Ghyll Foot Cottage in Ambleside is praised for its excellent central location and characterful charm. Guests appreciate the comfortable beds, well-equipped kitchen, and homely living room with a log burner. The property's proximity to local amenities and walking areas is a highlight, making it a convenient base for exploring the Lake District.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Reviews on cleanliness are mixed, with several guests finding the cottage clean and tidy, while others report issues such as dust, stains, and a musty smell. The property seems to be well-maintained in some areas but lacking in others.

The cottage's location is highly praised for being central and convenient, with easy access to shops, pubs, restaurants, and local attractions. The provision of a parking permit is also appreciated by guests.

Guests find the beds comfortable and the living areas cosy, particularly noting the log burner. However, some guests mention issues with the size of the bed in the master bedroom and unstable bannisters.

Facilities are generally well-regarded, especially the well-equipped kitchen and modern bathroom. However, there are several mentions of maintenance issues such as a broken tumble dryer, wobbly bannisters, and the need for blinds in certain windows.

There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the property owners towards the guests, therefore a score cannot be provided.

About this property

Situated in the heart of Ambleside village, this traditional whitewashed character cottage has been lovingly restored retaining much of the original charm whilst adding everything you could need for a memorable stay. Tucked away near to the village's main street in the heart of Ambleside, the cosy cottage has a woodburning stove and window seats offering a tranquil retreat and a great place to sit and watch the village. Leave the car behind, and explore the nearby Stock Ghyll Falls, or the beautiful walk to Grasmere along the shores of Rydal Water. For a more challenging walk head up to Fairfield Horseshoe one of the classic Lake District Walks. Literary fans can easily visit Rydal Mount, the family home of William Wordsworth, or simply enjoy the eclectic selection of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes that Ambleside has to offer.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

It smells damp and it could benefit from a refurbishment. Top floor was lovely and middle floor comfortable

Clean. Particularly pleased with the lovely bathroom. Bed in main bed room is lovely and large but really too large considering the awkwardness of maneuvering around the bed due to furniture and head height especially at night. Could have been improved by still large but slightly narrower bed. Really appreciated laundry facilities and especially tumble dryer. Disappointed with lack of soap and washing up liquid as just basics for such a nice property. Small moans only. Really a lovely place and would stay again and recommend to those who can manage stairs comfortably. Many thanks Mary Hartery for Mary and Steve

Kitchen fitted with all you need and more, beds are comfortable and upstairs bathroom is great with shower and hot water. Rooms are all good size and was more than sufficient space for family of 4x. Park permit provided and found available space in main car park every time, c 15min walk (pretty standard for Ambleside). Property could do with a more thorough clean but overall very affordable, convenient and great base for discovering amazing Lakes.
