Snaptrip says

Cockle Island Cottage in Porthallow, Cornwall, is a well-received holiday rental praised for its cleanliness, cosy comfort, and excellent location close to the beach and coastal paths. Guests appreciate the well-maintained property, its peaceful setting, and the thoughtful touches such as a welcome tray. While some minor maintenance issues and a desire for better facilities are noted, the overall sentiment is highly positive, with many guests eager to return.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The majority of guests found the cottage to be clean and well-kept, with only a few isolated reports of mould and dust. These seem to be exceptions rather than the rule, indicating a generally high standard of cleanliness.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity, scenic views, and proximity to the beach and local amenities. The peaceful village and coastal paths offer a perfect escape, contributing to a very high location score.

Guests describe the cottage as cosy, comfortable, and pleasantly furnished, with a kingsize bed and feather duvet adding to the comfort. Some guests suggested improvements like a more comfortable sofa and a bigger fridge/freezer.

The cottage is considered well-equipped by most, but there are comments about the need for a bigger fridge/freezer and better kitchen fittings. The garden and proximity to the beach are positives, but the lack of a BBQ and the complexity of the television system are noted.

Guests mention a welcome tray and other little extras that indicate thoughtfulness. While such gestures are appreciated, it is politely noted that these are not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

Set in the heart of the small fishing village of Porthallow and just a short stroll from a shingle beach, the cottage has a secluded south facing garden with patio and lawn.

Cockle Island Cottage is cosy and comfortable in winter, with a wood burning stove in the lounge/dining room, and in summer the garden offers the opportunity for alfresco dining or have a BBQ on the beach. The bedroom has a king size bed, the fitted kitchen is well equipped and the small shower room has driftwood shelves and a heated towel rail. There are books and information about local walks in the lounge.

The South West Coast Path is just 50 metres from the cottage, offering excellent coastal views across Falmouth Bay to St. Anthony's Head, and a beautiful walk to Gillan Creek and the Helford River. Porthallow beach is used by local fishermen, and it is possible to drive onto the beach to launch canoes and dinghies. A short walk from the beach on the St Keverne road, you will find a lovely café called Fat Apples which serves home cooked food; hearty breakfasts, scrummy cakes, and afternoon teas. The village shop and pub in St Keverne, just a couple of miles away, offer comprehensive supplies. Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1065077, together sleeping up to four guests.

Porthallow is situated on the east coast of the Lizard peninsula, an area known for its natural history, especially geology and plants. Along the coast, to the north, is Gillan Creek and the Helford River, and to the south is the village of Porthoustock, and offshore The Manacles, a great hazard to shipping and a popular diving site for shipwrecks. The beach is privately owned with access open to all and consists of pebbles at the higher reaches and sand at low tide. It was once the scene of a pilchard fishery.

The villagers now meet for a bring-your-own social gathering every Friday in the village hall!! Also, Sykes’ external photos do not do justice to how beautiful the cottage garden is - it’s full of flowers……..

Unfortunately on arrival, we found that the only village pub was permanently closed, which was disappointing and inconvenient as we had to travel 5 miles to the nearest pub. One of the reasons we selected this cottage was because it was stated to be less than a mile from a pub. We would definitely book the cottage again, but only if the pub is up and running. Thank you for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
