The pub is a starting point for numerous walks, cycle, and bridle paths. Black Down, the highest point in the National Park, with its pine and heather covered slopes made famous by Tennyson, is immediately accessible on foot. Next to the village green is the recreation ground (with pavilion and outside café). This is the location for cricket, football and stoolball matches, and is a launch site for hot-air balloon flights (including in winter). There are three well-maintained tennis courts, as well as outdoor zumba/fitness classes.

Within a 30-minute walk via footpaths are two further pubs, one in Henley (Winner of Good Food Pub Guide of the Year 2012, Pub of the Year Sussex Life Awards 2016), and another in Fernhurst (with popular Indian restaurant) which offers takeaway as well as eat-in. Within a 15–20-minute drive is Petworth with its antique shops, stately home, art collection (Gainsborough, Holbein, Titian, Blake), Capability Brown gardens, boating lake and open-air concerts, and Midhurst, renowned for polo at Cowdray Park. For sailing, canoeing and open-water swimming enthusiasts, Frensham Great Pond is similarly nearby. Golf is available locally at Hindhead, Old Thorns, Liphook and Cowdray. Fishing is available via Grayshott Angling club. Goodwood is 25-30 minutes away with its Festival of Speed, Revival, horse racing and aerodrome (with self-fly hire, and Harvard and Spitfire flight experiences). Chichester and West Wittering with its award-winning sandy beach are 35-45 minutes away, depending on local (seasonal) traffic.

Fantastic location if you want to relax away from everything with local shops and country pub within walking distance. The cottage was lovely, very clean and the hot tub was amazing. The owners sent us details to access a few days before so arrival was easy. Thanks you Helen and we look forward to booking again for next summer to really utilise the outside facilities like the BBQ and log burner. Highly recommended
