The Hayloft is a well-received cottage in the tranquil village of Lastingham, praised for its cleanliness, cosy atmosphere, and friendly owner. Guests enjoy the local pub, stunning walks, and the peaceful garden. Some mention the lack of mobile signal and internet, and a few suggest updates to the shower and kitchen facilities.
Guests consistently describe the cottage as very clean and well-presented, indicating high standards of cleanliness throughout their stays.
The location is highly regarded for its tranquility, proximity to nature, and a welcoming local pub. The village's peacefulness and access to the moors and coast are frequently appreciated.
The cottage is often referred to as cosy and comfortable, particularly for couples. However, a few guests mentioned the bed's firmness and the bath's shape as areas for improvement.
Facilities are generally well-received, with secure parking and a private garden being highlights. Some guests suggest upgrading the shower and kitchen appliances, and there are mixed feelings about the combination oven/microwave.
While guests find the hosts welcoming and helpful, there is insufficient information regarding specific thoughtful gestures such as gifts, and therefore a score cannot be provided.
A charming 18th century, stone-built detached barn conversion, originally a hayloft, situated in the pretty village of Lastingham. Stone steps lead up to the entrance of the cottage, which is all on one level. This lovingly restored hayloft is stylishly furnished and decorated with a contemporary open-plan living area, yet remains cosy and inviting. The owners live in the adjoining property and personally welcome guests. With excellent walking from the doorstep, numerous villages and market towns to explore within the beautiful North York Moors National Park, and easy access to the East Coast, this makes an ideal base for an enjoyable, relaxing holiday.
Situated on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, the small village of Lastingham has a unique and fascinating history. A monastery was founded in 654 by St Cedd and flourished until the Danes destroyed it in the 9th century. In 1078, Stephen, the Abbot of Whitby, persuaded William I to restore Lastingham. However, Stephen and his monks left abruptly to set up a new monastery in York, leaving only the crypt and the apse of the church complete. Amazingly, the crypt has survived unaltered over the centuries. Local attractions include the North Yorkshire Moors, Pickering Castle, the Wheeldale Roman Road and the Rievaulx Terrace and Temples. For lovers of the Great Outdoors, there are plenty of beautiful and scenic walks leading directly from the village.

The area is beautiful and the local pub is a hidden gem. We love Yorkshire and are looking to retire there and visit different areas to find our perfect location. Lastingham ticked all the boxes and we are looking forward to visiting again next year. Unfortunately we wonât be staying at The Hayloft as although it was beautiful and has everything you need, I ended up stupidly leaving things behind. I text the owner a couple of times but have had no reply. Really disappointing. I would never leave a bad review and this is a good review, just make sure you donât leave anything behind

Alan (the proprietor) is a really friendly man and he made us feel very welcome. He showed us around the accomodation and how to work the heating and hot water system. There is a large area of off-street parking and an outside area for sitting out on a nice day/evening. The accomodation has a two-seater sofa and an armchair, a small but well stocked galley kitchen (which we made use of most evenings) and a dining area all in the main reception room. There is a TV with a wide array of channels including Netflix, Prime and Youtube, as well as wireless internet - which you would need as the village has no/very little mobile network coverage. Thre is also a wood-burner and a large stock of logs, for those chilly evenings (which we didn't use on this visit). The double bedroom is a good size and very comfortable, and the on-suite bathroom is a large size. If you want a getaway location where no-one can get in touch with you, this is the place. The stream that runs along side the property is probably the loudest sound in the village - unless you count the sheep which roam everywhere. If you go out in the evening to the pub in the village, you will need a torch as there are no streetlights and it gets very dark. We have already decided that we plan to stay in the Hayloft again, as there were quite a number of English Heritage sights in the area, that we didn't get a chance to visit this time

Alan greeted us and showed us the facilities and kindly left us a bottle of wine. Lastingham is a gem, the Church is a must to visit as well as the Blacksmiths Arms a 2 minute walk away from where we were staying. The food was excellent especially the Steak & Ale pie. Already thinking about another visit next year. Thank you for a great holiday hope to see you again. June & Andy
