The Gate House receives high praise for its charm, well-equipped nature, and beautiful decoration. Guests appreciate the welcoming hosts and the property's suitability for dogs, with great walks right on the doorstep. The enclosed garden and historical character add to the appeal, although the lack of amenities within walking distance is noted. Overall, it's seen as an ideal rural escape with comfortable furnishings and a cosy atmosphere.
Reviewers consistently mention that The Gate House is very clean and well-presented, indicating a high standard of cleanliness throughout the property.
The location is praised for its beautiful walks and proximity to local attractions, though some guests note the absence of shops and pubs within walking distance. The peaceful and rural setting is highly valued.
Guests find the cottage comfortable, with special mentions of comfy beds and a cosy environment. However, a few guests note that some seating could be more comfortable, slightly impacting the score.
The property is well-equipped with modern appliances and facilities, including a well-furnished kitchen and secure garden. Some minor suggestions for improvements are made, but overall, the facilities are highly regarded.
While guests express gratitude for the welcoming touches such as a welcome pack and fresh flowers, there is not enough information to determine if such gifts are a consistent offering, and they should not be expected on every visit.
This Grade II listed former crossing keeper's home is in a fantastic location in the village of Oakamoor which is surrounded by walking and cycling tracks. You will be impressed by the unusual exterior reputedly designed by Pugin (architect of the Houses of Parliament) as soon as you arrive and the cottage is full of quirky nods to the building's heritage and the North Staffordshire railway which ran past. With original stonework, quarry tiled floors and beautiful features, the cottage has been stunningly restored to reflect its former life. There is a well-equipped kitchen with a Belfast sink, a fabulous range cooker and a very useful utility which houses the laundry facilities and provides a great place to leave your muddy boots at the end of the day. The delightful dining room has a feature fireplace which is currently not in use and the sitting room has large windows and a cast iron electric stove to keep you warm and create a cosy atmosphere. The family bathroom is also on the ground floor and boasts a freestanding roll top bath where you can soak away any stresses and strains at the end of the day. Upstairs are the two bedrooms which have views out to the village and are lovely rooms to wake up in. The lawned garden has a patio area with furniture and there is the unusual addition of the fenced off entrance to the Oakamoor railway tunnel at the far end. This cottage is the perfect base for friends, families or walkers as routes lead from the doorstep out into the surrounding countryside. With Alton Towers, so many places of historic interest, the beautiful countryside and lovely towns and villages of the Peak District National Park all nearby, this cottage is fantastically located, will appeal to most, and is a fantastic choice for a break away at any time of the year.
The picturesque village of Oakamoor is in a fantastic position in the Churnet Valley and is ideal for walkers, ramblers and cyclists with many routes running nearby. There is a disused railway which provides a link to Denstone which is fantastic for cyclists and there is a Woods and Ways route around the village. There are lovely locations for picnics in the village and the River Churnet runs through the centre.

The location is superb, especially if you have dogs, most days we walked the track to the ramblers retreat with ours and their is also a park over the road. The owner was very welcoming and had a lot of local knowledge and recommendations of places to go. We hope to return.
