Overall, The Lantern is a beautiful place.
Itâs well located for exploring the village and its many attractions. Itâs not far from many other great locations. The home has been finished wonderfully, but there were a few niggles. On arrival we were missing key elements for our stay, including wood and matches for the fire (given how cold it was during our stay, weâd hoped to use it regularly). Wood was shortly delivered but the store wasnât filled, so we ended up getting more from the shop. The house guide wasnât there for us, so we didnât have any information for the property (we found some pages on how to light the fire eventually but that was all). The WiFi was shared by the host. Our hosts were also away for the weekend, so on later discovering we also had no washing up liquid left (apart from one small squidgy in the bottle) and no dishwasher tablets, they werenât able to assist so we brought our own. While I donât expect to necessarily have all you need, it felt like it had been forgotten to be restocked. Especially as on a hunt to locate more we came across a cupboard that had more of all the things we didnât need (coffee pods, ear buds, laundry detergent), but not those we did. We were only provided with one bin bag for a week with no others in the property to be found. Luckily on purchasing more wood, we ended up with several of those bags. There was also a strong smell in the bathroom, so we had to have the window open for the entirety of our stay (during icy weather) in the hopes of dissipating it, but unfortunately it never went away. While the pressure of the ensuite shower was great, there were some mouldy residue patches, and the main washroom looks like it once homed a shower and seeing that reinstated would mean not having to awkwardly be in somebody elseâs bedroom to change. The one parking space with two double rooms seems like a misstep, thereâs plenty of space to extend the driveway even by a couple of feet to allow for two cars comfortably. As the property seems more aimed at adults, it would make sense to allow for two cars, especially given how expensive the nearby parking is per day. With some will power and creative parking, we were able to just about fit two smaller cars in, but lack much space to get in/out comfortably (with the cars touching, as paying >=£10/day for a week was too much). Finally, adding a small side table in the living room would aid being able to put your drink somewhere more within easier reach to the armchair. As I say, the location and property itself is lovely, as somebody who adores penguins I was delighted to be able to so easily visit the only Kings in England. Itâs far enough from the bustle of the village that it is perfectly peaceful, while still all being walkable within the village. (If youâre planning a trip to the Mousetrap inn, you will struggle for parking!). We were provided pods for the coffee machine (luckily I knew how to use it, but there were no instructions for my fellow guest who did not, perhaps in the missing guide?) which often times youâre not. Once we had gathered the missing items (which Iâm sure would have been provided by our hosts if they had not been away), we had a lovely stay.

The property was excellent!
We stayed for four nights as a couple. First impression: easy to locate, generous parking spaces, very clean outside and inside and tastefully furnished. The "welcome pack" (bread and milk) was a nice touch. Downstairs WC was handy. The house has been very thoughtfully equipped. And we had a peaceful stay - neighbouring properties were quiet and although the house is next to a road, it didn't disturb us much at night. It was our first visit to the Forest of Dean area and we had a delightful time - saw deer a few times and wild boar! We are definitely coming back and hope to stay in this property if available. The only downside - which is really down to the area - is the poor mobile phone coverage; we used 02 and Vodafone but there was very poor or no mobile phone and mobile internet reception in the Forest of Dean area. Not really a problem for us really as we enjoyed the peace and quiet and could use WhatsApp or Wifi calling for anything urgent :)

We stayed at the house for 5 nights in early April.
The positives: Great location for visiting the Wye Valley & Forest of Dean. Comfortable beds & nice shower (as you would expect in a new build property). Nice and warm. Good off street parking and a bike storage box. The not so positives: We had no idea that there would be planned construction work going on very close to the property, which started noisily at 7:30am (new houses being built). We would not have booked the property had we known, as we wanted a really relaxing time following a recent stressful event. I believe the listing has been updated now so that future guests are aware. Within the house, a few coat hooks downstairs and a proper wardrobe upstairs would be great.

A perfect stay in a perfect property.
The Old Paper Shop is an ancient building, made comfortable and conveneient by careful updating and furnishing. The decor is beautifully in keeping with the age of the property. The bed is very comfy; the shower is excellent. The kitchen is tiny, but has been thoughtfully designed and provided with everything we could need, even down to salt and pepper! The property is right on a main street in the centre of Tewkesbury, but effective double (and then doubled again!) glazing meant we heard no traffic noise once inside. Tewkesbury itself and the surrounding countryside are full of picturesque and historic interest. We would defiitely recommend The Old Paper Shop.

A beautifully modernised cottage, very convenient for the shops in Wotton - just a 10-15 minute walk.
We stayed in January to meet up with family nearby, when the temperatures were around freezing, but the heating in this cottage kept us lovely and warm at all times. Probably the best appointed holiday home we've ever stayed in. As mentioned in the description, the stairs are a bit steep and twisty, but there's a sturdy handrail to hold on to as you go up and down so they didn't cause us a problem (we are in our 70s). A few low beams and doorways to watch out for especially if you're a bit on the tall side, but at the end of the day it's an old cottage and very cosy inside. Will definitely book again when we need to be in the area.
