What our customers say about their holidays

    • Andy - Verified booking

After many fantastic holidays in Sykes Cottages, I am disappointed to be submitting a negative review.

However, I feel it’s important to state the facts so other families in our situation are not left disappointed. We booked this holiday after searching through the Sykes filter for properties will pools. My sons love swimming, so the heated pool was a major factor alongside the wonderful countryside and beaches of North Wales. Unfortunately, on the evening of arrival we discovered the advertised ‘heated’ outdoor pool was freezing cold and unfit to swim in for more than few minutes. We reported this to the park reception and was informed that the broken piping was on order, and they would fix it over the next few days. It was fixed on the day that we left. On reporting this to Sykes, we were informed that the parts were on order and 20 degrees was plenty warm enough to swim in. My shivering 7 and 9 year boys confirmed that it was not. When I tried to resolve this with Skyes I was reprimanded for charging my electric car at the lodge and informed it was a fire hazard. No where in the site rules or Skyes description was it made clear that electric cars cannot be charged on site. They even had a charge point behind reception. Access to the charge point was not offered as an alternative. We paid 3 times the normal fee to book this property in the school holidays. I would expect all the facilities to be available and in good working order. Correspondence from Sykes stated: We do appreciate the inconvenience you faced when you found the swimming pool to be unavailable. The owner made it possible for you to use a hot tub as an alternative. The access to a hot tub, for one evening, does not compensate for a week’s missed swimming. Really disappointed.

Excellent location and tastefully presented lodge, close to the adjoining Warren site where all the amenities are.

Well equipped kitchen. Outside deck a lovely space. Didn’t use the barbecue but one was provided. Hot tub was also very good. Negatives: TV was a big issue for us as there was no terrestrial TV in the lounge and that was when we could connect with the site Wi-Fi, which was off more than it was on. We spent far too much time trying to sort this and on calls to Sykes who didn’t have the answers to resolve the issues, although they were helpful and kept us informed, to no avail though. Radio provided but that depended on Wi-Fi too it seemed as that kept cutting out. No instructions for any equipment, particularly the TV/Wi-Fi, hot tub, washer/dryer. This would have helped greatly. We noticed the shed behind the lodge was unlocked and we were unable to lock it and worried about the safety of the contents. No one at the site office to ask during our stay. Cleanliness was poor in the lounge and bedrooms, specifically the sofas which we found to have crushed biscuits under the cushions. None of the furniture had been moved to clean behind or under, In the bedrooms there were biscuits behind the bedside cabinets and thick dust on furniture and skirtings. Post covid particularly I expected a clean lodge would be essential. Bathrooms, towels, bed linen all very clean. En-suite toilet was cracked with a loose lid. The style and location of this lodge are its selling points and I would recommend it. We would book again provided the negatives noted were rectified.

We booked this as a last minute short break to visit family.

Nice location and holiday park; loved the pool on the one day it was sunny enough to use it! Let down by an overwhelming smell of damp throughout the property. The inside of drawers & cupboards smelt very strongly of damp, for example in the kitchen glasses had to be washed before using to get rid of the smell and I didn’t unpack as I didn’t want my clothes to smell of it. We did leave windows and doors open all time we were in, but it didn’t help. There were air fresheners but they just masked the smell and faded quickly. No extraction fans in bathroom or kitchen. Generally poor cleaning throughout, lots of dirt and dead bugs in corners, shower didn’t drain very well, clearly not been properly cleaned in a long time, this was the end of the school summer holidays. Beds were comfortable but let down by really cheap duvets and covers. There was a 2 seater sofa (not very comfortable) and 2 small armchairs, would be a real squeeze for 6 people. No hairdryer. Has everything else you’d need for a short break and would be lovely if cleaned and the damp sorted out.

Although the location of the lodge is lovely, the lodge itself is in need of attention to bring it up to a standard expected when paying this amount of money for a lodge.

The toilet seat was broken on one of the toilets making it unusable, the other toilet was cracked. The shower over the bath leaked out on to the floor making that unusable. The bin in the kitchen was broken, there was hair and sand on the rug / carpet and sofas and the general cleanliness of the lodge was poor. There is no digital or analogue television and so the TV can only be used on the Samsung app, (impossible for older people meaning that they couldn't watch any television for the week). There is no information on how to use the heating or any appliances and there is no WIFI access available from the holiday park. Outside there was rubbish scattered around the decking area including multiple security seals from the hot tub cover and the hot tub itself was not full so had to be filled and then waited for until the next day to warm up. Not the holiday break away we'd hoped for unfortunately.

We were an extended family of 10. 6 adults, 4 children, and Missy a cavapoochon. Gadlas was perfect for setting for our annual get together, ages ranging from 8yrs to 74yrs. The house was clean and comfortable. We loved the quirky chair in the kitchen and a super long wooden table. It had everything we needed to prepare meals for 10 people. The beds were extremely comfortable. The outdoor play area was thoroughly enjoyed by the children, although the stormy weather meant we were unable to sit in the lovely outdoor seating areas for long. We did however make good use of the the upstairs living area, in which all 10 of us were able to relax and play family games comfortably. The woodburner kept us all cosy and warm during the evenings although the under heating kept the house warm at all times. An added bonus was the infra red sauna, which the adults all enjoyed. Thank you Rhian.
