You'll find plenty of things to see and do in the stunning village of Staithes; head to Cod & Lobster, a seaside pub to have a taste of some local seafood,

partake of afternoon tea and delicious cakes at Dotty's Vintage Tearoom, marvel at the art displayed in Staithes Gallery, and for a taste of history head over to Staithes Museum. Drive down to the gorgeous seaside town of Whitby and visit the ruins Whitby Abbey, once a source of inspiration to many known poets and writers, then see if you can manage the climb up the 199 Steps - those brave enough to do so will be rewarded with amazing, sweeping views of the town and harbour. Don your bathing suits and lounge in the sun at Whitby Beach, or make your way to Whitby Whale Watching for a boat trip along the sea where you might spot some sea creatures. Lovers of nature can set off to the North York Moors National Park, where you'll be spoilt for choice for walks, hikes and scenic points. Start off at Mulgrave Woods, where you'll be able to walk past the ruins of Mulgrave Castle, then Mallyan Spout Waterfall and then head to the National Trust's Bridestones, Crosscliff & Blakey Topping, for vast and undisturbed views of the park. Hinderwell House is the perfect base for a new adventure with your loved one.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an rnli lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.

Conveniently situated for the shops, harbour, pub and Cleveland Way. Everyone we met was friendly, will definitely go back. Host helpfully provided parking permit for council car park with instructions - these could be more explicit about where NOT to park as I parked in the residents section and got a fine. My fault, I should have read the instructions more carefully, but one to look out for. Didn’t spoil the holiday!

  • David

Parking needs to be explained fully, we had to pay an extra 70 pounds for a weeks parking, very disappointing!

  • Stephen

Nearest other car park is on top of a steep hill which you have to pay for. This should be made clear.
