What our customers say about their holidays

    • Saskia - Verified booking

Dookers Hoose is a characterful and charming seaside retreat and was the perfect location for our family holiday.

The house feels very welcoming and has a creative ambiance with artwork by the owner and family decorating the walls, a mix of vintage and modern furniture, books, games and window ledges decorated with seashore finds. This feels more of a home than just a holiday let, situated in Cullen Sea Town with its soft colourful walls, pantiles and tiny gardens at every turn. We loved being able to hear the sea from the house. We enjoyed cooking in the stylish and well-appointed kitchen and were very pleased to find so much space for storing supplies as well as an efficient washing machine. The layout of the ground floor makes it a very sociable space and on cooler evenings, we enjoyed the electric ‘wood burning’ stove which created a cosy atmosphere. We brought some solar powered fairy lights with us for added twinkle. The internet was consistently reliable and we did not for one moment miss having a TV. The little table in the front room was a perfect spot for drawing, painting and writing. We brought bikes, body boards and wetsuits and were delighted to have access to the garage for storage as well as clothes lines which made drying wet kit easy. In front of the garage and opposite the front of the house across a narrow, quiet side road is the small outdoor garden space with a picnic table. This was a lovely sunny spot to sit with morning coffee and a book watching the world go by. Just across the shore road lies the sea wall with steps down to a lovely stretch of sandy beach which is perfect for safe swimming and provides access to long walks along the shore. The steps on the sea side of the wall are a great place to sit with a drink and enjoy the huge skies and stunning sunsets. On your return from a swim, you can enter the little back yard through a gate and access the conveniently placed bathroom with shower. There are lovely coastal walks (or runs) from the house and we saw dolphins on several occasions from paths scented with bracken and wild thyme. The surrounding countryside is beautiful by bike and car, and there are many interesting places to visit. Supplies can be found in Cullen itself where there is a reasonably stocked Co-op and we noticed a deli opening soon. There is an amazing fresh fish shop in nearby Buckie and you may catch your own sea trout from the pier if the seals don’t get there first! If you prefer not to cook your own, the fish and chips in Cullen are consistently good. Any queries during our stay were answered quickly and the visitor’s book is brimming with information on local eateries and places of interest logged by the owners and visitors over the years. A lovely stay and we were sad to leave.

We were contacted well ahead of scheduled arrival with instructions for key and use of cottage.

We were party of 5 in our 70’s. Every one of us was highly impressed by the modernisation and decor of the cottage. It was spotlessly clean, beds comfortable, no noise. Plenty kitchen utensils mugs. dishes, pots etc Dishwasher, machine microwave all brand new. Bedding freshly laundered. All the home tastefully decorated. The owner was in touch a few times over the few days and proved very helpful. Especially appreciated is the en suite in every room plus one further bathroom upstairs. Just a few steps from the waterfront and harbour . Short walk to local amenities and a few excellent hotels serving delicious food and a few takeaway restaurants. Excellent and challenging 18 hole golf course yards away with lovely clubhouse and regular entertainment. Dolphin and osprey watch within 20 mile. Thoroughly recommend the cottage plus the 2 bedroom Eider Cottage attached. Thanks to the owner for making our stay so thoroughly enjoyable. We will revisit Sandpiper.

We come every year to cullen staying in various cottages from various sites - never before have we had such a terrible experience.

The stay itself was lovely although it was odd the owner turning up on our doorstep one day unannounced and felt like we were being checked up on. It was on our return that things turned very sour. We were blamed for multiple reports of a damage that we were not responsible for. In addition to this although we agreed to pay for repairs as we were unable to prove otherwise, the owner invoiced us for total replacement of these. Eg a few broken bed slats - invoiced for a new bed. Some biro on a cushion - invoiced for 2 new cushions. They took our entire £350 bond. We are shocked and disgusted that Sykes and the owner could be so unreasonable. Will never use either again. Avoid at all costs - Sykes offer no protection for the customer and this owner has scammed us out of £350. Nice enough cottage but just not worth it. AVOID.

      Grace Cottage was lovely.

clean, very well fitted out and much more spacious than we anticipated. The ground floor Kingsize bed was cosy and beautifully comfortable. The upstairs bedrooms were not used. For an October visit the heating system was easy to operate and very effective. The garden was useful when our two grandchildren visited from Buckie. We loved the antique furniture around the house. One concern was the knobs across the top of the oven which became dangerously hot on the one occasion when the oven was used. And a sieve to trap coffee grounds from going down the drain would have been helpful. Parking outside the cottage was useful if a little tricky. The owners were extremely helpful when we got trapped by Storm Babette (Which was not their fault of course). Apart from the storm it was a really good stay. Thank you owners.

We had a fantastic week at Sandpiper cottage.

The cottage was perfect in every way, it had everything you would need for a comfortable family stay. You can tell it has recently been recently renovated and the finish and styling really suited the location and surroundings perfectly. The owner got in touch before we arrived to ensure we had all the information we needed and to let us know they were available if required for any help, that was a really nice touch. The location of the cottage and area itself was fantastic, for us it was a last minute choice in an area we hadn't explored before, we will be back, I just hope Sandpiper cottage will be available the next time. We have been to lots of cottages over the years this was the best so far.
