The Thatched Cottage in Westport offers a charming and traditional stay with stunning views and a peaceful setting. Guests appreciate the clean, comfortable accommodations and the warm welcome from the host, including the occasional mention of scones on arrival. While some find the cottage's historical quirks endearing, others note the facilities could benefit from modernisation. The location is praised for its beauty and proximity to local attractions.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Most guests found the cottage clean and comfortable, with only a few remarks about cleanliness issues. The majority of comments reflect a satisfactory level of cleanliness, hence the score reflects a generally high standard.

The location is frequently described as beautiful with fantastic views, and convenient for exploring the local area. Despite some guests expecting a more remote setting, the proximity to town and beaches is well-received.

Guests report a cosy and comfortable stay, particularly enjoying the peat fire. However, some mention challenges with low door lintels and sloping floors due to the cottage's age, and a few found the space cramped for larger parties.

Opinions on facilities are mixed, with some guests finding them adequate and others noting they are outdated or in need of maintenance. Specific references to the kitchen and bathroom suggest room for improvement, but not enough information is provided to accurately score this category.

The host's attentiveness and the occasional welcome gift of scones are mentioned positively, indicating a level of thoughtfulness. However, as gifts are not consistently referenced, they should not be expected as guaranteed.

About this property

The Thatched Cottage is a traditional-style Irish cottage set on the outskirts of the sleepy hamlet of Drummin, 10 miles from Westport in County Mayo. Dating back over 200 years the cottage has a number of quirky features, which add to its charm and appeal, including uneven and sloping floors, low-height door frames and a traditional Irish fireplace complete with woodburner. The property provides compact, simple but comfortable accommodation with an open plan living area, cosy family bedroom and additional smaller bedroom. Outside, the lawned garden with seating offers views of the nearby mountains, while excellent walking and hiking are available from the door. Nearby Westport is an official access point for the award-winning off road cycling and walking trail, Great Western Greenway. This traffic-free route runs between Westport and Achill Island along the route of the old railway line, and enjoys some magnificent scenery including along the Clew Bay coastline. The Thatched Cottage provides lovely character accommodation in a pleasant rural area, and is a perfect base for the Great Western Greenway.

Winding leafy lanes, honeysuckle and wild roses in season, hilly areas and incredible views characterise the rural village of Drummin 10 miles south of Westport in County Mayo. Take a walk to the top of the hills to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views across Clew Bay to Clare Island, once the stronghold of Gráinne Uaile, the Pirate Queen. There are many fascinating and beautiful places to visit in this part of Ireland. Go fishing in the rivers such as the Erriff River around eight miles away, and the Delphi River in the Doolough Valley, about six miles away. The lively town of Westport nearby is proud of its rich Irish heritage and offers an excellent selection of shops, restaurants, pubs and traditional music. If you love the outdoors, head for nearby Croagh Patrick and its bracing hikes and spectacular views. County Galway is just over 30 minute's drive away to the south, and offers a wonderful day out, with glorious coastal scenery and the world-famous Connemara National Park.

Quite small but it is very cosy and warm especially with the log burner fire. You are located quite far out from the town but the views are stunning. It was clean and had all the facilities that you need. Would recommend for anyone who wants to stay in a traditional Irish cottage and appropriate for all year round what ever the weather. We had a lovely time!
