The Garden Room is a charming one-bedroom ground floor annexe to a Georgian dower house, Set in the hamlet of Wash at the foot of South Head (part of the Kinder Scout range in the Peak District National Park), just outside the market town of Chapel-en-le-Frith. Brookcliff House dates from the early 17th century when what is now the sitting room was built as a Quaker chapel, In the Georgian period, the main body of the house was added on to create a dower house for the widow of a local squire, The Garden Room was added in 2008. Wash village is so-called as it was where the farmers used to bring their sheep to wash them in the river, It is a charming little hamlet and a walkers’ paradise with numerous footpaths criss-crossing the stunning Derbyshire landscape, The Pennine Bridleway passes within a mile and there are routes up Eccles Pike, Cracken Edge, South Head and over to Edale, The village may feel remote but it is just off the A6 main road which runs from the spa town of Buxton and beyond to Stockport and Manchester, The market town of Chapel-en-le-Frith, with its shops, supermarkets and petrol station, is just a mile away, There are two local train stations with Chinley serving Stockport, Manchester, Edale, Hathersage and Sheffield and Chapel-en-le-Frith has trains to Buxton, Stockport and Manchester. Walks start from the front door, After breakfast, enjoy a morning hike up Eccles Pike or South Head, There are longer full day hikes too with Kinder Scout and Edale within range for regular walkers, In the afternoon why not take a drive and admire the magnificent landscape of the Winnats Pass, before heading to Castleton with its many pubs, cafes and shops selling the beautiful locally mined Blue John jewellery? There are also several caverns here to explore including Blue John Cavern and Speedwell Cavern with its exciting boat trip, The stately homes of Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Lyme Hall are also within easy driving distance. Immaculately and tastefully decorated, beautifully clean, and felt like a real home from home. The owners also kindly left a welcome pack of provisions that more than saw us through breakfast for the next three days. Cannot recommend highly enough.
