What our customers say about their holidays

    • Alan - Verified booking

The advertising for this house clearly states that the local shop is 2.

5 miles. This is not true. The nearest shop was in the local village, Roundstone, which was 11 Kilometres from the house. Your add also states that this house was a seaside location, this is untrue, the nearest beach was an area called Gurteen Beach, which was 14 Kilometres away. Now the house is on a bay, and is surrounded by water, but you couldn't walk on it like you would on a shore line. The house furniture was very outdated. The sitting room furniture was quite old and very uncomfortable for long sitting periods. The table and chairs where broken. Now the land lady did point out she only discovered that the table was broken but nothing mentioned about the chairs. The washing machine only washed the clothes it didn't pump or drain the water. There is damp patches in the bathroom walls and inside the house. The TV, was way to small. Anytime you passed by the TV, the reception went all fuzzy. There was no additional TV stations, just Saiorview. On the last day the landlady came to the house to collect extra money for the electricity and oil heating. She made her way into the bathroom and counted the towels. I already sent Hogan's aka Skyes a letter in January of this year, but no response from yourselves. The White House, would probably be only better rented in the summer. It was very cold, now we did go down in December till early January. Our additional fees was nearly 100.00 Euro, for Oil and Electricity. You have to put on the heating the minute you wake up in the morning as it was a very cold house. This house needs attention. We went for a relaxing holiday, but willed the ending to arrive so we could leave. Hadn't it been another time ( ie) outside the Christmas period and New year, we would of left and went somewhere else. There was so much wrong with this letting and personally I feel the add on your site was very misleading. Aldough I understand that any who rents their hoilday homes, don't like spending to much money on them, but seriously The White House, should close for the Winter and only open from around April to September, they should also regut the whole house and start again. Maybe they should insulate it and help keep down the oil and electricity fees. I was aware that there was some extra additional costs for the oil and electricity. Also some WiFi wouldn't go a miss. Alan.

Second holiday with Sykes cottages although they're not really cottages.

So, the above property we stayed at had issues from the time we walked thro the door, it was a very cold night and we could not understand the heating as no one was on site to meet us. The shower in one of the bathrooms did not work and if you want to watch live tv you can't you can only watch box sets on the owners netflix account but if you search you tube you can get sky news live. The bed in the main room which I had gave me a bad back albiet I earlier seen a review on SC from another previous guest about the same issue, so would have expected been rectified. The other room had no privacy at all, there is a dark net but no curtains so my holiday guest been a female was rather concerned considering there was a window opposite in the other property opposite. The annexe is a nice property but I think the above issues need rectifying, the area is so beautiful and has breath taking views on the ring of Kerry including Ladies View, the amenities of the local garage which consists of a supermarket is mainly all there is to offer close by, the nearest beach 10 mins away has a chip shop there is also a pub there but only open weekends. If you want a main town its about 1hr 10 mins away but it is one of the best drives you will ever do for scenery :) Although I have listed some issues above I must add that the sister of the owner ( who was out the country on business ) spent a lot of time with us and got the shower fixed, got the wifi updated and showed us how the heating worked, she was so kind and we appreciated all the help she gave us, thank you Patricia :)

      Wonderful holiday, thank you Henry!

The property is a thoughtfully renovated, comfortable and well equipped traditional Irish cottage, the kitchen being one of the best I've encountered. The cottage is beautifully located on the shores of Lough Melvin while a beautiful glade of trees beside the cottage provided much needed shade during the recent heatwave! There's lots to see and do in the locality though we also enjoyed swimming in the lake at nearby Derrynaseer ( an excellent alternative to crowded beaches as is nearby Garrison) cycling and walking the quiet roads, edged with lush hedgerows! It's clear that Henry takes Covid precautions very seriously which was reassuring. There were generous touches too like new toiletries and kitchen basics - and not so basics, wine and nice crisps! Although there's no mobile coverage inside the cottage, it's available a few 100 metres up the road - fine by us and promoted a sense of getting away from it all. Communication with Henry was easy at all times. We certainly plan to return - highly recommended!

Arrived later than planned due to the Dublin Swift crossing being cancelled but owner kindly left the cottage door unlocked and came by to check we were OK.

Milk in the fridge was very welcomed as we're the biscuits! Thank you. The property itself is so much bigger than it looks on the profile, it's wonderful! Sadly it was a cold and wet week so we were very grateful for the heating and the open fire in the lounge. Owner is very knowledgeable and recommended places to visit and restaurants to eat at. One in particular was very good but very expensive but I guess its still a good experience. We prebooked a medieval dinner at Knappogue Castle which was awesome and I can recommend the evening! Bearing in mind I am a disabled traveller the cottage worked really well for me and I would chose to stay again. Maybe with some sunshine next time eh Paddy!

The owners were away, as the wife had recently suffered a stroke.

We were disappointed by the quality of the towels and the general wear and tear on the apartment. There was no bath mat for the shower room, but in all fairness we didn't mention this to the owner's daughter. The shower gave one of us an electric shock and the daughter arranged for it to be replaced the same day. The apartment is divided from the main house by a "corridor" which was almost flooded by the heavy rain the day after we arrived. The apartment then smelt musty and damp for the rest of our stay, even though we used the electric heaters provided. The views are beautiful, but were marred by a camper van parked at the front of the house!
