What our customers say about their holidays

Being honest, Plymouth wasn't on our to do list.

Having visited the south west many times previously, Plymouth was a place sign posted off the M5. However a week later I'm so glad we decided to visit. Royal William Yard is a lovely peaceful location. Previously a naval establishment from the 1800s, the old naval buildings are now converted into luxury apartments and a few restaurants. Prior to arrival, communication from the owner was good. On arrival day, we spoke with the housekeeper (nice lady) who met us at the apartment building and showed us our allocated parking space; plus helped with any information we required. The apartment itself is within one of the converted naval buildings and is very well put together, with just about everything we needed for our stay. We were provided with milk, coffee, tea etc plus some miniature Plymouth gin and tonics. Nice touches! The apartment (on two floors) is well decorated and appointed and was spotlessly clean. The view from the lounge window over the water was great, we spent ages just watching the various craft going past, with views towards Cremyll. Royal William Yard itself was lovely. The restaurants were good and sitting on the green in the sun was very relaxing. There is plenty to see within RWY with information displayed detailing the history of the place. We spent a number of evenings just walking around RWY plus sitting at restaurants on the waterfront. In addition there are benches outside the apartment where you can sit and watch the harbour. Access to Dartmoor and various beaches was easy. Another great day out was to use the Cremyll ferry which sets off nearby and then spend a few hours walking around the Mount Edgcumbe House and country park just across the bay. So a week later, would we visit Plymouth again - definitely. Would we visit this apartment again - most definitely!

On arrival at Cannon Folly we were immediately taken back by the beautiful location of this impressive building.

The apartment though a bit smaller than the photographs suggest was certainly of an ample size for two people. It was well maintained, very clean and had a full array of equipment. Without a doubt, the main focus of the apartment is the view. It overlooks the southern end of the Plymouth Sound. For an entire week we enjoyed having our breakfast on the balcony with the beautiful blue sea glistening in the early morning sunshine, whilst sailing boats bobbed up and down in front of the small lighthouse on the plymouth sound breakwater. We also had the pleasure of watching the odd British Warship passing through. The Fort is very well maintained complete with private harbour and a small beach. However sadly only residents have access to the swimming pool. The location is within easy reach of Kingsand Edgecoumb park and also a small passenger ferry that takes you across to Plymouth. There are lots of boat trips that will take you for a little trip around the Sound as well as further a field. It's a perfect location if you like peace and quiet but to be honest if you have small children they would have to be well supervised as the harbour and the jetties are quite exposed. This was probably the best located seaside holidays we have had since we were young and before resorts became spoilt by over crowding. Cannony Folly is definitely on the top of our list for seaside vacations.

When we arrived we could not gain access to the property because there was a fault with the front door.

We telephoned your office and spoke to two people who sounded uninterested and the second one was rather sarcastic. He or she did act on the problem and a locksmith was sent out, but we expected a much better and more empathetic response to what was a stressful situation. It was difficult to get through to speak to a person as well - on all the occasions we rang. We were offered no apology at any stage and felt we were being inconvenient. In fact we sorted the problem out ourselves, as a resident was able to access the caretaker's cupboard of spare keys and let us in (prior to the locksmith being called). After we had gained access, we did try to get through to inform you, but we had hold for a long time and gave up. The locksmith's solution was a stop gap, but held for the week. On another occasion, before we arrived at the property, we rung the office to request a late check out on our final day. A message was left on my phone and, again, the tone of the person who left the message sounded sarcastic. I ignored this at the time, but when it happened again later I remembered it, so I am mentioning it now. I'm not sure 'Helpful' Holidays really lived up to its name this time.

The property was lovely, exactly as described.

Although it was compact, we did not feel on top of each other and the space has been utilised really well. The location is very secluded so if you want peace and quiet with uninterrupted views of Plymouth Sound, this is the place to be. There are few minor negatives which did not impact our stay and would not prevent us staying again. This is more for the owners knowledge so the matters can be rectified. The DVD player doesn’t work. The tumble drier doesn’t dry clothes. The property was quite dusty. The extractor fan was caked in dust and cobwebs. Some light fittings and around pictures was dusty as well. There is a light fitting in the bathroom, and a spotlight over the hob that does not work. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay and would recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful break.

Lovely historic property, very clean & amazing views.

However the quiet was spoilt by building work starting at 8am (except weekends),as the building opposite is currently being converted into apartments. We were handed keys on arrival & told there is no easy way to get up to the apartment, just go up the very steep metal stairs and walk back the length of the building to the apartment. There are internal fire escape stairs with a return, which was slightly easier. Inside the flat the stairs were also very deep & steep, this was quite challenging for one of our party. It was a lovely place, and would love to stay here again, but for our party we would choose a different property in one of the other buildings that has a lift.
