What our customers say about their holidays

    • Amanda - Verified booking

We booked Pen-y-bryn for our 2 week honeymoon.

It didn't disapoint! On arrival our cottage was open for us to get into. The cottage was clean, comfortable and very well equipped. There was a welcome pack of ground coffee with a cafetiere, a trio of jams/chutney and some tea, coffee, sugar. Under the sink was a cleaning kit that also included a few dishwasher tablets. There was also a hoover, tea towels, oven gloves, bin bags, recycling bags and food waste bags. There were clear instructions regarding waste and recycling. The bed is VERY comfortable and the shower room is bliss! The towels provided were a really good quality and size, not postage stamp sized like other cottages we have stayed in! Jamie and Claire came and personally greeted us and ran through some 'housekeeping' such as hot tub operation, swimming pool, games room, recycling, and fire pit. They also gave us some amazing restaurant recommendations and places to visit. Jamie, Claire and their children are all lovely and very approachable. It is worth having a read through the guest book and noting where others recommend too. The whole complex was immaculately maintained, and the trades people we encountered were all friendly and approachable. We had a boiler issue which they sorted very swiftly. There are so many things to see and do within an hours drive of Canllefaes. The location of Canllefaes is very peaceful and waking up to hear the birds is simply bliss. There is a petrol station at the top of the drive that sells a small selection of groceries. There is a Tesco, Aldi and B&M approximately 7 min drive from the complex. We have made SO many happy memories and are already looking to book for next year.

The one good thing about this property is that the garden is far more enclosed than expected.

So the dogs could be watched but didn't have to be kept on a lead all the time. However that is where the good things stopped. The property is very damp, as a family member suffers from asthma we considered going home early but having travelled six hours to the cottage decided to stay for the majority of our booking. To minimize the problem we had to keep the windows fully open night and day whenever we were in, which unfortunately meant the VERY loud road noise woke us early every morning as the cottage is maybe thirty feet from the roadside. Also the advertised Sky TV is no longer connected, the satellite dish is hanging off the wall and you are limited to Free-sat - but because the wifi is so slow that it is practically non existent, there is no means to stream any TV shows. You have to watch live or not bother. I too ran a speed test which came back as 25 Kbps maximum ie 0.02Mbps which reminded me of the early 90's. We would have brought a DVD player with us had we known, as Amazon Prime or Netflix or any of the terrestrial catch up channels just wouldn't work. We eventually used our mobile phone as a, "hot spot" to be able to check emails but as we don't have unlimited data that was about it. As the sofa has no cushioning whatsoever and needs to be replaced you wouldn't want to sit too long anyway, it is like sitting on a church pew. We did contact Sykes and sent them a photograph of the black mould on the, (unnecessary) bathroom curtains but have never had the courtesy of even a reply. Lovely area and we are back in December but we won't stay at Panteg again.

Fern Cottage in Aberporth is lovely, offers nearly everything you need for a great holiday.

The house is nicely decorated, and included all the facilities most people would need to make an enjoyable stay. The safe enclosed garden is a superb extra. The fact that no where in the village is that far to walk is also a real bonus. We did have some problems with the shower head (needs a new fitting to make it stay upright) but we were able to still use it during our stay. It might also be worth the listing stressing to anyone booking the cottage that the short walk up and down the hill to the beach/ local pub/car parking area might cause some people with mobility problems or families with small children an issue. We were okay with this but with no pavements and a reasonably steep hill to walk up we would expect anyone arriving without knowing this might be surprised and it could ruin their stay (although they ought to be aware before booking they are holidaying in scenic Wales) It's a shame that there are still regulations around the previous visitors book as we have been on UK cottage holidays for over 30 years and always find these a first stop in arrival as they are a very useful addition to help quick navigation to best places to visit/eat/shop in the area we are staying. Our stay was so enjoyable it left us knowing we will be booking to stay in that area again in the future.

The cottage was not clean when we arrived.

The problems were as follows: The cleanliness problems are as follows: - Black Dog Hair on Floor - Black Dog Hair in Bath - Black Dog Hair on Childs High Chair. - Floor Generally Filthy (Daughters Clothing on the Knees and legs went from White to Brown in 2 hours) - Dust on Lampshades collected with hair. - Dirty Bowl left under Sofa. - 5 Dog Poos left in the Garden (we checked when we arrived) - Crockery requires a clean before every use. More general problems include: - The shower Head does not retain its position. This is an easy fix. - The shower Shelf is Broken. This is an easy fix. - The drawer in the Kitchen (R of the Dishwasher) is broken. This is an easy fix. - There is Black Mould/Damp in the Master Bedroom which is where the cot is. This is noxious and needs to be dealt with and not hidden behind furniture. We told the owner and they had the cleaning company contact us. The cleaning company made 1 slot available on Monday which was not possible as they demanded we not be present in the cottage at the time and our 1-year-old knaps between 0930 and 11. They offered 1000. I was not prepared to spoil her day so I did a full clean myself on Sunday morning.

When we arrived the cottage was filthy, dog hair everywhere and used bedlinen and towels.

We asked for help and messages showed they had been read but we got no response. It was really upsetting, especially for our children. We had to clean the bathroom and strip the beds ourselves and organise to borrow bedlinen. This isn't what we should be doing on our holiday! We weren't able to enjoy the property as described for the first 2 days, but are still waiting for any compensation. The outside bins are over-flowing, the kitchen oven, microwave and cupboards have not been cleaned at all, cushion covers all need a wash, the bath plug doesn't work and basics such as tea, salt, toilet paper weren't provided. I have never experienced anything similar in many years of visiting West Wales. I have photos evidencing all of this. I truly can't understand not apologising or providing compensation. They haven't even bothered to return the bedlinen we borrowed yet and we are expected to keep using our time to chase. We have clearly not received the service we paid for and will be pursuing the matter if required. Everyone should receive a clean, comfortable welcome to start their holiday and if problems occur they should be communicated and addressed swiftly.
