I stay in the area every 2 months and Iâm from this area with family going back generations!
I dislike giving negative reviews and only had 2 other stays out of over 30 + cottages here with average reviews otherwise I often return to most cottages. I feel I have to list things to make it clear to ensure they are addressed for future visitors without sounding petty. Very disappointing with lack of basic utensils such as no veg peeler, no whisk, no spatula, a side had broken off handle, broken bottle opener, 2 frying pans both burnt, some crockery a bit worn and especially dinner plates. Lack of oven proof dishes(only 1 large lasagna dish) nothing else! Other broken items - mirror taped up in bedroom, frustrating with kitchen bin lid broken. We have never stay anywhere where there is such a lack of âbasicâ facilities and donât expect too much in a starter pack for fire but this was very poor! One âhand towelâ for two persons for 7 days! Freezer iced up and really needed a proper clean and defrosting. Fridge very small inside and broken light so difficult to see dial as temperature very temperamental and no battery in torch when I tried to use it to cede fridge dial. Think the fridge is so old needs replacing. Damp smell everywhere evidence on skirtings some ceilings and base cupboards in kitchen showing black mould from damp inc plaster coming off walls by front hall etc. Not great for asthma sufferers like myself. This is not condensation this requires damp proofing as many old cottages do and have been damp proofed over the years. Cleanliness needs a bit of attention with dust in places and more so in bedside cabinets and lamps just felt a bit grubby in places. Finishing on a more positive note the shower pressure is great and good some rooms with cosy living room, furnished quite nicely in bedrooms, bed a bit small for a double. Parking we managed outside the house quite well. I regularly stay in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Llan Ffestiniog, Tanygrisiau and other areas close by, on the whole, Hen ty Capel is too disappointing to return too. Needs a little attention and added extras to make it worthy of a good review.

We loved Bryn Re!
We stayed for two weeks (with very unsettled weather). The location is fabulous - very remote and very peaceful, with glorious views to the south of Cadair Idris and the Rhinog mountains to the west. We were entertained each evening by a curlew flying around the house and even landing on a nearby fence post. Also the sound of sheep is about as noisy as it gets. Located at the end of a long (1/2 mile?) private drive the cottage is very remote and has lots of rustic charm. It is well furnished, with comfortable reclining chairs and sofa from which to enjoy the log burner (plenty of logs included by the owners). The kitchen and utility room has everything youâd need. We met both the owners who were very friendly and welcoming - nothing is too much trouble it seems. On arrival we found a welcome pack of essential supplies (enough tea, coffee and milk for the first evening) including delicious Welsh cakes and Bara Brith. If you enjoy a quiet stroll to the pub in the evening this is not the cottage to choose! But for relaxing, and peace and quiet, itâs wonderful. There is good hill walking nearby - Cadair Idris is only half and hour away. Good beaches too at Porthmadog and Harlech (only half an hour) and highly recommend a visit to Corris Slate Mine (also only about half an hour away). Thank you to the owners, Gwyn and Buddog, for making your lovely cottage available.

The cottage had everything we needed.
The heating was modern and got the cottage cosy at the end of a cold day out. The place was well kept and in good order. The piano/organ was delightful! The rooms were big enough for 2 and there was enough storage for the week. The check in system was simple. It was well located, in walking distance from 2 supermarkets and a pub. It was just right for our needs (2 adults and 2 primary aged children). The main downside was the cleanliness of the linen. We emailed the owner and the same day fresh linen was provided (flat sheets, towel and tea towels). Unfortunately on the last day we discovered the main bed flat sheet had been dirty from the start too (we stripped the bed and found dirt on it in a place we hadn't slept). The electric shower in the ensuite had a quirk where it dropped power and went cold before coming back burning hot. It scalded our 10 year old on the second night so we had to take extra care for the rest of the holiday. Parking was tricky with a 4x4 sized car but this was clear when we booked so that's the chance we took.

A good centre for exploring the Snowdonia National Park, both the mountains and the coastline.
We did meet the owners more by luck than anything else and they are very friendly and helpful. They do not live close by though, and are living about 5 miles away. The Cottage is therefore very remote, which in our case was fine. We loved the surrounding scenery. I would suggest that perhaps there could be a bit more information left in the cottage other than just the glossy pamphlets. Something on where best to walk, and on where to go to eat locally would be helpful. Broadband and phone signals worked OK though download speeds are not great as you might expect so far away from any fibre connectivity. No problem with web sites for places of interest or with email. The little track from the main road is fine for ordinary cars, and not difficult to spot once you have done it once or twice. Great for star gazing as no light pollution at all. Could clearly see the Milky Way. We loved this part of Wales and our stay in Bryn Re.

We found it a really wonderful house with great bath and shower and general facilities and very tasteful decor.
Thank you very much for providing hard copies of instructions for everything - we would have been lost without it as we aren't very good at looking things up on our phones. The only thing we were a bit unhappy about was that there isn't a big enough pan to cook pasta for 5 - we were 3 adults plus a hungry 15 year old and 11 year old. With that lovely big colandar for draining pasta we found this strange. A smaller sieve would be good too for washing fruit and vegetables. What the place needs is a pasta pan with steaming pans on the top to do vegetables. We enjoyed the giant oblong dish in the cupboard and as I had brought the Quick Roasting Tin recipe book we used that dish every day. With that fierce electric hob we found the three thin frying pans a trial. Otherwise it was a really excellently fitted out place to spend our holiday in.
