Rosewood by the River is a well-loved cottage in Ambleside, praised for its stunning location, comfort, and well-equipped facilities. Guests have enjoyed the beautiful views, the proximity to local walks, and the homely charm of the property. While some minor issues were mentioned, the overall sentiment is highly positive, with many looking forward to returning.
Most guests found Rosewood clean and well-presented, though there were isolated comments about cleanliness not meeting expectations, including some leftover detritus and dust. These seem to be exceptions rather than the rule.
The location is consistently lauded as idyllic, perfect, and brilliant, with easy access to local walks and stunning views over the river. It is a highlight for many guests.
Guests describe the property as comfortable, warm, and uncluttered, with comfortable beds and cosy living spaces. The occasional mention of creaky floorboards does not detract from the overall comfort.
Facilities are generally well-received, with a well-stocked kitchen and generous welcome basket. Some guests suggested improvements such as better cleaning equipment and more consumables, but these are minor compared to the overall satisfaction with the facilities.
The thoughtfulness of the hosts is evident in the welcome basket and well-stocked amenities. However, it should be noted that while gifts like wine and chocolates are mentioned, they are a courtesy and not guaranteed with every stay.
Excellent eco-friendly accommodation for eight in sought-after Skelwith! A love-seat pagoda sits by the rocks and rivulets of the Brathay in the picture-perfect garden of Rosewood By The River, and a luxurious and generously sized garden dining set awaits you on the patio. This is a place to retreat to with friends and family and relax fully in the finest of Lakeland locations!
Like a wooden house from a fairytale, Rosewood By The River perches charmingly on the banks of the Brathay as it flows through the pretty hamlet of Skelwith Bridge. Mature shrubs and trees surround the eco-friendly structure, ideally suited to its surroundings, and the green and shady garden is a magical place to sit and listen to the soothing sound of the waters slipping by.
Inside, the pale greys of the living area are perfectly in tune with your need for relaxation, and the comfortable yet elegant furnishings are echoed throughout, including in the superb glass-ceiling sun-room, and in the sophisticated kitchen, which offers you the pinnacle of the country living experience. Excellent use of glass in Rosewood extends to the bedrooms, and your private retreats are spacious, stylish and pleasingly light-filled.
Skelwith boasts an excellent hotel with walker's bar, along with the well-loved cafe Chesters By The River, which offers a genuinely addictive selection of fine cakes and pastries, excellent coffee, amazing salads, and a winningly relaxed atmosphere for sitting out on the verandah on a sunny day. There is a lovely gift shop attached, too, and we're sure your party will want to stock up on picnic materials here!
Rambling paths run through the fields and woodlands in all directions towards Coniston, Hawkshead, Grasmere and Elterwater. The latter sits in the Great Langdale Valley, in whose mouth your holiday retreat lies. Along with Little Langdale, this is one of the most stunning and sought-after areas in Lakeland, and is full of excellent exploring, climbing, biking and hiking opportunities, including routes up the iconic sharp-peaked Langdale Pikes.
With popular Ambleside and all the attractions of Lake Windermere in easy reach, the location, like the property itself, is a real winner! Rosewood By The River will quickly become a family favourite when you stay with us here.
Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

The views of the river and its garden are magical ,day and night . The house is clean, beautifully decorated with everything we needed for a home away from home It's perfectly located for walks from the door and nearby Coniston and the Langdales The welcome pack was very much appreciated and we hope to return to this lovely home again. Thank you Carol and Keith

Itâs a lovely property in a fabulous location. The kitchen was well equipped, we enjoyed the local artwork on display through the property, and the living spaces were much more spacious and well designed than the online photos suggested. Itâs far too close to Chesterâs so has put some strain on waistlines but we love that place too. We shall return to Rosewood cottage - itâs a lovely place to stay in the lakes.

After an 8hr drive from London as soon as you walk in all the stresses just drain away. The views are amazing and this property is perfect and ticks every box. It's our a second time staying here and I was slightly worried about returning incase it wasn't as good this time but it was even better. The owners have thought of everything. The welcome basket was a really lovely touch. No need to pack hairdryers there's one in every room. Listening to the lake water all night running past the bedroom is absolute heaven. Chesters which is a stones throw away is a great place to have breakfast before a lovely walk/hike which you can do plenty of from the cottage. There was four of us so we had plenty of room we took games with us but the owners have a big box full of games so no need to. I really cannot recommend this property enough. The owners leave you their phone number and reply to any messages straight away we which was brilliant. Perfect property in a perfect location.
