About the area: Aldeburgh is a very special seaside town, held in a time warp by generations of families delighting in its Edwardian elegance, its timeless feel and its relaxed atmosphere. Writers, artists, composers, musicians, actors and those who hanker for the simple pleasures of holidays in their youth return to Aldeburgh year after year. In the past half decade Aldeburgh has become home to a number of smart boutiques and excellent local shops selling fresh local produce and organic food. Several super restaurants have been established and the visitor can now enjoy anything from Aldeburgh?'s world famous fish and chips to a top quality gourmet meal.
The boating lake remains an irresistible draw for even the most sophisticated 21st century youngster and you can still stroll down to Slaughden for sailing or a boat trip on the Alde. There are tennis courts open to the public, a wonderful golf course, quiet coastal and heathland walks and cycle rides. Aldeburgh Cinema has a great selection of films throughout the year as well as hosting live streaming plays, opera and ballet.
Despite Aldeburgh being one of the east coast's most famous holiday destinations, the town is only really crowded during the Carnival in mid August. Even then just a short stroll along the beach or across the water meadows towards Slaughden or Thorpeness will give you the opportunity to leave the people behind and commune with the natural beauty of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, awash with a plethora of birdlife and unspoilt coastal landscape.
Eating and Drinking Out: There are plenty of pubs, restaurants and tearooms to choose from, all within a stones throw of Top Flat. The White Lion Hotel has sea views and a traditional menu and Prezzo provides a relaxed, friendly atmosphere for all ages.
For slightly more formal dining try Regatta or The Lighthouse but no trip to Suffolk could be complete without trying the world-class Aldeburgh fish and chips. There are two great fish and chip shops in Aldeburgh High Street... you may have to queue but it will be well worth the wait.
Self Catering Eating: In the High Street you will find all the holiday provisions and treats you need; butchers, bakers, greengrocers, Lawsons Delicatessen, and Co-op general store. However, the pièce de rèsistance is the wonderful selection of freshly caught fish available from the fishermen's sheds which are dotted along the beach. You will be able to see the boats coming in from the sitting room or the balcony so no problem being first in the queue for fresh fish in the morning - perfect!
The pretty little town of Orford, situated on the rivers Alde and Ore is a 20-minute pleasant drive through rural Suffolk and well worth a visit. Pinney's of Orford have grown oysters at Butley Creek since the 1950s and continues to supply freshly smoked fish every day and the award winning Pump Street Bakery has the most amazing breads and pastries. Snape Maltings is only a few miles away with The Food Hall and Farmers Market.
Alternatively, most of the major super markets will deliver to this address. For more ideas on places to visit and things to do, please see our information websites Visit Aldeburgh, Visit Orford and Visit Southwold.
