What our customers say about their holidays

    • Maria - Verified booking

We stayed for a long weekend, 3 families with small children.

Here are my pros and cons: Pros: - Lovely house. Modern but with a lovely cottage feeling. - Modern spacious kitchen with all you need for cooking meals. - Very comfortable beds, spacious bedrooms that allowed us to accommodate comfortably a travelling cot. - Enough bathrooms for everybody, good water pressure. - Spacious driveway that accommodates several cars. - Lovely outdoor space, with horses and a pond full of fishes that the kids loved and enjoyed. - Easy to find with google maps. - Gated estate with security pin to enter and security cameras. - Dogs welcomed. - Underfloor heating. - Overall very clean. Cons: - The price. It was ridiculously expensive compared to the following weekend and for what it was. We felt we were ripped off. - It is NOT suitable for small children. Too many stairs, steps, decorative items, formal sitting room and dining rooms filled with things children would love to touch, we had to shut the doors for those rooms unfortunately. - Not enough instructions on how to turn off the underfloor heating. It was a very warm weekend and was very uncomfortable having the underfloor heating on and we didn't know how to turn it off. Summary: Although the house was beautiful and very comfortable, we could not relax as we had to be constantly on the guard keeping the children safe from all the steps and stairs, etc. Perhaps the experience would have been different for adults only or older children. The price for that weekend was a total rip off, we felt it was for some reason very inflated and unreasonable and we regret making the decision of using this site and staying there. In addition, the cancellation is not flexible at all making it very difficult to accommodate for the unforeseen and there's no option to pay additional for a cancellation insurance. For this reason we won't be using sykecottages again.

I booked the Barn to celebrated my husbands 60th Birthday with all the family.

The Barn was fully equipped with all kitchen accessories, lots of storage, a large fridge, enough crockery and cutlery for 12 people. The only things you need to take are your own personal toiletries and food. There was more than enough room for 8 people. The whole family found it very comfortable. The owner Deb's as very accommodating allowing the Children age 5yrs and 2 1/2 yr old to see the horses and chickens. The long drive allowed the children to ride their scooters without any fear of traffic under our supervision of course. There is plenty of walks in the area, all detailed in the information booklet and only 40 minuet drive to Southport. The whole family thought the Barn was fabulous . Our daughter has booked her family summer holiday in Cornwall through your company after spending a weekend at Rose Hips Barn. Thank you Sykes Cottages for making our family celebration just what I wanted, and I found it value for money.

Lovely house and garden, so peaceful bearing in mind that it is so close to the railway line but we didn't find it disruptive as trains are electric, relatively quiet and went past quickly.

Downstairs loo was an added bonus for us oldies with creaky joints, no stairs to climb every time the loo was needed. Double bed was so comfy, we slept really well and the walk-in shower was another bonus for us not having to climb in and out of a bath. Kitchen had all the equipment you could need for dining at home. The only downside for us were the sofas, too low for creaky jointed people but sitting on a bundle of cushions soon sorted that problem out. Would recommend a walk into the Village down the pathway by the side of the railway, lovely cafes and restaurants within walking distance and if you fancy visiting a 'real' pub (still has a taproom) then you can't do much better that The Upsteps, the patron and clients were so friendly when we visited to watch a Liverpool game on Sky Sports. We had a really comfortable, peaceful and fab stay at Spring Close. Thank you to all concerned. Cathy & Kevin May 2022

Rose Hips Barn is a lovely place to stay.

The location is excellent as it is surrounded by beautiful countryside yet it's only a short drive to a busy town with a railway station, supermarkets and cinema. The barn is very spacious, with excellent views over fields to the nearby hills. The rooms are all large and all facilities are available and well maintained. Apart from the main bedroom the rooms upstairs do not have good views, but there is plenty of light from rooftop windows. We had a small problem with the owner's two dogs who barked and howled when they were left alone - but they were quiet in the evening so it wasn't too much of a problem. Some storage space in the "family bathroom" would be appreciated as there's nowhere to put toothbrushes etc. On the other hand there's loads of storage space elsewhere in the house. I would recommend this barn to anyone who would like to spend some time in this area.

This break was for my husband to spend quality time with his two girls and his grandchildren.

The cottage facilities certainly enhanced the time spent together. There was enough room for the little one to have her sleep time in quiet during the day while the rest of us had family time together. The amenities in the bedrooms meant everyone had an ensuite except us who had the bathroom which meant with nine of us in the cottage there was no waiting to use the loo! etc. The cottage is situated in lovely countryside but near to many places to visit. The owner left us some lovely biscuits, a bottle of wine and a bottle of milk for us on arrival which was very much appreciated. The kitchen is very well equipped for use and provides well for the number is the cottage. The beds were very comfortable and all slept well We had a wonderful holiday in this cottage and many happy memories made with our family, thank you. Maureen Wolstencroft
