Staithes 1.8 miles. The Old Police House is a charming, detached property resting in the hamlet of Hinderwell, near Staithes, and was formerly the police station for the local area. Dating back to the 1880s, this characterful abode offers a pet-friendly accommodation with near-by shop and pub, ideal for a family or group of friends looking to explore North Yorkshire’s coast and countryside. Park off-road and be welcomed into this lovely property, discovering light and airy living spaces, beginning with a stylishly fitted living/dining space, ideal for reclining beside the electric fire at the end of the day, or indulging in a hearty meal. There is also the option of a pleasant snug located in the conservatory, so why not catch up on a good book in a moment of quiet? The kitchen boasts contemporary furniture and an opulent feel, catering to your culinary needs with a great variety of amenities, and there is a handy utility to take care of your washing. When sleep calls, three bedrooms await your rest, each with storage and homely décor, so choose between a ground-floor king-size with Smart TV serviced by a ground-floor shower room,a second king-size, and a twin, plus large bathroom on the first floor. Outside, dine alfresco on the patio before heading out to explore the local area. Hinderwell is a small settlement offering a butchers’ shop and two pubs, The Brown Cow and The Badger Hounds. Just a mile away above the beautiful village of Staithes is a Co-op store and down in the village are a few independent stores, more eateries, and a charming harbour. From the property it is barely a mile to Runswick Bay with its sweeping, sandy beach and there are beaches at Skinningrove, Saltburn and Whitby. Robin Hood’s Bay is another place not to miss. Whitby is well worth a visit, offering the intriguing abbey ruins, a local beach, museum, Dracula Experience and more. Guests are also within reach of the incredible scenery of the North York Moors National Park, ideal for hiking with your four-legged family member, birdwatching, and mountain biking. All of this and so much more with a stay at The Old Police House.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an rnli lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.

This was definitely a 10 out of 10 home from home. Within 2 minutes walk to the bus stops, and just a 5 minute walk to the two local pubs, The brown cow and The Badger hounds both very welcoming and serving excellent food. Would highly recommend The Old Police House and we will definitely be returning.

It is very spacious and ideally located to explore the surrounding coast line. Our only concern was the car parking arrangements which involve negotiating a narrow lane to the car parking space. It is fine for small vehicles but proved to be problematic for our largish car. Aside from this it's a lovely place to stay

Ideally located for local walks with the dog and for venturing out to beaches and the countryside, and other places of interest. Would highly recommend.
