What our customers say about their holidays

The cottage is exactly as it appears in the photos.

The owner has given a lot of care and attention when updating the building and it looks amazing! We loved how small, cosy and quirky it is. The cottage is positioned in the centre of the High Street so you are surrounded by shops, pubs and restaurants which is great. The downside to being on the High Street is that you cannot park outside of the property between 8am and 6pm. We found a space on an adjoining street easily but for some people this may be an issue. The property is said to have a garden but we found this to be an alley way which was shared with a neighbour. There is a table and chairs in the alley way but you would be sitting in amongst some ladders, stacks of roof tiles and the bins for the property if you were to use it. There were a lot of cigarette butts on the floor so this appears to be a handy smoking area for those who indulge but I wouldn't suggest it to be a useable space for anything else. We had our 7 month old son with us and the owner supplied a cot which was brilliant and saved us from taking our own. However, while the property itself is child friendly the neighbours clearly aren't! On our penultimate morning our son was crying for a bottle, a situation which we always resolve in less than 5 minutes. The neighbour felt the need to bang on the wall during this short period of noise adding to the stress of trying to feed a crying baby. After this incident we attempted to not be in the property as much as possible as we did not want to offend the neighbour. This slightly spoiled the end of our stay as we were on edge if the baby made any noise. Overall we did enjoy our time at the property and it looks fantastic and is in a nice location

I found the cottage reasonably clean and comfortable.

Lack of a shower wasn't too much of a problem as I used the hand held shower over the bath but as mentioned by others it was difficult to get a constant water temperature. The availability of parking spaces on nearby streets was a concern but I did manage to get a 'space' most days on Allison Lane, glad I have a small car. Some intrusive noise from the nearest pub (2 dozen steps or so from door to door) on weekend evenings for a while but the worse noise was my last night, on the Friday. Live music in the pub was incredibly loud, went on until midnight, then customers stood outside for another hour chatting and laughing. Had to have the bedroom window open as the weather was hot this week. However they did finally decide to go home and I got some sleep eventually! This aspect of the cottage location would really put me off booking it again, unfortunately. My sister joined me later in the week and we ate out at the Rose and Crown pub where we had a fantastic meal (their fish pie is delicious) very reasonably priced, and also at The Seabirds Restaurant, another good meal there. However, the cottage is a good base from which to explore the surrounding area and for nearby cliff walks. My favourite was to park at Thornwick Bay and walk north to the RSPB reserve at Bempton cliffs. The views were stunning all the way and the photographic opportunities of the seabirds at Bempton amazing.

This little cottage on the High Street was exactly as pictured and has been restored to a good standard, but keeping it's quirkiness.

It stayed quite cool even in the current high temperatures. I did find that the TV being high on the wall made it difficult to watch. The kitchen is small but well equipped with everything you need. As previously mentioned the outdoor area was disappointing and an eyesore, cigarette ends everywhere, the property particulars does say no smoking in or around the cottage. You would also have to sit among the bins and the neighbours washing strung across the alley. Maybe a small screen across and a few potted plants would make this area more appealing. The bedrooms were quite large and the beds very comfortable, not sure about the brushed cotton bedding in the summer though, there is also a lack of coat hangers, there was only one in the wardrobe. There is also an iron and ironing board in the wardrobe which isn't mentioned in Sykes description, also it says there is a sofa bed which there isn't. The bathroom is modern, with a large open shower area. Note to owner, the shower tray needs sealing at floor level. All in all we enjoyed our stay in Betty's Cottage, and the old town, we would definitely stay again. I would also like to mention Lucy, the cleaner, for doing a good job.

The owner has done a lovely job renovating the property and drawing out its potential.

The living space is small, so seating for 5 may be difficult and it is not really that suitable for eating in. The bedrooms are quite spacious, so it is a great property to use as a base. Short-term parking can be had just opposite, and there is a free carpark just around the corner. If you do not like cooking, there are a number of take away places nearby as well, although we tended to eat out. We did walk to the beach once, with a couple of kids, and it took about 30 minutes. There are quite a few places to see, with Scarborough and York being relatively close. There is no outside space worth speaking about. This was not an issue, since we only used the accommodation. Areas where the accommodation could improve are: include 2 pillows per person, 1 seemed a little stingy; look to improve the size and quality of the towels, they were very thin and even my 9 year old daughter thought the main towel was a hand towel. Finally, consider adapting your shower to include a door. This is not essential for your guests' comfort, but you may find some less careful guests end up causing floods.

Having stayed in many different forms of holiday accommodation over the years, we have seen many different standards.

The house while vast needs an awful lot of work doing to it to make it somewhere people would choose, especially when you consider the amount it costs for the week. Whilst some of the refurb has been done, there are many aspects that with little outlay would have made the houses unfinished appearance acceptable. Yes bed linen and towels were provided but there were no cushions to the large sofa for the back and the other two were so worn you sank into them and struggled to get out. The house was cold especially in the evening, which was due to both having windows that were broken and doors that needed repair or replacement. There were no instructions for anything in the property, and no welcome pack so the basics were unavailable such as dishcloth, dishwasher tablets, fairy liquid and bin bags. We had to assume which bin to use, as no explanation regarding general waste and recycling. Curtains did not all fit the windows and some rooms did not have any or a blind. Making privacy an issue for some of us. Overall a disappointment, and somewhere we wouldn’t recommend.
