What our customers say about their holidays

    • Stephanie - Verified booking

The victorian terrace is not a cottage, the high ceilings & big rooms mean it is also, not cosy.

The house is a hodge-podge of styles & a collection of dated and cheap furniture. It reminded us of a student house. The master bed was far too soft - we had to play musical beds as none of us could bare to sleep in it. Those who did got terrible back pain. The bed covers were very dated & cheap, apart from in the twin where the bed covers carried on with the coastal blue theme. In the master, the bedside tables were dirty inside & in all bedrooms the dust along skirting boards was off putting (especially behind beds - we lost our sons toothbrush and upon searching found it behind the single bedside table matted in dust and muck). There are no blackout curtains - again very cheap window dressings. The bath slopes and when wet & soapy, a fall hazard. The lounge had a bad smell, which we later realised may have been the rodent living in the house (our terrier was very preoccupied with trying to root it out, and we heard it at night scurrying about). The faux leather sofa had a strange cheesy smell and was very uncomfortable. Both sofas very uncomfortable, mis-matched and felt cheap. The kitchen was again a mix of styles with black worn leather dining chairs against upcycled vintage ones. The cutlery drawer had crumbs & food debris in it. Upon arriving, the sink was not clean and there was what seemed to be broccoli on the tap. The bureau, where we found the recycling bags, was dirty inside and had a used foot covering in there. The unit under the window in the lounge was also filthy. The yard was referenced as a kids play area, it is not this. It is a concrete yard previously used for parking a car. The kettle was terrible and leaked water all over when pouring. Toaster too small. Again, all these things made it feel cheap. The welcome book gave a very patronising account of how one should conduct themselves during the stay, which was off-putting. Especially when, the house itself is the state it is - it felt as though the owners were cheaping out on it but expected guests to treat it like a luxury palace. The hosts left a bottle of wine and chocolates as a welcome, which was a nice touch, but the welcome card itself had greasy food/finger prints on it. The location is good for the beach and amenities, however for two of our four day stay, there was roadworks outside the house and we could not get our car out. We feel the host would probably have been pre-warned about this & should have passed that on to us. All in all, for the price this host is charging & the turn over they make, especially in high season, they should really invest more in this holiday stay. Other guests, in the guest book, mentioned the toaster and soft bed but the hosts have not rectified these issues. Will not be returning.

The cottage was attractive and in the quiet rural seaside village of Flamborough which is well placed for the Yorkshire Coast and particularly for bird watching and enjoying Bridlington and Filey.

It was very warm and cosy, it accepted 3 dogs and provided bowls, covers and bedding, and treats! However there were a few glitches. The key code we were given in all communications before the day we arrived was wrong and we could not get in until we'd negotiated contact with the managers. An email correcting the number had been sent that afternoon, but arrived just before we did, having driven for 3 hours, so we didn't see it until later. There was no tea towel or oven glove but we found one in the laundry room. There was nowhere to hang towels or clothes in the shower room (this could be remedied with a couple of cheap 'over the door' hooks and a radiator rack). There was no enclosed garden (we knew this) but the patio area was actually the gravel drive outside all the cottages where cars were coming and going (and on the morning we left, where the biomass delivery lorry was parked from 8am until 10am - the driver apologized for the noise and blocking access but it was difficult to load the car and very noisy for the other people who weren't leaving with that timing.) We only found the actual open garden where dogs can be walked the second day - it is tucked away behind hedges - a sign or two indicating where it is would help. There was no visitor book - these are helpful for things like knowing to switch the router off and on again when the internet fails if other people experience this, and getting to the garden area, as well as other handy bits of information about the area.

This should be called Hollow House not Cosy Cottage as it is very echoey and hollow.

The good side: it is near the beach, the beds were comfortable although the double was very soft. It was mostly clean inside and there was a huge tv which the kids loved. The bad side: the outside is filthy and looks like the windows haven't been cleaned for a couple of years. The curtain in the living room is torn and the net is just a small piece of single fabric. There is a tiny yard at the back with the high wall of a hotel looming behind it. No attempt has been made to make it pleasant so the view from the back is awful. To make matters worse there is also a huge extractor fan going 18/24 hours so you have to keep the windows in the back bedrooms and kitchen shut. There is no way of drying anything - no tumble dryer, not even a line in the yard - and this in a house near the beach. The decor is tatty - an attempt at shabby chic I imagine which is just shabby. The bedding is 100% cheap polyester. I have never stayed in a holiday let with polyester bedding. There towels were small and thin. There were exactly 5 usable mugs in the kitchen - the 6th was cracked all over the bottom; the fridge was small and the bottom shelf on the door had been removed. I expect better from a Sykes-let house. Sykes used to have a good reputation for the quality of their properties but times must have changed as this is one of the poorest holiday lets I have ever rented.

We have recently returned from a two week stay at Postman’s Cottage which is tastefully decorated and very well equipped (-there was even a box of toys for the dog!

) Ruth had also left some welcome treats which were much appreciated. The courtyard garden was lovely and also secure for the dog. Whilst you can park in the road outside the property, the street is very narrow which may be a bit tight for a larger car and sometimes it can get busy but there is a car park literally around the corner which costs £3.30 for 24 hours-we found that we used this on a couple of occasions. The car park also adjoins a playing field which was useful for exercising the dog in the mornings. The house is literally 5 mins walk from the station (no disturbance from trains) and a large Tesco stores which was very handy. It’s a 10/15 min walk into the town centre/harbour. The Old Ship pub close by has a lovely beer garden which could easily go undiscovered and is dog friendly. Prior to travelling to Bridlington we had downloaded a Treasure Trail treasure hunt from the internet for Bridlington Old Town which was really good fun and we discovered places that we may otherwise have missed -like the Pack Horse pub. Would also recommend a trip to see the puffins at Bempton Cliffs and a trip to Filey which is a dog friendly beach but watch out for the seals! Would definitely recommend a stay at Postman’s Cottage.

Postman’s cottage is fabulous, with a cosy feel but spacious and beautifully decorated with everything you need and more.

There’s obviously lots of thought and care gone into making it a holiday home to suit everyone. The seating in the conservatory is lovely and a nice spot for a morning cup of tea while watching the birds in the garden. The garden is a beautiful sun trap with seating in different areas to follow the sun throughout the day. The washing facilities and downstairs shower room is great if you have those in your party who are not as mobile to get up and down the stairs to get to the bathroom often. The beds are so comfy we all slept really well while there. It is in an excellent location, halfway between the harbour and the old town, an easy 10 minute stroll either way, with plenty of amenities such as shops, cafes and nice local pubs just around the corner. Ruth, the owner, was lovely to speak to, so thoughtful and helpful, letting us know when the cottage was ready as well as giving lots of helpful advice regarding access, parking and events and things to see in the area during our stay. Postman’s Cottage will be our first choice when looking to stay in Bridlington again as it is wonderful and suits our needs perfectly.
