Guests say

Poacher's Rest is a spacious and well-equipped cottage in the scenic Peak District, appreciated for its central location and cosy atmosphere. Guests have praised the property's cleanliness, the friendly and helpful owner, and the thoughtful touches such as a welcome bottle of wine. While some guests noted issues with dampness and lighting in the lounge, the majority enjoyed their stay, highlighting the property's charm and convenience for exploring local attractions.

The majority of guests found Poacher's Rest to be clean and well-kept, with several reviews specifically mentioning its spotlessness. However, a few guests noted concerns with dampness and mustiness, particularly in the lounge area, which slightly affects the score.

The location of Poacher's Rest is highly praised for being central and convenient for accessing walks, tourist attractions, and nearby towns. Its proximity to the A6 is noted, but traffic noise seems to be a minimal concern for guests.

Guests generally found the cottage to be comfortable, especially highlighting the spacious bedroom and cosy setting. However, some guests mentioned issues with the lounge being dark and damp, and the heating system being inconsistent, which impacts the comfort score.

The cottage is well-equipped with kitchen appliances, entertainment options, and a paddock for dogs. However, several reviews raised concerns about maintenance issues such as dampness, the need for a proper shower, and the quality of the Wi-Fi, leading to a slightly lower score.

Guests have mentioned thoughtful gestures such as a welcome bottle of wine and biscuits, and decorations during the Christmas period. While these gestures are appreciated, it is important to note that such personal touches are subject to the owner's discretion and may not be guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

A lovely one bedroom, stone-built modern cottage with fantastic walks from the doorstep and great views, conveniently located between Bakewell and Matlock on the outskirts of the village of Rowsley. Next to the owner’s home, this spacious detached property is ideal for couples looking for a romantic retreat. On the ground floor there is a modern kitchen with large dining table, a utility room and a cloakroom. Step down a few steps into the very roomy and tastefully furnished sitting room. It’s a lovely place to snuggle up together and watch a movie however there’s a large comfy sofa each if you fancy some alone time. On the first floor is a double en-suite bedroom which is tastefully furnished and enjoys oodles of space. From here there’s a door out to a large roof terrace leading on to a raised decked area with patio furniture. This is a fantastic place to sit and watch the sun set with uninterrupted views to the pasture and woods adjoining the garden. There are fantastic walks straight from the door and there’s a paddock for exercising your canine friend if they’re not already worn out from a good day’s walk. With something always going on in nearby Chatsworth, Bakewell, Matlock and Matlock Bath, this is a great base for exploring everything this beautiful part of the world has to offer.

The pretty village of Rowsley is situated just at the south of stately Chatsworth - home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and a stone’s throw from the impressive tudor-built Haddon Hall. This little village has many attractions, including Caldwell's Mill which houses the last water-powered roller flour mill and a range of craft workshops, shops and a restaurant, Peak Rail, which is a rail enthusiasts dream with rides along the valley, and the Peak Village which has many designer outlet shops with bargains galore together with feature attractions, a fitness centre and an old fashioned sweet shop and ice cream parlour. Rowsley offers a range of village amenities including shops, galleries, pubs and restaurants, excellent fly fishing facilities (day tickets available from the historic Peacock Hotel) and in neighbouring Reedsmere is the superb Michelin-starred East Lodge Hotel and Restaurant. Close by is Bakewell, capital of the Peak District, and home of the famous Bakewell pudding (definitely not tart!), still made locally to an old and secret recipe. This picturesque town is at the scenic heart of the Peak District, and further attractions in the area include Gulliver's Kingdom, the shops and eateries of Matlock Bath, and Alton Towers, also within easy touring distance, making the location ideal for the whole family to enjoy.

Good paddock for dog exercise on hand. All in all a pleasant stay.

However the main living area was very dark and musty which had a negative impact on the evenings during our stay. We left a day early.
