What our customers say about their holidays

    • Geoff - Verified booking

We stayed at High Legh for a week from Friday 5th July and my complaint mainly concerns what we found on arrival although, for completeness, I have added some other hopefully helpful comments at the end of this note.

This was our second visit – the first being two and a half years ago. Knowing the property, my wife and I arrived before the rest of our party as we needed to get the house ready for a special birthday celebration. The rooms were very clean with many things as before but there was a significant problem with the freezer in the kitchen. We had brought food with us which we needed to quickly freeze after our journey. However the freezer was unusable because of dirty solidified ice and huge bags of ice cubes welded to the shelves and compartments. My wife had to semi defrost the freezer rather than complete more urgent tasks in order to get any of our food into the freezer. This took her over of 3 hours during which time the rest of the family arrived including four grandchildren, all 5 or under. The freezer had not been inspected for some time as the build-up of ice and a broken flap to the bottom compartment hadn’t just happened recently. The only solution is probably for the owners to buy a new self-defrosting freezer or for the cleaning staff to defrost the current freezer in the 5 hour window they have between visitors but taht may not be feasible. This was our main complaint about the property this time, but it has to be said although we tried both the mobile number provided by the owner plus a Sykes contact number that evening, neither produced a reply. The information left for visitors is insufficient or inaccurate with too much included about another property abroad rather than helping someone navigate and feel at ease in High Legh. That was unhelpful but I need to mention to you that the quality of various things had noticeably deteriorated since we first visited when we felt like we were like the very first visitors. Back in 2021 it was immaculate and so smart. Sadly, I guess other visitors don’t treat the possessions of others as we do – we always respect a holiday let as we would our own home. For your (and the owners) information a few things we noticed during the week that certainly need remedial action/attention are • Our grandchildren aged 2-5 were at risk of being badly stung by nettles in retrieving balls from behind the basketball hoop etc. For families this is unacceptable and needs addressing immediately. • The foot of the garden table at the bottom of the garden has rusted away making it quite unstable. • The boules court needs a good weed - it looks very tatty and not liek the pictures. • The edge of the cover to the hot tub is ripped in places where people haven’t folded it back with care and in the right way • One settee in the lounge has a broken leg plus the legs of the various drinks tables are very wonky. We actually feel rather sorry for the owners as a fantastic property is now showing signs of aging and misuse by visitors but frankly they need to think about reinvesting in it to restore it to its former glory.

What an amazing place to stay!

There are four cottages at Lower Farm Cottages to choose from of varying sizes. We booked one of the smaller one bedroom cottages called “The Dairy” it was very spacious had a luxury super king size bed but it could be split into a twin and even had a Hot Tub as well! The cottage was lovely and clean and everything you could need was supplied such as beds made up on arrival, towels & tea-towels provided. Basket of essentials such as teabags, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar, milk, biscuits and even a bottle of Prosecco to enjoy…… It’s set in peaceful countryside and you can hear the birds chirping around you. The Cottages are owned by Matt and his family and they live just next door. Matt made us feel very welcome and he was very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The cottage is within a few minutes drive of lots of attractions such as Ice Cream Farm, Blue Planet Aquarium, New Brighton Beach, BeWildered and Chester its self or further afield to Liverpool or into Wales plus many more places. There’s also lots to do at the cottage like visiting the animals, watching the wildlife cams on the cottage tv of the birds on the feeders, the resident barn owls and more. There is also a sculpture trail/display in the orchard that guests can exclusively visit and enjoy, it tells a story of life at Lower Farm Cottages and the family the family’s dog Fudge. The trail is based on a book that has been written by the family’s friends and has now been published to raise donations for Alder Hey Hospital. We will be returning very soon and this will now be our place to get away and de-stress. Well Done Matt & Rachel all involved the cottages and the surroundings are lovely and a credit to you all and it’s a big 10/10 from us

We have had an absolutely fantastic few days at Legh Oaks farm.

The whole house was warm and inviting as we arrived and was spotlessly clean. It was a definite wow factor as we walked in. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable and the fact that they all had access to a bathroom was a bonus. The kitchen was well equipped and a great space for family meals. The hot tub was clean and ready to use on arrival. We would definitely recommend this to friends and family. However there were a few things that we noticed straight away, that need addressing for future visitors which they probably already know about, otherwise we would have given it 5 stars. We realise that it’s very popular and that there might not have been time to keep up with small maintenance jobs in between rentals. The microwave door cover kept popping up , it just needs some strong glue, we had to put a few strips of tape on it. There were no kitchen scissors, thats about the only utensil missing. The freezer had draw doors either missing or broken. The flush button in the downstairs bathroom was loose. The small tables in the living room were very unstable. The wicker garden set had no parasol and two of the chairs were unsafe as the seats had worn through. It is worth mentioning that none of the above affected how much we enjoyed your property. These are all things that can easily be put right but needed mentioning, as you have a wonderful property that can be worthy of 5 stars in the future. Highly recommend!

Lovely place! Just returned from a 2 night say at The Parlour with 6 family and friends. The parlour is beautiful, very clean, well equipped and the host Paul and Zuzana are really lovely. The house was a perfect space for us to celebrate my cousins 30th birthday, the hot tub is great and the Bluetooth speakers were very easy to connect and worked. (Unlike a lot of places I have visited before where the speakers didn’t work). The view from the hot tub and open plan dining/kitchen is beautiful and can be taken in whilst having a soak, enjoying a morning coffee or whilst dining at the large kitchen table. The mezzanine is a great space to spend that time to relax and unwind after a walk up Helsby hill or just to chill out, it is very cosy. The rooms are brilliant great sizes again well equipped with wardrobes or draws, (only complaint here is it would be handy to have a mirror in the upstairs bedrooms). The beds are very comfy and all 7 of us slept very well. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into the space to ensure the guests stay is perfect and works for all guest staying and offers space to socialise together or some time to sit alone reading a book. Whether you are looking for a weekend break with all adults or longer with your children I would highly recommend The Parlour.

Our stay at The Parlour was nothing short of spectacular.

Myself and 6 other friends stayed here for a 3 day staycation and it completely exceeded our already high expectations. The house was uniquely designed with an upstairs open plan view of the lower floor, The Parlour is absolutely stunning with a huge outside field with a spacious hot tub (which was cleaned daily), an incredibly comfortable bed, stunning living space with cosy woodburner and a fully equipped kitchen, not to mention the well cleaned bedrooms and bathrooms. The weather was cold during our stay but that just made The Parlour feel like more of a safe haven, with the log fire and underfloor heating and peacefulness of the gated location. The owners Paul and Zuzana have done the most incredible job with this hot tub holiday cottage and are both absolutely lovely, with frequent communication and bottle of Prosecco upon arrival. We were also granted a later check out as some of my friends trains were not until later in the day. There's plenty to entertain nearby but also have the options of board games/ surround sound speakers and multiple other activities, including a pub just across the road. We had an amazing stay, and we can't wait to return already!!
