On the whole the property is a characterful, beautiful and historic cottage, it has ample outside space and the setting is fantastic.
Unfortunately on arrival, we thought that the property was not cleaned to an acceptable standard. Whilst areas had been cleaned, much of the homes carpets and upholstery were not clean, dusty corners, cobwebs, and just a general feeling of uncleanliness was evident throughout all rooms, the kitchen floor in need of a scrub and polish, in addition to a lingering odour that bestows homes of dusty and slightly dirty nature. At 6pm following a full days travelling, we really did not intend to contact the holiday agent to commence a dispute, so we spent the first hour of our holiday hoovering and cleaning. We are practical and down to earth people, so it wasn't the end of the world to us. However, with a baby who would be crawling on the floors we needed to get it sorted there and then. We called into the Salcombe agents office for the property to inform them as we were passing by. We are not expecting action, we were just informing them of our experience. They suggested that we should have contacted them straight away and sent photos so that they could send cleaners out. This just wouldn't have been workable at 6pm on a Friday evening when we are knackered and need to get the kids down. Sending cleaners for a quick spruce up wouldn't have helped much, it's not necessarily the regular cleaning, but that the property needs a serious deep clean, the vac is a 25 year old Henry, so unless there's some emotional attachment to it, he probably needs replacing. The only mattress that seems fit for purpose is a single in the middle room, the rest, along with the pillows have the ability to reshape your back and neck into arrangements only a qualified chiropractor can sort out. A special mention to the fridge, whose noise became so loud at one point we thought it might be trying to communicate. A minor issue. Many areas were good however, the new cooker and hob were fantastic. The Amazon TV stick worked great for the kids. The single child's room decor was really fun. The house is of an age where you expect the quirks, and much of the decor fits well with that character and helps you disconnect from life back home. A side note, the nearest pub didn't do any food, although was welcoming. The Royal Oak further round was pretty bad, the bar lady served me whilst on her phone, empty glasses littered the place, with areas caked in dust. I love a dive bar now and again but this place took to a new level. We had fantastic weather with some brilliant visits to local villages and towns. We've made some wonderful memories and the cottage played a good part in that. The areas mentioned let it down, so I'm not sure we would return. I think the areas mentioned are fairly easy to address though.

We arrived just before 3pm, at the same time as the cleaner so not the best start to our holiday.
No communication re this. Cleaner was very quick but not very thorough. She also arrived before 10am on the day of departure which wasnât very helpful either. The property isnât in the nicest park of Kingsbridge. The car parking space wasnât allocated and therefore wasnât always available leaving us having to try and park on a not particularly nice street at times. Various items of crockery, cutlery, oven mits etc were soiled/sticky, with remnants of food etc on them. The shower tray didnât drain on arrival so we were left from Friday to Monday without being able to use the only shower in the property. The TV screen was marked/scratched but subsequently cleaned by maintenance so presumably just dirty. Sykes were very helpful and reassuring re all of the above. The person that called from Coast and Country was rather defensive and dismissive. No additional toilet rolls, bin bags, cleaning products were left in the property. There are also no tea towels or hand towels for the kitchen. With the unfortunate bits out of the way the property is very nicely decorated with very comfortable beds and sofa. Thereâs plenty of crockery, cutlery etc to use during your stay. Thereâs also plenty of cupboard, fridge/freezer space. No wardrobes but good sized hanging rails and lots of drawers. Itâs so light inside and thereâs a lovely courtyard garden with a nice view from one corner. Bed linen was nice and plenty of bathroom towels were left. Kingsbridge and the South Hams are lovely. Kingsbridge has some good delis, a cinema, ice cream shops and various independent shops to mooch around. Thereâs lots of great beaches; South Milton, Bigbury, Mothercombe. Lots of lovely places to eat nearby. The Oyster Shack is a must, youâll need to book in advance though. The ferry to Salcombe is lovely and the staff had great local knowledge for lovely things to do during our stay. We had lovely weather to really enjoy the area. Weâve booked several cottages through Sykes before and all has been well, I donât think weâve booked directly with Coast and Country before. Would we stay again, Iâm not sure, Iâd like to think this was a one off bad experience itâs a little disappointing that no one has checked in with us to check everything was resolved. Weâd definitely stay in Kingsbridge again as itâs a really nice part of the country.

No frills cottage in a great location.
We were concerned about previous reviews and as is clear in the photos, Highdown is an older cottage which still feels more like a residential than a rental property. The owner had worked hard to make the place clean and fresh for our arrival, even down to a new coat of paint in the utility room. Good points - the house was generally comfortable (although the mattress in the master bedroom should be replaced), the kitchen was well equipped (though no pantry provisions except salt and pepper) - it was not at all spacious, as stated in the description but certainly adequate, there is a large fridge freezer in the utility which is useful, the wifi and TV were excellent, the conservatory when sunny was delightful, the fire was cozy and the garden a nice size (although not completely dog-proof - a tenacious terrier would squeeze through the front gate in a second). The driveway was tight, but we managed to get our Landrover 4x4 in with a bit of skilful manoeuvring (on my part). Less positively, we arrived in a wet and windy Easter week and storage heaters hadn't been turned up so the house was very chilly. On colder days I think the heaters struggled to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the day and into the evening. The bathroom needs some storage (shelves, a bathroom cabinet?) as there was nothing to accommodate the smellies of 6 people and the provision of towels were a disappointment. Not sure why they state they are provided when all you get is one thin medium sized towel to last a week and no hand towels. I suggest you take your own. The owner however was responsive and did provide an extra electric radiator and a couple of hand towels on request. All in all we had a nice stay as Bigbury on Sea is a heavenly location for kids of all ages and dogs - The Journeys End pub has superb food. I wouldn't rent this cottage again as I think its rather basic and overpriced, but if you have realistic expectations it is a nice base from which to explore the area.

Wow...
Bigbury-on-Sea is beautiful. Highdown is situated at the top of a very steep hill. Beautiful views to Burgh Island, which is worth a walk over, even just to have a drink at the Pilchard Inn. Little cafe/takeaway down on the beach car park which is pretty basic but lovely food. There is a food store within walking distance on a caravan park along with Fryer Tucks fish and chips (also very nice) but it is along quite a narrow cliff path. WiFi was very hit and miss but kind of expected that to be honest. Make sure you visit Pickwick Inn (pub) which is so lovely. Great food, lovely atmosphere and very dog friendly. Beware of the narrow lanes in the area, cars go pretty fast round them and although there are pull in places it does get a bit scary at times. Highview itself is a lovely bungalow. Pretty dated but we quite liked that. Could have been a bit cleaner but very cosy and warm. Loved sitting in the little dining area looking out to the sea even when it was raining. The garden is lovely too, wraps around the whole bungalow and is very safe for dogs. On two occasions we did have a chap come right through the garden to the shed at the back apparently to collect laundry? If heâd of knocked and said he was about then we would have been happier but to suddenly see a man walking around outside was a bit unnerving. The patio area again is lovely but not for small children. Thereâs quite a drop down a grass bank at the front of it. All in all we went away as a family of four (2 grown up children) after having an illness for most of the year to have some quality time together and a well earned rest and thatâs exactly what we did. Would we go back there again? Yes definitely

Unfortunately I would not stay here again.
The cleanliness is to be questioned. The oven smoked due to the amount of grease on the bottom that hasn't been cleaned and the grill tray was covered in old grease. Photos taken as proof. The cutlery and crockery also had to be washed before use. To which I might add that the water temperature isn't hot enough for greasy dishes. Also the aluminium blinds in the living room look like they haven't been cleaned in a very long time. Photos taken as proof The toilet seat is missing one of the fittings and has been stuck with silicone. The only place to put the toilet roll is on top of the toilet or the side of the bath. As my husband turned to reach for the toilet roll, the seat moved. Photos as proof The 2 seat sofa has an odour of vomit, this was noticed when we sat to watch the TV. The double bedroom has an odour of stale sweat which was apparent when the door had been shut. There is a lack of privacy at gillys cottage as every resident passes by the window to get to the car park. Also in the ad for gillys it shows benches to sit outside, it doesn't explain that the ones for gillys are through the other side of the car park and down a steep grass bank. Due to the above issues we cut the stay short and left 3 days early.
