What our customers say about their holidays

    • Oliver - Verified booking

Very unhappy and dissatisfied with the stay, the lack of response from the owner and the 'nothing much we can do' vibe from Sykes.

.leaving me with no resolution and having to consider other avenues. A large number of asthmatic people (me included) are sensitive to bad smells and chemicals. So I didn't expect a damp musty smelling bedroom and a portable air freshener in the bedroom. I did locate the black damp and have pictures and videos of it. Quite shocking too we couldn't open the windows or door to air the room. The cleaner did (just about and after a long struggle) the next day but the issue urgently needs sorting. It also felt a bit of a fire trap. The following day a cleaner came out, suggested the carpet did need cleaning, acknowledged the smell but I felt underplayed the seriousness and discomfort. She also commented that you wait forever for an electrician in Whitby but yet arranged for one that very day who did t just replace the light bulbs but the entire light fittings in the kitchen. First impressions were also spoilt by the kitchen having no working lights and cobwebs and dust in many places. There was a note from a previous guest saying they had informed the owner of the non working lights. However this is minor in comparison with the bedroom smells which made me cough and affected my asthma for the entirety of the stay. The owner and Sykes were made aware of this from a very early stage. Up until now no compensation has been forthcoming. I think most owners would be horrified this happened and would want to make amends asap. Not this one sadly The cottage itself is in a great location and is just a few minutes walk from the train station and close to all the main attractions. The living room area is quite nice with an attractive large cosy fire. The sofas are showing their age a bit but not too bad and the carpets all need replacing. The bathroom was fine and there's ample storage for clothes. The bed itself is cosy but the pillows are too soft. Being a basement flat the room was very dark even in the daytime. There was nothing finishing touches like milk in the fridge or a few tea bags etc. It just felt a little bit cold (on more than one level). Wouldn't recommend.

Sunset View is in a great location on the West Cliff, where everything we wanted was only a short walk away.

The main entrance to the building needs some attention decor wise. Also, the main door was very hard to shut properly & I hurt my wrist after a week of doing that several times a day. Once inside, the apartment is nice. It was clean and contained all that we needed to make our stay pleasant. There was a welcome pack too which was a thoughtful touch. A few things did need sorting - the kitchen mixer tap kept falling off and one of the blinds was broken so we couldn’t shut it at night (people do walk past staring in so we didn’t like that). Also, we found the bed mattress really uncomfortable. It was very soft and ‘bouncy’ and you sort of rolled to the edge when you lay down. We had very poor sleep while we were there. My main disappointment was not being able to fully appreciate the fantastic views we had from our kitchen/lounge windows. We could only see them through s haze of dirt. The windows were filthy and had clearly not been cleaned for a long time. There was a window cleaner doing his rounds the week we were there but he didn’t visit Sunset View… So there were good things & not so good things. We come to Whitby every year so have stayed in quite a few different properties. We probably wouldn’t stay here again due to the bed and because we have stayed in other cottages/flats that have been more spacious or comfy at a cheaper price.

A perfect location, spacious and comfortable.

Minutes into town and the excellent choices for food and drinks. However, there are a few things that could be better. After the long journey, it would be nice to have some milk in the fridge to make tea or coffee, rather than the bottle of wine left on the side. Also, no salt, pepper, coffee, etc. which is a surprise as that's just some basic stuff you'd expect to find in a kitchen. The owner very kindly arranged for a new all seasons quilt to replace what was both a very warm and very worn quilt that was originally on the bed. It definitely needed replacing! The blinds in the bedroom are very fiddly to work (the one on the bedroom door would not go up at all) so we couldn't risk putting them up once they'd been set up for nighttime on our first night. Time to replace these too we feel. There was a general lack of natural light overall but that's understandable given its position at the bottom of the building. No sprays available to clean the kitchen surfaces with and this would be helpful each day after any cooking. We had a great week in the area. The above suggestions are made to help and based on what we've experienced in other Sykes locations.

From the booking of Sunset View Whitby, this property is outstanding.

Location is brilliant with sea views and outstanding views of the coastline. The property itself has it own parking area at the rear of the building. Key code entry to front and back of property. Once entering the property itself there is nothing but quality. Lounge/kitchen - Settee which has views to the sea and coast line, tv to watch ,with everything you could watch, Internet, kitchen and all mod-cons. Leading from out of lounge is then the bathroom with electric shower, sink with electric mirror. Then the bedroom with double bed and walk in clothes cupboard for two. There was a gift pack left fir us by the owners witch was outstanding. Food to start you off, ie: milk, bread, tea/coffee, sugar, salt, pepper, butter etc and a couple of bottles of prosecco, and budweiser. Bedroom, towels and bathrobes and toiletries were left very outstanding indeed. I Would Certainly Recommend any couple wishing or looking at Sunset View this property not to hesitate, you won't be disappointed. We will definitely be back. ☆☆☆☆☆

The good bits; The property is absolutely ideal for a couple who are reasonably fit.

It has a prime location in Whitby town centre only yards from the bus station, railway station, the harbour and local shops. Internally the apartment is very well appointed and very spacious. everything you need is provided and is of good quality. The bad bits; parking is not possible close to the property. Car parks are available within a 10 minute walk at a cost of £9.00/day or pro rata. After a call to the property owner, guidance was given to where on-street parking was available, however, this was quite a distance from the property and on a very steep hill.[hence the fitness comment]. The owner provided scratch cards to facilitate on-street parking for the duration of our stay. There is no access to the rear of the property from the inside { fire safety issue] so rubbish had to be taken on quite a trek to the rear of the property and placed in the relative bins in the back yard. All that aside, we had a very enjoyable stay at the Bolthole Whitby..
