What our customers say about their holidays

    • Confirmed Guest - Verified booking

This property would have four stars except for the condition of the kitchen equipment which was well below what we have come to expect from Rural Retreats. The washing machine was old and the door button broke (apparently it has happened previously) and we were unable to get our clothes out. The tumble element didn’t work. The dishwasher was corroded and rusty inside, therefore we decided to wash dishes in the sink. A couple of baking trays were dirty and very well-used. A couple of crockery pieces were quite chipped and the frying pans provided were used to the point they had lost the non-stick element. The egg cups provided were also rusted and unsightly, again they were not used. This information was reported to the email provided for Wakes Colne lodges while we were there and I advised I had photos if that would help, but no response was received. Everything else was wonderfully comfortable and we had a great relaxing break, but the kitchen equipment needs attention. This is not what we have experienced before through Rural Retreats or would expect.

I am not exaggerating when I say 'Out of this world'. We arrived on Good Friday for the Easter weekend. Our lodge was ready before check in time so we were allowed to begin our weekend early. We walked in and were overwhelmed by the size of the lodge. It is beautifully decorated and spacious and wowed us from opening the front door. My Fiance and I had the master room - this was truly outstanding. The bathroom is huge and again decorated beautifully. Our friends had the twin room and again was beautifully decorated. The views from the veranda are great and they over look the lake on the hill. The first day was a little cloudy but this didn't dampen our spirits. After unpacking we opened a bottle of Champagne as we were celebrating our recent engagement. We opened the hot tub and in we got. We stayed there for 5 hours! Anyway the whole weekend was amazing and we are already planning our next visit with our friends. Thank you so much to the housekeeper as well, she was always at the end of the phone if you needed her.

Beautiful setting and overall the lodge was lovely. However a couple of niggly points. The extractor fan in the kitchen wasn’t working and also there were no fans in the bathrooms so obviously there was a lot of condensation. One of the frying pans was very worn and pitted and was not usable I did report these issues whilst we were there. It was ideal for walking our dogs in the grounds and very peaceful most of the time. Unfortunately the people in the next lodge set off a massive box of fireworks NYE and our dogs were shaking in terror and absolutely petrified. We booked this accommodation thinking Rural Retreats would be just that! So we were extremely disappointed. If I knew there was a clause in the booking conditions forbidding fireworks then I would consider returning as we did enjoy the break until NYE.

My son is disabled so a single story was excellent. The accommodation for a holiday let was almost perfect apart from the thin walls between the living area and the bedrooms. We have a young child who went to bed long before we two. Although parched (not the owner's fault) the surrounding grounds are lovely and the lake delightful just a shame it was a hike to the top in respect of my son who was unable to go up there. To sum up, my granddaughter when, on the last day was asked if she will be pleased to go home said, "Yes but equally I want to stay here". The only real downside for us was the road because my son has a back injury and Ankylosing Spondylitis which reacts badly to a bumpy road. There is so much to do in the area and we had a lovely and memorable stay at Ramson Lodge. Than you.

The accommodation was excellent. Personally I would have liked a mirror in the second bedroom as the only mirror was a shaving one in the on suite shower room. The location was beautiful. So peaceful with lovely views. The only disappointing aspect of the holiday was that my husband and his friend found the fishing very frustrating. They didn't catch anything all week. They had spoken to the maintenance guy who said that otters had been in the lake and eaten the fish! So considering its advertised as a fishing holiday, it was a bit of a let down. But apart from that we enjoyed the week, especially the weather.
