What our customers say about their holidays

    • Andrew - Verified booking

Well the view is outstanding, possibly the best view we have had since renting holiday property in the UK.

The accommodation is pricey, but we think the view was well worth it. Watching the boats cruise up and down all day long from the balcony is what the holiday was all about. Easy access walking into Dartmouth too, and many pubs and restaurants to choose from. More than enough space for a small family although the lower staircase is quite steep so is probably less suited to the very young or elderly. Everything was clean and tidy and the small welcome packs on arrival were great to see. It is mentioned on the advert and has been mentioned by previous occupants, but the building noise can be intrusive and especially when it starts early in the morning. The wifi also cuts out regularly and then can be a few minutes before it gets back up and running again. The biggest let down though is the parking. There are confident comments on the advert that you can relax with the parking offered. However, for a large car you will have only mm to spare driving down to the garaging area. You will also be met by a sign saying reverse in, and turning round is quite a challenge. If you have a small or medium car you have half a chance. There is room for two small to medium cars to park but once our car was in the garage there was literally only space for a smart car behind it, certainly not suitable for two large cars. On occasion there was a van parked in the turn round area, meaning there was just enough space to drive in let alone turn around. Part way through the holiday bags of building materials were left at the back of the garage meaning it would have been impossible to park two cars. We felt that the advert didn’t adequately describe the parking situation. If you have a long car I would think twice about this venue. That being said the view was just about enough to calm me down after the parking issues each day. Also worth noting that someone had left an ipad behind which seemed a bit random.

Brightley Mill Barn is an exceptional property and the owners, Mandy and Nick, were really friendly and very helpful.

I travel around the UK and the rest of the World extensively for work and leisure and I can honestly say this is one of the best places I have stayed. For a family holiday it was perfect. Key collection is really convenient via a key safe system that the owners tell you the combination for on the day. There is parking 2 meters from the front door so really convenient for getting all that food shopping into the property (there is a Waitrose, Coop and Lidl all nearby). The barn conversion is brilliant - very well appointed to a high standard and we immediately felt comfortable, relaxed and at home. The cleanliness of the Barn on our arrival was simply impeccable. I am very fussy about these things and it felt like we were the first to stay. There is underfloor heating throughout and a woodburner in the living room. The kitchen is really well fitted with oven, hob, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave and fridge freezer. Granite work surfaces and a large butler sink - couldn't ask for more. The main living space has very comfortable clean furniture and a large flatscreen TV. The bathroom has a large roll top bath and large walk-in shower/wet room. Bedrooms are really comfortable. I can't recommend this property enough, my family and I will definitely be returning. It was a chance discovery by us, booked last minute and what a find.

We stayed at Galvayne earlier this year, we really like the property hence booking again for July.

In March building works were underway below Galvayne and didn’t interfere with our enjoyment of the property. So we didn’t have any concerns in rebooking and could understand why building works in the area was point 6 out of 7. However this time the building work was extremely noisy from heavy machinery digging up concrete and the few occasions this went silent a very large circular saw was used, this from about 7:30 to 4:30 each weekday, having what amounts to a major construction site does not equate to building works in the area. I recorded the noise but know nothing would be done as Sykes will feel they are covered, when we checked out I spoke to the staff when I took the key back, they apologised profusely, I offered to play an example of the noise level and was told not necessary but that they would let the owner know and I would hear back. Needless to say that hasn’t happened being as I suspected something to say to get me on my way. So in summary we still think Galvayne itself is great but the surrounding noise isn’t, we may have been unlucky but I don’t think it’s been handled well or as advised by the key holding office.

We loved everything about Galvayne and found it the perfect place to stay for the two of us.

The property on arrival was beautifully clean, everything as per the website photos, beautifully presented in all respects. The views were both exceptional and mesmerising. Having onsite parking was a huge benefit. Thank you for the welcome bottle of Sharpham wine which was delicious, so much so, we purchased several bottles from the very excellent Dartmouth Wines, along with others we discovered whilst dining out during our stay, so a good advertisement for the wine! A couple of small things: The little welcome box of treats included a small bag of Haribos, 3 tea bags and 3 coffee sticks/sugar sticks which felt a little half hearted. It would be useful to provide 2 extra black bin liners (only 1 spare provided) since it is a double bin in the kitchen area. We realise its self catering and always come prepared, but an extra bin liner would not go amiss. We put all our wine bottles in with the general paper recycling and hope this was ok for the contractors, we did notice that the property outside refuse bin had a number of glass beer bottles in it already, presumably left by a prior visitor.

The cottage was OK, we were aware the owners may not be there and if the case key would be in the door and this was the case.

It was disappointing that having read previous reviews there was no welcome pack like we had had in other cottages. The property would benefit from a banister attached to the wall re the staircase. The information folder read more like a rules and regulation folder which was off putting, most people renting a cottage would be respectful anyway and not leave appliances on or the heating on unless needed. The TV was rather temperamental as either the aerial needed adjusting or the TV was in its way out as there was a lot of interference on it in the evenings. The fridge freezer was also noisy and could be heard downstairs in the bedroom. The location was peaceful and lovely views across the fields. Only approach via the road from Great Torrington which is opposite the church as all other approaches the roads are very poor quality and really shake the car and occupants.
