What our customers say about their holidays

The location of this cottage to start off is amazing, there is no shortage of walks, the nearby town was lovely.

We really wanted to love it here, but we really wouldn’t return in all honesty. To start with, upon booking the only request in regards to a dog is ‘well behaved’, I personally think this is really subjective, our dog is perfectly well behaved to our standards, but for this cottage upon arrival we realised it was quite extreme. Our dog usually sleeps with us in our room, is allowed on our couch as we treat her entirely as part of our family, I wouldn’t say that’s badly behaved at all, but the request for absolutely no dogs upstairs or on any furniture was found upon our arrival in the file you’re given detailing facilities in the house, our dog was expected to stay in the kitchen overnight which we found impossible given we’ve never made her do that before, we’ve been on several dog friendly holidays in the UK and we’ve never came across such ridiculous unrealistic rules, you may as well not have it be dog friendly, the only good aspect for our dog was a large private back garden. I’d recommend instead of something as subjective as ‘well behaved dogs’ advertised, perhaps list all your rules as many people will not be able to facilitate your requirements. The gift basket provided, while appreciated, was not at all good, our milk was completely off and had curdled before we’d even arrived, the bacon had its expiry date what looked like torn off, so we didn’t risk eating that. The jam, had green mold all over the top of it, so if that’s the standard, I really wouldn’t bother doing it in the future for guests, unless maybe we were unlucky and got that as a one off. No one had informed us, but our water and heating was all completely switches off, to my surprise when I went to shower in freezing cold water. My partner had to turn all of this back on by the mains switches, and it took a full day for it to take effect, not exactly what you want after a six hour commute. There were stains on carpets upstairs in various places in one of the bedrooms. Positive points however are the kitchen was the best equipped kitchen I’d encountered, the log burner was lovely on a night time, you have full access to all sky channels which is handy when winding down on the night time. this was a last minute booking, but for the money we paid we expected a little bit better, so we won’t return unfortunately.

Prior to our trip to Scotland, Roxane the host, phoned in advance to ask what we would like in our welcome pack and what activities we were interested in so she could e-mail details in advance.

Having stayed in numerous holiday cottages over the years, this is the first time we’ve had a welcome call and thought it was a lovely gesture. Directions to the cottage aren’t clear on the Sykes website but we phoned Roxane and she guided us in. Verdi cottage is bijou, but very well appointed with quality furnishings. Freshly cut flowers, bathrobes and fluffy white towels, give it a luxurious feel. I am not a dog lover and when a cottage is advertised as ‘dog friendly’ I am normally wary, but I needn’t have been. Verdi is spotlessly clean with not even the slightest whiff of dog. The welcome pack was without doubt the best we have had in a holiday cottage. Full of fresh quality local produce and bottle of good quality wine . The bathrooms are lovely and are serviced by a huge boiler which meant we always had an abundance of high pressure hot water. The main bedroom is advertised as having a super-king bed, but it is in fact king-sized. While we were staying we asked for extra towels and a couple of items that were missing in the kitchen. They were provided without question. The cottage has access to a lovely side garden with a table, chairs and BBQ. There is also a separate laundry house with washer, dryer, detergent and an abundance of spares (cleaning fluid, bin liners, toilet rolls etc.) We also had access to a log store and Athol, the owner, offered us use of his golf clubs. All at no extra cost ! Roxane, Athol and their family live in the house across the courtyard and were on hand to recommend local activities and places to eat. We spent most of the week in and around Loch Tay at Kenmore, which is stunning and great for water sports and open water swimming. A tip for those visiting the area is not to assume that you can just walk in to a pub or restaurant and get a drink/ meal. Many places are suffering from post-Covid staff shortages and are closed for part of the week. The Inn on the Tay and the Grandtully Hotel are both very good, but booking several days ahead is essential if you want to eat anywhere half decent. The hosting most definitely made our stay at Verdi cottage, nothing was too much trouble and we felt like part of the family for the week we stayed. We were genuinely sad to leave and will definitely return.

Let me start by saying what an amazing place Heilan Roo is.

When you first arrive, the property looks as amazing as the pictures portray, especially if you arrive at dusk as we did. The house is very spacious and has two adjoining open plan living spaces. One we used during the day with a large leather corner sofa overlooking the front of the property and the other an entertainment area sharing it’s space with the kitchen and dining table. All the rooms are furnished to a high standard with quality furniture, paintings and hand made decorations in each room. The kitchen is well stocked and has everything you could ever need. Nothing is missing and you won’t need to bring anything with you. The gravelled garden was beautiful with its waterfalls that lit up on an evening and made for a fantastic place to relax in the log fired hot tub at the end of the day. We didn’t use them, but there was also a BBQ and fire pit which would make for a great place to spend your time in the summer evenings I’m sure. Elaine had put together a welcome basket with a number of goodies to welcome us. Both before and during our stay she was very attentive, offering tips on the hot tub, EV charging and places to eat and visit during our stay. Pitlochry itself has plenty of places to eat and visit and we followed some of Elaine’s recommendations by eating at McKay’s and The Old Mill. We also visited the Dam and Salmon Ladder which were free to access. A short walk from the house is the Killiecrankie Visitor Centre and Jacobite Cafe where you can grab a cake and coffee before walking the River Garry all the way to Pitlochry and/or visit the Soldiers Leap. Heilan Roo is a stunning property and located in a fantastic location. You really couldn’t find anywhere better to stay and we couldn’t believe our luck in being able to book it. We will definitely look forward to coming back again in the near future.

Verde Cottage is a beautiful home from home.

Fixtures and fittings were good quality and the welcome package was very much appreciated after a long journey. Host was very informative, friendly and we loved the dogs too. *Bed was comfy and lots of storage in the room. *Lounge seating was also very comfy and the TV package was better than anywhere else we'd stayed. Watching a movie or the latest sports, in the evening was a great way to unwind after a busy day. *Bathroom downstairs had a big bath which my husband loves. The only issue was the ceiling being a little mouldy (probably needs better ventilation over the shower) and the sink taps were very stiff. *Kitchen was well equipped and the mobile island made up for the lack of worktop space for dishing up etc.. *Outside space was better at the front. The rear entrance door lock was very stiff so we didn't use the outside space to the rear, which could be a lovely private space for outside dining or reading etc.. *Location was spot on and right near the river where you can paddle or watch people canoeing. A very short walk to the nearest shop and pub/restaurant. All we could hear was birds chirping and the river rushing. It's also a great place for star gazing. It's so dark at night we could see so many stars. I could've stayed out all night if I had a telescope. Exactly what we needed and couldn't have predicted the sunny hot weather which also helped. A Perfect Slice of Heaven Our stay at Heilan Roo in Killiecrankie was nothing short of exceptional.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this holiday home is a cut above the rest. The house was immaculate, reflecting an impressive attention to detail that made us feel comfortable and welcomed instantly. Every room was spotless, beautifully decorated, and equipped with all the amenities we could possibly need. The location of Heilan Roo is absolutely stunning. Nestled in the heart of Killiecrankie, the surrounding landscape is nothing short of breathtaking. We found ourselves immersed in the natural beauty of the area, with scenic views and peaceful surroundings that provided the perfect backdrop for a relaxing getaway. Whether you’re looking to explore the local trails or simply enjoy the serenity, this location is ideal. Elaine and Roo, our hosts, could not have been more accommodating and helpful. Their hospitality truly made our stay special. They went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed, offering valuable tips and recommendations that enhanced our experience. Their warm and friendly approach made us feel right at home. We wholeheartedly recommend Heilan Roo to anyone looking to escape to a little piece of heaven. It is the perfect retreat for those seeking a combination of pristine accommodation, stunning location, and outstanding hospitality. Our time here was unforgettable, and we can’t wait to return.
