What our customers say about their holidays

    • Christine - Verified booking

Turnpike Lodge provides compact accommodation in the garden of the owners house.

It is clean, well decorated and warm. Ivor and Dee, the owners are friendly and helpful. There is a bedroom with wardrobe and three chests of drawers at one end near the front of the property, a small open-plan sitting/dining room and kitchen in the middle and the bathroom, with toilet, sink and shower is accessed via a sliding door straight from the kitchen. The sitting room has patio doors out into Ivor and Dee's garden which you are invited to use. We often saw Ivor and Basil the dog pottering round the garden while we were relaxing indoors. Ivor, very helpfully, stood out on the main road outside Turnpike Lodge to wave us down when we arrived and then stopped the stream of traffic so that we could reverse into the parking space-and that's where the car stayed for the week that we were there. This is an excellent base for exploring the area. Broadsands beach is within walking distance with a good cafe and a burger/coffee bar. The bus service between Newton Abbott and Brixham runs from just around the corner and from Brixham you can catch a bus to Kingswear and across the ferry to Dartmouth. You can walk to Berryhead from Brixham and we also took the bus into Torquay one day and walked back to Paignton along the cliff path. There is a fish and chip restaurant just around the corner and a One Stop shop. Points to note; Turnpike Lodge is at the junction (traffic light controlled) of two very busy roads which might be tricky for visitors not used to the noise. There is a street light on the top main road which shines straight into the bedroom even when the curtains are closed so visitors liking total darkness at night night want to bring an eye mask for comfort. Apart from the fridge, there is no storage space for food which is the perfect excuse for eating out! They serve a full English breakfast down at the cafe on Broadsands beach! Turnpike Lodge is ideally placed to explore Torbay and beyond.

Ivor and Dee made us feel very welcoming and Bazel the dog was brilliant. Ideal place for exploring the area, beach just down the road, pubs, shops and chippy over the road. When leaving Ivor gave me some seeds and plants out of there garden. Will definitely return very soon. Thank you Ivor and Dee you are friends for life we appreciate every thing you do. The lodge is in a very ideal location for exploring Dartmoor, Torbay and the rest of South Devon.

We didn't meet many of the staff but the ones we did meet were very friendly and helpful. This is probably the cleanest place we've ever stayed at. Everything was spotless and felt brand new. It looks exactly like the photos on the site. The double bed was a little uncomfortable though and also the pillows. WiFi was very good - no issues streaming. The showers were great. The kitchen was very well equipped. The cupcakes left for us were amazing! There were 4 of us in total (2 adults, 2 children) plus our dog. Unfortunately we decided to leave a couple of days early before the arrival of Storm Ciaran but we would definitely return to this site and would highly recommend it.

We found another gem in Turnpike Cottage absolutely outstanding very comfortable and immaculately clean.

Ivor and Dee were first class hosts and on site in case of any problems, which there wasn't. Ideally placed for visits within the local area places such as Torquay, Paignton and Totnes etc. Obviously we were there at the back end when the weather was hit and miss but there is a terrific garden at Turnpike Lodge for you to make use of subject to the weather. All in all we had a wonderful week and Ivor is a great raconteur who made us laugh and don't forget Bazil a beautiful and very friendly dog who visited us in the lodge.

I was happy to have found such a lovely property vacant at the last-minute and at peek time.

It was exactly what I wanted and needed, a peaceful getaway where I could rest and recouperate after an intense 3yrs . I appreciated the warm welcomed the attention to detail, little touches that showed thoughtfulness and care for the guests comfort. I was able to make use of any part of the well looked after garden. The property was well maintained and decorated to a high standard. Very comfortable double bed, with well thought out bedroom design. Would highly recommend.
