What our customers say about their holidays

    • Susan - Verified booking

This is the worst cottage we have stayed in due to the bad smell in the house.

When we arrived there was a bad smell of a combination of damp, mould, sewer and ‘wet dog’ smell We noticed small clumps of black hair all over the carpet so I used a damp cloth and soapy water to lightly clean the carpet. I had to change the water 3 times as it was black. The bedroom carpet had clumps of hair over it too. There was mould on the wall behind the sofa that also smelt. The sofa also smelt bad too. When we used the toilet upstairs there was a very strong smell of sewerage coming up from the sink in the kitchen. We discovered the plumbing had been installed incorrectly. There were several damp spots on the bedroom ceiling that appeared after it rained too. There were slug trails all over the lounge carpet each morning too. The duvet cover smelt of ‘cheesy feet’ A man cannot stand up to use the loo due to the very low ceiling. The whole place had an air of neglect. There is no private courtyard as stated in the description as it is a communal turning area for vehicles. Despite the bad accommodation we enjoyed our holiday in Shropshire as we went out every day, all day, to get away from the cottage

We had a marvellous week at The Wheelhouse.

It's a lovely cosy cottage, well equipped and very comfortable. The host Carole lives on the premises and she is very welcoming and knowledgeable about the area. The kitchen is quite small but the porch at the front is kitted out as a utility room and is very convenient for wet coats and muddy boots - not that we had that problem, we were lucky with the weather. Some people have commented on train noise. It's true that the railway line runs very close to the cottage but we were soon pretty oblivious to the trains going past. The cottage very well placed for exploring the Shropshire Hills and we simply put our walking boots on and walked out of the cottage for most of our stay, Caer Caradog in one direction and the Long Mynd in the other. One day we got the car out and went to Stipperstones and on another day we caught the local bus to Shrewsbury. If you fancy this cottage, please bear in mind it is very rural. There is mud, there are spiders and bats and birds, but for us, that's part of the charm. Thoroughly recommended for a get away from it all holiday.

We could not find any information sheet showing - the nearest medical facilities, recycling facilities, ATM, Petrol, Vets, Church, Supermarket, Post Office, Park & Ride, etc.

WE HAD NO VISIT BY THE OWNERS DURING OUR STAY. Early doors, we made contact with the owners, by mobile phone, about the appalling wi-fi but nothing was done. The situation of the property needs to be emphasised that access is by a single-lane, poorly maintained. road which is also used by farm vehicles, commercial vehicles as well as residents, dog walkers, and pedestrians. On property maintenance, the sugar caddy contained solidified contents, the tea container had 2 two Earl Grey tea bags and one teabag of doubtful origin. The coffee container had 3 coffee bags on top of some instant coffee granules, again of doubtful origin. Apart from a smart TV, there was no CD or DVD player. 'Attention to detail' would be my watchword. Oh, I couldn't find the carbon monoxide alarm recommended on the last 2023 central heating boiler service sheet, found in the kitchen. I am/ we are NOT mystery shoppers, just Jo Public with reasonably wide experience of using self-catering both here, and in the. USA, Canada, and Western Europe.

The cottage was cosy and comfortable the owner carol was a delight to meet and her home made cake and fresh eggs was excellent my only negative point is the constant inter city trains that run right behind the cottage for me it made it very difficult to sleep because they ran throughout the night the railway was meters away from the property I have made a complaint to Sykes team without any joy I feel my holiday was ruined because of this I feel that there should be something wrote up in the infantry to let others know about location of how close this cottage is so I do not put any blame on the owner she is a lovely lady my dissatisfaction is with skyescottages for not putting this in the description so looking forward I will definitely not be using them again which is a great shame because this is the fifth cottage we have holidayed in but on mentioning this to the complaints team it made no difference at all just goes to show how the applicant there costumers
