Stert Mill is a well-received cottage, praised for its peacefulness, comfort, and welcoming hosts. Guests enjoyed the idyllic setting, the proximity to the coast and moors, and the well-appointed amenities. The spaciousness and cleanliness of the cottage were frequently mentioned, alongside the appreciation for the tranquil environment and wildlife.
The cottage received high marks for cleanliness, with multiple reviews noting it was clean and well-presented. One review mentioned areas that could have been cleaner, but this seems to be an exception rather than the rule.
The location is described as peaceful and tranquil, ideal for a quiet getaway. Some guests found the narrow lanes challenging and the local walking options limited, but the proximity to the coast and Totnes was appreciated. The seclusion was both a positive and a slight inconvenience for guests.
Guests consistently described the cottage as comfortable, spacious, and homely, with comfortable beds and a cosy atmosphere. The presence of a log burner and central heating was also noted, contributing to the overall comfort.
The cottage was well-stocked and well-equipped according to guests, with all necessary amenities for a pleasant stay. However, some guests suggested improvements such as a washing line and mentioned that the circular walk was not as advertised.
Several guests were delighted by the welcome gifts, such as a Devon clotted cream tea and a cream tea welcome gift. However, as these gifts are not consistently mentioned in all reviews, it is polite to note that such thoughtful gestures, while appreciated, may not be guaranteed for every stay.
Stert Mill is a sunny cottage attached to the owner's house on a hedgerow lane 1½ miles from Diptford. Surrounded by woodland and with simple but smart décor with pale walls and wood floors, this is charming and relaxing accommodation for enjoying the peace and beautiful countryside. Take the steps up to the front door and you will find yourself in the hall. Off this, you have your spacious sitting room where you can snuggle up beside the cosy traditional open fire, and a dining room with another snug wood burning stove for which all the logs are provided. The kitchen with its slate floor is well equipped for cooking family meals using delicious fresh Devon produce. Head on upstairs to a quiet space for reading beside the balustrade on the landing, or to sleep peacefully in the three comfortable bedrooms which look out across trees and where you will be lulled to sleep by the chuckling stream outside. The bedrooms share a choice of bathroom or shower room. Outside, the stream which once turned a mill wheel passes your enclosed suntrap garden where you can light up the barbecue, or go across the lane to enjoy a good book or a picnic in the peaceful grassy area beside the stream. You are also welcome to enjoy a circular walk around two acres of woods. This is idyllic countryside where you can walk or go fishing in the River Avon or head to the open space of the Dartmoor National Park. It is not far either to wonderful beaches at Bigbury-on-Sea and Thurlestone for bucket and spade seaside fun or surfing. If retail therapy is your thing, visit Dartington where the fabulous shopping village has all the treats you could wish for, as well as good eating places. Alternatively, the old towns of Totnes and Dartmouth have attractive streets to wander and boutique shops to browse. With coast and countryside and interesting towns all around, Stert Mill is a lovely base for exploring Devon.
The village of Diptford sits in lush South Hams farmland above the River Avon valley and is ideally placed for exploring the south hams, just 5 miles from popular Totnes
