What our customers say about their holidays

    • Steve - Verified booking

The online photos flattered the property as presented to us.

The ratings above whilst harsh, we feel are justified in this instance. The main issue we had was intermittent 'pulses' of foul smelling sewerage in the main bathroom. We reported this to Coast and Country Cottages but they were unable to trace the cause on their one daytime visit. We weren't surprised as we'd been keeping all external doors and windows open for ventilation. As mentioned, the smell was intermittent but did seem to occur mostly (but not exclusively) early evenings. We tried to isolate the possible cause by association with what we'd just done but that didn't help. The en suite macerator has warnings about placing inappropriate articles down it. Quite understood. As we don't like this type of toilet and there being only two of us, we restricted our toilet use to the conventional system in the bathroom. By mid week, we were so fed up with this sewerage problem, we minded to cut short the holiday. However, Wednesday (bizarrely) was OK smell-wise, so we didn't leave. On Thursday we had a particularly strong 'pulse' which confirmed our leaving decision. On Friday morning we popped down to Coast and Country to let the know we were leaving prematurely and why. We'd left shortly after midday. From what we could see, the property has not been let this week; this time should really be used to determine what's causing the problem. Overall, a disappointing experience which didn't reflect well on Sykes Cottages or Coast and Country Cottages in terms of monitoring the state of properties they advertise and maintain. It is the first time we have booked with these companies. Clearly, we now have reservations about using them again. To end on a positive note, the Coast and Country staff were very polite and understanding.

We have been staying in The Salcombe for over 10 years and love it.

The swimming pool and boat mooring are unique in The Salcombe. Last year we met the owners of number 32 in the swimming pool who seemed lovely and told us they had just bought number 32 and would be renovating it. We booked to stay there for the following May half term (last week). The apartment was beautifully decorated. Ordinarily we stay in a 2 bedroom apartment and had some reservations about this being a one bedroom but we didn’t need to have. The sofa bed was very comfortable, as were the single beds that our children slept on and there was ample storage in the bedroom and hall drawers for a family of 4’s clothes, bags and beach items (we bought a lot of clothes/items for the week and I like everything to be put away and tidy!) The bathroom was perfect - very modern with a large heated radiator to dry our beachwear. The kitchen was very well equipped, and best of all the fridge was big enough for a family of 4. Nice touches such as both a large cafetière but also one for an individual person, which I liked being the only coffee drinker. The only additional thing I would have liked would have been some storage in a cupboard for food. We ate out 4 times but still there wasn’t space in the cupboards to store snacks and non-fridge food. Small point as everything else was perfect. It is a beautiful and well thought out apartment, with wonderful views - perfect for a relaxing holiday.

Thank you very much for sharing your beautiful apartment.

The location is the best in the world! My father & I sailed in the Club Regatta for many years in the 70’s & 80’s & often used The Salcombe as our base. This was the first year we have come to the Town Regatta and the positioning to watch the fireworks was the best we could have asked for. We even joined in the light extravaganza & put LED lights on the balcony. The apartment is perfectly situated & presented with all the accoutrements necessary for a perfect stay. We wanted for nothing as it was so well equipped. 3 small points which could be considered: 1. Recommend double or triple glazing on the Fore Street side (or suggest ear plugs to guests) as the noise from people on the street was not compatible with sleep until after approx 2am 2. Both my father & I found the sofas rather messed with our backs as were low and soft. 3. To cater for 6 (we only had 4) the fridge could do with being a tad bigger as you can’t get 2 litres of milk in there without using up half the fridge space. (These are not meant as criticisms as we managed ok but more ideas to make it 10/10) The apartment was truly delightful and we enjoyed our stay immensely. You have wonderful taste! Thank you

We mostly loved our stay at Keel Row.

The apartment was very well equipped and the views just fabulous. However, there were some negative points. It was advertised as being a short stroll from the centre of town which we thought was perfect for us. It was a very short stroll but the walk back was very hard work. My husband and I are in our sixties. Serious gym goers as well as golf and tennis players. Even the teenagers we were with struggled. We would defo not have booked this accommodation if we had known this. We spent an extra £60 on parking whilst we were there. There is a serious issue with soundproofing at the apartment. We could her people talking, moving around, what television programme they were watching. We even heard them in the loo ! ( and worst but best not go into that other than our teenagers found it embarrassing) We also have a holiday home ourself that we rent out, we have always thought that a good nights sleep is paramount and pride ourselves that we have never had any complaints . The pillows at the apartment were just dreadfull, hard and bulky. I did complain and asked for them to be replaced. We got just the one pillow. Not good enough.

The apartment was very well kept, comfortable and had very good facilities.

Despite some previous reviewers complaining about cleanliness we found it fine. We had an issue with the pump in the en-suite bathroom which got worse over the week. We rang on the Friday morning and a plumber arrived Friday afternoon and sorted it. We should have rung earler! Appears a previous 'tenant' had put something they shouldn't down the loo, despite the clear warnings not to do so. The reason we only gave 3 out of 4 for the Accuracy of the Listing was that, although the notes did mention the steps up to the front door, we were surprised at how steep they were. Quite scary carrying heavy suitcases back down, although there is a handrail. Also the property was up very steep hills from the town (we did not know Salcombe), so by the time we got back in to the apartment we were exhausted! We are fit and healthy early 70's used to walking, but anyone who was not would really struggle with this property I think. Certainly would not be suitable for young children or for less agile people.
