About this property

Aberdaron 2 miles. Bryn Canaid is a superb Grade-II listed traditional Welsh Crog Loft Cottage resting in Uwchmynydd near Aberdaron, Gwynedd. Enjoying a fantastic location on National Trust land and boasting exceptional views of the surrounding hills and mountains, Bardsey Island, and on a clear day, the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland! Set amongst National Trust farmland in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Above are some of the darkest skies in the world, recognised by the International Dark Sky Association; and Bardsey Island has been declared a Dark Sky Sanctuary.

You might simply choose to enjoy sundowners in the garden or curl up with a book by the fire. This is also a place for contemplation. There once was a monastery on Bardsey Island which is site of ancient and modern pilgrimage. Celebrated in the work of the twentieth century poet RS Thomas, who also ministered at St Hwywn’s Church in Aberdaron.

The green lane adjacent to the cottage runs down to the cliffs and coves beyond. Strewn with wildflowers in springtime and blackberries in autumn. In early winter the pupping seals call to one another and throughout the year migratory birds come and go. The colony of rare choughs which nest at Pen-y-Cil are often to be seen and heard around the garden.

For most, the summer months you are best taking a dip in the sea at Porth Meudwy! This is also where the boat leaves for Bardsey Island, when the weather allows. And slightly further away, there are some of the Llyn’s finest beaches, including Whistling Sands. The property benefits from two off-road parking spaces, an external utility with bike storage, and a large lawned garden, where you can enjoy the panoramic views as you enjoy your morning coffee. Be welcomed into the well-equipped kitchen/diner, where you can rustle up tasty dishes, ready to enjoy at the dining table as you plan the following days itinerary. After dinner, move through to the sitting room, where you can enjoy watching your favourite film in front of the crackling woodburning stove. Continue through to find a contemporary shower room where you can freshen up after a day of exploring, before retiring to one of two beautifully presented bedrooms, a single with exceptional views of the island, and a king-size with stunning views of the surrounding hills and mountains and a partial view of the island. If you want to see the very best of the area, the coastal path can be found just paces away from Bryn Canaid, offering a scenic tour along the coast ensuring you don’t miss a thing! If you fancy a tasty home-cooked breakfast beforehand without the fuss of cooking, why not visit the local Caffi Ty Nedwydd? For a wider selection of amenities, head to nearby Aberdaron, where you can stock up on essentials at the convenience stores, enjoy a meal at Gwesty Ty Newydd, or while away an afternoon on the beach with fresh fish and chips in hand. Next stop is Abersoch, where you can test out your swing at the excellent Abersoch Golf Club, tuck-in to fresh seafood at The Potted Lobster, or try your hand out at a variety of watersports, including surfing and paddleboarding. Further afield, you can continue the beachside fun at the popular destinations of Pwllheli and Criccieth, the latter of which is home to a wonderful castle with sweeping sea views. For an unforgettable stay in North Wales, look no further than Bryn Canaid.

The seaside village of Aberdaron is peacefully situated around two streams, and facing the sea. Straggling up the hills are the buildings that give Aberdaron its character; the lime-washed fishermen's cottages, the cafes, shops, and hotels, and the church of St Hywyn. On each side of the river's mouth is the beach for walking and playing on, and a promenade where you can watch the sailing boats and regattas in the bay. There is also a National Trust visitor centre and car park. The popular resorts of Pwllheli and Abersoch are within easy reach. Discover fabulous castles and coves, or enjoy excellent fishing, watersports and golf opportunities, all available nearby. The dramatic scenery and abundance of superb walks at the Snowdonia National Park area are within easy driving distance, making an ideal base for a varied and enjoyable holiday, at any time of year.

The cottage is quirky which adds to its charm. The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. We loved it! Helen is a kind, attentive host and the extra items provided, especially the Bara brith, were most welcome. Thank you Helen!
