This remote, wonderfully furnished cottage is the ideal stay for families wanting a relaxing break in the countryside. Walk through the entrance of Carleton Mill and upstairs to the accommodation under the eaves, accompanied with the original wooden beams from 1721. Carlisle is set in Cumbria, 10 miles south of the Scottish Borders. During the Middle Ages, Carlisle became a military stronghold and Carlisle Castle, still relatively intact, was built in 1092 by William Rufus, the castle now houses the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the Border Regiment Museum. In the 12th century Henry I allowed the foundation of a priory in Carlisle and the town gained the status of a diocese in 1122, resulting in the priory becoming Carlisle Cathedral. The Settle to Carlisle railway runs across breathtaking scenery and Carlisle Racecourse has a packed fixture list including Ladies Day and evening fixtures. Within driving distance is Silloth and just over the border is Gretna Green, where you'll find the Gretna Gateway Shopping Centre and Anvil Hall, the famous wedding venue.

The cottage is well suited for exploring Carlisle, the Lake District, Scotland and even venturing out onto the Carlisle to Settle railway. We had our bikes with us and Adrian kindly let us put them in his garage and it was no trouble to him or his family to get them out for us or put them away whenever we wanted, which was very kind. The cottage itself is very clean, the decoration is lovely, it's very comfortable and has everything you would need. We would thoroughly recommend this.
