What our customers say about their holidays

    • Catherine - Verified booking

Stayed for one week in Benfield with parents and our toddler.

We SO wanted to love this place after the great reviews on here and the pretty pictures. However, as charming as the cottage was, we couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed with a few elements. Let’s start with the good stuff. As I said, the cottage is utterly charming and the rural decor makes it welcoming and cosy. The downstairs space is great – it was nice to have ‘zones’, so in a big group you can separate off either into the front room, the dining area or the conservatory. They’re connected enough to not be isolating, so you can still chat from each room, but you’re not all cooped up in one communal area. The beds were really comfortable. As other reviews have commented, the road is busy and noisy, making it impossible to open the windows on a hot evening, but with some ear plugs, the less light sleepers among us had a good night’s sleep. The location was perfect for enjoying the many delights the Cotswolds has to offer. We did way more than we anticipated because there was so much on the doorstep and Stow-on-the-Wold itself is gorgeous, with lots of pretty little shops and some great pubs. On the downside, the courtyard area was unclean. Not sure when it was last swept, but the paving was dirty and the bench and cushions were filthy - making it pretty unappealing to sit out there. It’s such a shame because it could be a really great addition to the house, but at the moment it’s a real waste of the space. A large chunk of it is taken up by the Wheelie bin, which itself wasn’t quite big enough for a week’s worth of rubbish for a group of seven. Appreciate space is limited, but it could’ve been better organised. Maybe some housing around the bin. There was also no recycling bin, so everything ended up in one place. We didn’t expect there to be an Aga and no traditional oven (there’s a microwave, and mini oven in the pantry). While it was very beautiful, we had to rethink our evening meals somewhat and it made the downstairs area very hot on a warm summer’s day (it’s not advisable to turn off as it takes such a long time to heat up again). There was a wide array of crockery, utensils and cookware in the kitchen, but quite a few hadn’t been washed properly. The bathroom on the first floor has a beautiful roll top bath, but only a handheld shower head with no curtain or screen. So no matter how careful you were, the bathroom got soaked with water splashing either off the bath or your body. The bathroom on the second floor had such a low wattage bulb in it, we had to keep the door open to see what we were doing. We had a good experience with the owner - very prompt responses - and we were very grateful to be allowed to check in an hour early, but on the whole the cottage itself is currently a bit disappointing in places.

On arrival at the old Brew House it was very quaint and because of its location was a good base to explore Chipping Campden and the surrounding area Once in the property and settled it became apparent it wasn’t quite the cosy little cottage we expected On settling down for the evening we lit the log burner which the door didn’t seal properly so for the rest of the holiday the was a Smokey and soot smell so we didn’t use this anymore The living room furniture was uncomfortable and in a poor state of repair due to clasped springs and arms of the chairs being worn with the stuffing coming out The light above the cooking hob did not work The was a bowl on the floor under the hand basin in the bathroom to catch the water that leaked this had been happening for some time due to the colour of the bowl and the skirting and wasn’t pleasant to look at when using the bathroom The was a glass with a crack in it left on the shelf with all the other glasses and crockery this wasn’t spotted until one of my party had started drinking from it In one of the bedrooms one of the window V-lux blinds was broken and would not hold down to keep closed so we had to improvise and tie it down each night to the window handle to keep it closed This was reported to the owner and also the house keeper and it was apparent that they knew about it and it had been like it for some time and felt I was just being brushed off The house keeping throughout the property was quite poor the was a large build up of dirt and dust underneath the living room furniture and as all the furniture was on castors they could have been moved to clean with ease Overall I and my party thing the property is very overrated for the money paid and would feel it would be in your interest to oversee the property before letting it out on your books in the future that’s why I feel it is only a 3 out of 5

Our stay at Jacdaw Cottage was wonderful!

The hosts decorated the house beautifully for the Christmas season, and we were welcomed to a clean and cosy home. The property was furnished with stylish and original features, and we found the beds, sofa, and chairs to be extremely comfortable. The hosts were very generous in leaving us a Pannetone, juice, and fruits as a welcoming treat. The warmth of the house and the logs provided for the fireplace made the Christmas feel even more special. The kitchen had everything we needed for our short trip, and we were able to cook a delicious Christmas meal using the oven. The bathroom was also completed to a high standard and had a lovely rainfall-style shower head. The bathroom is the only bathroom, which is shared among all guests. The property can comfortably accommodate four people and a dog. The car parking space was also very convenient, and we were able to park our small MPV with ease. Previous reviews have commented on the parking and we had no issues with this. We found it easier to reverse down the very quiet T road and parking in the space. Otherwise, if you aren't a confident parker, you can park on the main road and it is a 20-second walk to the property, down the slope. The village of Blockley is picturesque and typical Cotswold look and stone properties. The village has two pubs, a small café, and an excellent shop that sells local food items. We particularly enjoyed visiting the Great Western Arms (a less than 2 min walk from Jacdaw cottage), which is dog friendly and had a great selection of food and drinks and very friendly, welcoming staff. Overall, we had a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas stay at Jacdaw Cottage, and we highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. We would happily and look forward to booking this beautiful cottage again.

So here is the positives- the building, stone floors, beams, pieces of beautiful furniture Negative that really ruined our holiday.

Before we went and due to finances we planned to eat in most of the time. My husband has asthma and uses an inhaler, as soon as we arrived and opened the door there was a really overpowering smell of air freshener. There was numerous bottles of liquid air freshener containing the bamboo sticks, the smell was so strong and sweet that you could taste it when you was drinking. I removed numerous bottles, some even in plant pots of flowers. My husband really suffered with his breathing and used his inhaler several times a day. As we have been going to the cotswolds for 20 years this was supposed to be a restful time spent in the cottage but due to the smell even when I had moved the airfreshners outside we had to spend as much time as possible out of the cottage, which also meant eating out every night which isn’t what we wanted to do. Even though I moved them outside the yard area is very small so even when I had shut the door you could still smell them. I’m sure some more must have been buried in the house that I couldn’t find A few other small things there is that much stuff in the cottage you really lose the beauty of it it’s as if there has been a need to fill every space with something. There is well over 20 spoons, knifes and forks, lost count of how many bowls and coffee pots, what this also did was leave lack of space should you want to food shop and store I contacted Sykes and they was very good and offered to send someone round but there wasn’t anything they could do that I hadn’t Such a shame our holiday was ruined

This is a beautiful, mostly comfortable cottage.

The beds were comfortable. The sofas and armchairs were comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and had a good-sized shower cubible with good water pressure. Wifi coverage in the house was good. The fridge is only a small larder fridge, so don't buy too much food. We stayed here for a week in January and found the house quite cold even with all of the electric heaters switched on. We definitely needed to put the fire on. A basket was full of logs when we arrived, which was enough for fires on two afternoons - although we were not supplied with any fire lighters so had to go buy our own. Many cottages provide a welcome pack of say a pint of milk and a pack of biscuits, but none was provided here - so make sure you bring whatever you need to make a tea or coffee. Most cottages have instructions on recycling, but there were none here. I would have liked instructions in the manual on recycling. I did have a question for the company that manages the cottage: there's a name and mobile phone number prominently displayed in the cottage. I texted the number on Saturday and had yet to receive a reply 6 days later - so I was disappointed by the customer service provided by the company that manages the cottage. However, the property itself was clean and comfortable. The local pub was buzzy and had a simple but good menu. The local cafe was dog friendly downstairs. The NISA shop next door to the cafe had a decent range of products at reasonable prices, too. Overall, we enjoyed our trip very much.
