What our customers say about their holidays

    • Patrick - Verified booking

Despite COVID having impacted us all, the chance for exploring Cumbria, the Lakes etc was made all the more enjoyable by this fabulous little cottage.

Quite quirky but really well appointed, bedrooms were lovely, bathroom light and airy with plenty of hot water to satisfy our teenagers! But above all great to have a dog with us as well. Perfect location for him and a great exercising area that was secure to prevent any unexpected running off, by the Doodle that is. The local village of Armathwaite has two great pubs and we ate lunch in both! However, there can be only one winner, Fox and Pheasant did a cracking meal of chicken breast stuffed with haggis and whiskey creamy sauce, divine! All washed down with local Ale. Speaking of Ale, cannot recommend more highly than picking up a load of beer from a fabulous brewery called Ennerdale, do a delicious IPA that is seriously refreshing check out the link: http://www.ennerdalebrewery.co.uk/ Whilst your staying at the cottage, there are fresh eggs in the honesty box at the end of the lane, super tasty and fresh for a scrummy breakfast, just make sure you have some cash! Being next to a farm, you do need to time departure and return for when the dairy cows are led out to the fields, so you really do feel deep in farming country, but we loved it, so did Wilbur our Doodle, so many chickens, ducks and geese, just make sure you have your furry friends on a lead whe going out to avoid scaring the locals!! And lastly to Nick, who greeted us on arrival. Lovely chap and host who we exchanged a few laughs with, looking forward to booking our return Nick!

Just back from a lovely peaceful week at Swallows Nest with our 2 dogs.

I can't think of anywhere better to be at this time, surrounded by nature, animals, fields and beautiful little villages. An easy drive to the Lake District, and a nice walk into the local village which has a good shop, 2 pubs and a lovely river walk. For us having 2 dogs the totally enclosed garden was a huge benefit as we could open the patio doors and not have to worry about them escaping! (one is a husky.....say no more). Just up a path on the farm grounds, through the lovely serene pet cemetery we had access to several large fenced in paddocks for the dogs to play in the morning and evening. We were out all day exploring so it was good to have somewhere close for them before we went and when we got back. The cottage itself is a charm, lovely open space downstairs with everything we needed and 2 good bedrooms and large bathroom upstairs. I would recommend this cottage to anybody wanting to get away from it all.

The property was private and cozy even though it's on the site of a working family farm.

That was actually one of our favorite parts, it felt like we were part of the countryside/community for a couple days. And we loved saying hello to the dogs and alpacas/llamas. We visited on a chilly weekend, so definitely use the space heaters provided if you get cold easily. We only used the wood stove (on purpose) and though that heats the living area so well and was extremely cozy, it was a little chilly in the bedroom without the heater on. Again, we did that on purpose, but not all like that. Our hosts were lovely the couple times we saw them and they were super responsive to texts - for example when we needed more kindling or teabags. The surrounding countryside was gorgeous and the inn/restaurant just down the road (The Crossings Inn) was great and so close by. It's also in Hadrian's Wall country. We loved it.

We have just come back from a long weekend break at the swallows nest.

The first thing that stuck us as we walk into the cottage was the damp smell. It wasn’t the cows that live next door but a damp, mould type smell. We dreaded it every time we walked back into the cottage. There at 2 small leather sofas to watch the tv on at the end of a tiring day. They are very uncomfortable. I’ve seen other people write this and laugh but it’s so true. The pillows are awful…take your own!! Here’s the best part…the hot tub…don’t waste your money. You have to light the fires hours before to keep the water hot, then keep stirring the tub with a huge paddle to keep the warmth moving about, then place 2 heavy covers over it until it’s time to stir it again. It’s not a hot tub…it’s a couldron!!! Other than that..there’s 2 great pubs and some lovely walks nearby!!!
