Alnwick Castle, the seat of the Duke of Northumberland, towers over the picturesque and ancient market town of Alnwick. The Castle Gardens, which opened to the public in 2002, are a sight to behold for gardeners of all skill levels, since they contain Europe's largest cascading water feature, a spectacular (and massive) treehouse, a charming rose garden, and a gorgeous, walled ornamental garden. Harry Potter fans will recognise the castle as Hogwarts, the fictional school featured in the series. Since the days of the London to Edinburgh stage coach, the town's small alleys have changed little, and the Market Place, with its stone cross, remains the focal point of the community and the best location for the weekly Saturday market. There is lots to see and do in the area around Alnwick, including miles of golden sand beaches, dozens of castles, and boat journeys to the world-famous Farne Islands. All in all, it's a great base from which to discover Northumberland and its breathtaking Heritage Coast.

All the facilities were available. We enjoyed staying in a comfortable environment with family. We appreciated the welcome hamper. Only a couple of areas for improvement - the whirlpool bath didn't work but I don't think that was specifically advertised in the description, but it was a disappointment. Parking a large car at the front of the house was quite nerve wracking but we parked at the back of the house sometimes, where there was more room, so there was no real issue. The cottages location enabled easy walking access to the nearby town of Alnwick and its facilities. It was a good base to drive to other attractions in the Northumberland area. I'd definitely recommend the cottage to other visitors.

Large shower pleasant to use but nowhere to put soap, shampoo etc. I can recommend a telescopic device (Dunelm Mills) that holds itself by springs to the floor and ceiling. No fixing needed. Also the vertical rod that holds the shower head is loose at the bottom and needs maintenance. It wouldâve been convenient to have a second set of door keys. The sky lounge is a wow feature. Maybe the twin beds would be better in the larger front bedroom. More circulation space. These are minor observations. Overall a comfortable place to be. Seth
