Reviews indicate a mix of experiences regarding cleanliness. Some guests found the cottage to be dusty with cobwebs and in need of a deep clean, while others described it as clean and tidy. The presence of cleanliness issues in several reviews suggests room for improvement.

The location is highly praised for its proximity to Ambleside and stunning views. The cottage is on a hill, which provides beautiful vistas but may be challenging for those with mobility issues. Overall, guests are pleased with the location despite the steep climb.

Guests generally find the cottage comfortable, particularly noting the comfortable beds and cosy atmosphere. However, some guests mentioned issues with soft mattresses and a lack of seating in the living area, which slightly detracts from the overall comfort score.

Facilities are adequate, but several reviews mention maintenance issues such as problems with the boiler, heating control, and leaks. The cottage is well-equipped, but the need for repairs and updates to some appliances affects the score.

There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the owners. Therefore, it is not possible to provide a score for this category.

About this property

Positioned within walking distance to the facilities of Ambleside is this charming, stone-built property, Penny Red Cottage. Taking its name from the little red letter box set in the end wall of the building, this Victorian cottage has been refurbished into a contemporary style that is suited for families or two couples wanting to break away to the heart of the Lake District. You enter this inviting dwelling straight into the open-plan living area where all can take a seat beside the warming fire and discuss the plans for holiday. Resting just beyond is the well-appointed kitchen with white cabinets and a tiled backsplash along with crockery and utensils needed for rustling up some tasty meals. Climb the stairs to reach the first double bedroom, complete with deep set windows and a character fireplace, while the second double and a single can be found on the top floor, this floor offering lovely views to Wansfell. After a tiring day of touring the Lakes, head to the contemporary bathroom and enjoy a relaxing moment in the bath or choose to freshen up with a shower. Ambleside is a small but busy Lake District town and offers an interesting marketplace with a number of independent shops, boutiques, cafés and two supermarkets for grabbing any essentials. If you fancy eating out, there are plenty of superb pubs and restaurants to enjoy, including a Michelin starred restaurant named the Old Stamp House. A short walk from this Ambleside cottage brings you to Bridge House - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and a favourite subject for many artists, and Lake Windermere is on the doorstep. Further afield you may fancy a day trip to Bowness-on-Windermere, Newby Bridge or Coniston, each offering their own culture and atmosphere. Perhaps the challenge of Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain, will be more to your taste? Consider Penny Red Cottage as your quaint holiday home for your next break to the Lake District.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

Lovely cottage in a great location with off-road parking, comfortable to stay in, and very pleased to see a new oven has been installed. However, we noticed a strong damp smell as we entered and the entire property could do with some TLC and a deep clean. The upstairs shower has visible mould and there were a lot of cobwebs in every room. The new fence provides privacy while still allowing views of the fells which is a plus.

Only issues were plumbing problems for dishwasher and washing machine so we couldn’t use these during a two week stay which was an issue, but we love the Lakes so not a lot deters us! Lovely spot.

In a quiet location but only 6 mins walk to shops, pubs etc - a little more on the way back up the hill but it was good exercise. The parking space is a bit awkward to manuver but we managed ok. I'd definitely return to Penny Red in the future.
