What our customers say about their holidays

    • Paul - Verified booking

We had been looking forward to our break to celebrate our 20th Wedding anniversary - unfortunately the expectations of the above description didn't meet the standards.

On arrival preparing to store food in the freezer the door was extremely difficult to open - indeed the cupboard door and dislodged from the freezer door and although maintenance team "repaired" it twice it was no better. We ended up opening the fridge door to lever the freezer door. The advert stated 'towels supplied' which consisted of one bath towel and one hand towel each. With shower, hot tub (which didn't exist), jacuzzi and sauna it was a good job we had brought plenty of beach towels. Saucepans had very loose handles, fortunately a handy tool in my car prevented any mishaps. The EV charger was only connected after we raised the issue with the site management on our second week! The vacuum cleaner on/off switch did not work - the mains was the only control. Due to the lack of towels (and lack of clean bedding) we hoped to use the washing machine but alas that didn't work - we identified the challenge on the Monday morning - despite maintenance staff and washing machine engineers attending the issue was not resolved before our departure (6 days later). Many of the "streetlights" were not working - therefore walking the dog could be hazardous. The toilet provision is small and would benefit from a towel hook and somewhere to store soaps & toilet rolls. Instructions for the equipment and facilities were very generic (probably site wide) and so confusing which meant a lot of trial & error. Before we left the site, we were phoned by the remote office with apologies for all the trial and tribulations and assurances we would be compensated (we had paid a lot of money for our 10 day stay) however to date no such provision has been made or offered. The caller also identified as we were staying for over a week, we should have had a housekeeping visit to change bed and towels - obviously this did not occur. We do pay tribute to "Tracey" whom I had regular contact with, and she tried hard to appease us on our complaints and challenges but obviously she was limited on her capacity to correct all the mishaps. I think it very unlikely we would recommend the sites to anyone who has our home address!!

      Well, what can I say!

My only regret is that our holiday was for one week, rather than two. I booked this break for my partner's 60th birthday. To my suprise, we had balloons and a bottle on arrival, which was a lovely suprise. The lodge was over and above our expectations. There was everything you needed, from washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, all the kitchen essentials, with a small dining area for two. The walk-in shower was great, especially if you have mobility issues. The bedroom was both comfortable and spacious. The living area had a comfortable settee and large TV, where you were able to sign into your Netflix. Wi-Fi was available free of charge. The cinema room we used quite a lot, as there were two comfortable reclining chairs. The lodge itself was bright and airy. Very private, no one overlooking, so relaxing and peaceful. Not to forget that these properties are self-catering, although you have the bare essentials, take your basics such as washing up liquid, washing machine detergent, kitchen roll, toilet rolls, waste bags, etc. Any essentials that you would use at home, take with you. The location is easily accessible and easy to access the villages, harbour towns and seaside resorts. A beautiful part of the country and certainly well worth seeing. The weather could have been better, which prevented us from using our roof terrace. This would have been great in the good weather. Unable to comment on jacuzzi bath and sauna, as these were not used. The site is secure, well maintained and there are facilities to dispose of your waste. My partner and I tended to buy from the bakeries and take back to our lodge. There are the usual supermarkets not too far away, such as Lidl, Morrisons, Aldi and more. Also Trago Mills is a stones throw away! The staff are extremely helpful, very approachable and nothing is too much trouble. We both felt totally relaxed after our stay and we shall certainly be booking again in the future. All the pictures shown of the lodges are true. What you see, is what you get! We both look forward to our next stay. Thank you Sykes Cottages.

We stayed for a week and had mixed feelings.

CONS: We specifically searched for properties with a hot tub. THIS PROPERTY DOES NOT HAVE A HOT TUB. It has a large jacuzzi inside so was misleading. A nice touch was finding a TV to watch when in the jacuzzi but this does not work and apparently the intention is not to replace it. Car parking was the opposite side of the cabin to the entrance. This generally isn't a problem for most but for disabled people it meant loading and unloading the car took a while, particularly when trying to pull a suitcase over the gravel. Twice during our stay the boiler lost pressure which meant no hot water or central heating. Thankfully the underfloor heating in the kitchen area and shower room was effective so we still had one warm room. Maintenance service was prompt. PROS: The cabin itself was very well equipped and tastefully furnished with quality fittings. It was comfortable and when the boiler works, very warm and cosy. We slept well but a double duvet on a superking size bed isn't practical as there is no overhang at the sides. The shower was large and easily accessible. We were allowed to take our two small dogs and they were safely enclosed. We took blankets to use as they are not allowed on the white bedding and we didn't want them scratching the sofa. Our stay was the end of February and we found it very quiet which we appreciated. For a getaway retreat away from it all it's ideal. For those who like saunas that was an added pleasure. I do feel though that there should be adequate safety advice to safeguard those with health conditions. The local Morrisions store delivers to the site with online ordering so if you plan ahead you can have your groceries arrive shortly after you arrive. We won't be going back but will continue booking with Sykes to stay in places with a hot tub. (If the cabin had a hot tub we would).

Beautiful cabin in great peaceful and private location.

The photos online show it as it was 6 years ago when new and are not a true reflection of its current state. I do not mind paying the luxury prices if that is what I receive. Unfortunately it is tired in places; * the dining chairs are very worn and require recovering or replacing * Chairs in cinema room need the leather refurbishing. * cushions for outdoor furniture no longer exist (looks stark and less comfortable to lay on) Maintenance * Kitchen bin is in a cupboard with casserole dishes which is a hygiene risk. Would be better under the sink. *. Flooring outside shower is worn away and should be replaced *. Mould on shower caulking so caulking should be replaced. Cleaning Issues *. Dog nose marks all along the interior patio doors leading to the sauna from previous tenants dogs. *. Glass balcony on upper deck covered in moss and had to be cleaned again whilst we were there, thank you Claudia *. Steps leading to upper deck are covered in thick cobwebs from previous weeks. Each holiday accommodation I have rented from Sykes previously have been absolutely spotless and tip top condition. This one does not reach your standard currently to warrant the luxurious impression given when booking. This could soon be remedied and it would be worth every penny. I have photos should you wish to see them. Kind regards Mark and Kay

2 Southern Halt is a lovely lodge in a fantastic location and setting.

Plenty of privacy afforded by thoughtful planting and landscaping. A peaceful and relaxing environment. Obviously this is not cheap accommodation and in the main, our expectations were met. A couple of points that we found were in need of attention:- Intermittent and quite alarming noise emitted from the fridge-freezer which actually woke us up on our last morning. Reported to the receptionist upon leaving so hopefully sorted before the next guests arrived. Glass balustrading to the rooftop terrace has not been cleaned for quite some time judging by the amount of green mould. Ceiling lights in the bedroom didn’t operate. We made do with the lamps and reading lights. There were no pamphlets in the lodge giving details of local attractions and places of interest. No hooks or shelf in the shower cubicle for soap and shampoo etc. A few small cobwebs inside the lodge were missed by the cleaning crew. Many cobwebs found on the decked areas, which are inevitable. Overall a nice place to stay, however at this price point we felt it important to highlight these issues.
