What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sarah - Verified booking

This was the second time I have stayed at the cottage and both stays were excellent.

The cottage is small but beautiful and well equipped, comfortable and peaceful. I am disabled with arthritis and rather limited mobility. My husband drove me up to Grasmere but I stayed on my own, and I made my own way home on public transport using railway assistance. Everything worked well. The one thing which might be a bit daunting for someone with mobility problems is the steep staircase, but I found it quite manageable if I took my time. I was on holiday. The slow and thoughtful ascent and descent was all part of the zen like quality of the stay! The setting suited me perfectly. I don’t drive but excellent buses stop very near the cottage, linking Keswick and Kendal. Other bus links and tours are easily available. Grasmere itself is lovely, of course. I found everything I needed locally in easy walking distance and was never short of a place to sit and have a cuppa. My son came to visit one day and was impressed by all the vegan offerings available in the village. I even managed to walk up to Allen Bank one day, which was a beautiful experience. Sitting where Wordsworth once sat and seeing my first red squirrel was something I’ll never forget. I thoroughly recommend Beck Steps for a couple or anyone wanting a solo holiday. It is a cottage with charm and comfort which does wonders for the soul!

I had a truly happy stay at Beck Steps 1.

Everything was comfortable and well thought out. The shower was glorious, the bed very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked, with everything beautifully clean. I utterly loved my time there. I was on my own for most of the week. My husband drove me up but had to leave at the weekend. I am disabled with a deformed spine which leaves me almost bent double with mobility problems. I walk with a wheeled walker. The one thing that had concerned me was the stairs, and when I saw them I thought ‘uh oh, here we go!’ They are steep with a curve. But I found them solid , with steps of a good width and after the first day I became cheerfully adept at mountaineering. On thing I would suggest is that a small hand grab rail at the top of the stairs would be reassuring and would help all sorts of people, the older ones, pregnant ones or even the ones who have had one happy pint too many!, without looking like a disability aid. As an older disabled woman without a car the location was perfect, with local Co op and easy access to the whole of Grasmere and buses on the doorstep. To sum up, the whole experience was lovely, lovely, lovely!

Beck Steps 1 I can only write positive information on this cottage.

There were no negatives at all with any aspect of the cottage. The special items that need pointing out. Fantastic communication with the owner. The bed is a sealy posturepedic and was so comfy for the two of us. I’m 16 stone, wife is 8, and we didn’t roll together or have 1 bad sleep. I do have one negative, (but it’s actually a +) the TV signal is very poor. But the smart TV we logged into Netflix and watched mindless zombie movies and loved it. Being away from the normal TV life was perfect. No news. Perfect. Car parking at the rear was great. Got the Velar in, no problem. That’s 5m long by nearly 2m wide. Cottage central heating and hot water was perfect. Always warm. Stove was lovely for a couple of nights when we were back early and put it on. But otherwise in - degree C conditions warm as toast. Everything you need was there. It was spotless of dust. So clean. Perfect location, right in Grasmere and can walk to breakfast across the road. Co-Op 20m away. Thank you for such an awesome cottage. Two adults, no pets. Best valentines week away for 30 years

Gorgeous little cottage in a fabulous location.

Super comfy bed and lovely bathroom. Kitchen well equipped. However the soft furnishings are tired and shabby and long overdue an upgrade. The sofa and arm chair are so old and desperately in need of either reupholstering or preferably replacing. We really wanted somewhere to just relax in front of the fire on an evening after long Lakeland walks but it was impossible to get comfy. When we arrived at 4pm it was already dark and the underfloor heating wasn’t on so the house was cold and felt unwelcoming. There were no instructions as to how to put the underfloor heating on. With a slate floor this is imperative in these temperatures, it took hours to warm the cottage up. Otherwise it needs carpets. There were quite a few cobwebs in the cottage which although clean gave the impression of neglect and added to the lack of the welcoming feeling I had expected. in all we had a good break in grasmere but ended up cutting it short and coming home early as we missed our home comforts.

Overall we liked our stay in Woodloft Cottage and may stay there again in the future.

That said, when we arrived we were unpleasantly surprised by the amount of cobwebs along the ceiling throughout the house and especially in the bathroom. We also found a lot of kitchen utensils in the drawers that were not properly cleaned. Additionally, the ceiling is rather low for two very average Dutch people (approx. 1.81m tall), but this never really posed a serious problem after we got used to it. I did bump my head a few times on the low beams though. The cottage is very cosy and well-furnished. The kitchen and living room are well-equipped and the bed was fine. We did occasionally hear some noise from upstairs as others have pointed out, but this was comparable to the noise we sometimes hear from our upstairs neighbour in our own flat. Perhaps previous guests had the misfortune of having very noisy upstairs neighbours or the privilege of not living in a flat. All in all, we liked our stay in Woodloft Cottage and would recommend it to others.
