Located 17 miles north-west of Preston, on the Irish Sea between the estuaries of the Ribble and the Wyre, the town is easily accessible. Since the middle of the 18th century, when it became popular in England to visit the coast during the summer to enhance health, Blackpool has been a popular tourist destination. Donkey rides, fish and chip shops, and theatres keep visitors coming back to Blackpool's seven-mile sandy beach and promenade. Blackpool Zoo, the Winter Gardens, the Sandcastle Water Park, the Blackpool Tower, the Blackpool illuminations, the Pleasure Beach, and the Blackpool Tower tramway are all must-sees. Nearby the seaside towns of Lytham and St Annes-on-Sea nestle along a picturesque stretch of coastline lined with pretty parks, whilst walkers and twitchers will adore the rolling sandy dunes of St Annes-on-Sea and the Ribble Estuary providing a safe haven for more than 250,000 migrating birds that return each winter.
