottage. Excellent location but too many negatives. The very long black hair remains where I found it; on my sink, between the taps!
