      A lovely weekend away.

Mostly positive feedback with just one criticism... Gill and Malcolm's cottage is absolutely beautiful, and set in stunning surroundings. The views from the upstairs lounge are really gorgeous. There's a wonderful mix of old and new, with great original features and all the mod-cons, including 3 luxurious bathtubs. The decor is modern with stunning furnishings - the dining table is huge and very unique. The beds are lovely and comfy, and even the smallest room is a decent size. There's plenty of room here for large groups. The 4 bathrooms are a real bonus for friends and family staying together, also. More than sufficient crockery and cooking apparatus' is provided for large groups, and the property includes all key electrical appliances you may need. Gill was a good host who responded quickly to a query one of our guests sent by text during our stay. She also ensured the £200 bond was paid back promptly on our departure day. Some useful literature about the home and local area had been left for us, as well as a much appreciated bottle of wine! Saint Briavels itself is a quaint little village, a 10 minute walk away from the cottage (the walk is a little hilly but perfectly manageable for most without mobility issues). We visited the George Inn for Sunday lunch and would highly recommend this! The one issue we had with the property was the parking. The driveway to the property is incredibly steep and turns at a sharp right angle which leads on to single-track, dead end. We managed to just squeeze 4 cars into it, but it meant no one could move from the parking area bar the last person to arrive without some chaotic jostling around, which we avoided purely for convenience sake. I really don't like leaving anything negative in a review (especially when everything else was so lovely) but I think the parking arrangements should be better explained in the property advertisement. This property may not be suitable for guests with perhaps older or less powerful cars - due to the steepness of the driveway, two of our cars really struggled up to the parking area, to the point you could smell burning very strongly. One of these cars broke down not far from the cottage on departure day with a burnt out clutch. We loved our stay, bar the parking issue, and with this exception I would highly recommend Gill and Malcolm's property. One thing to note for prospective guests (and this is not a criticism but a 'good to note'), the property does not come with essential food stuffs (i.e. condiments, salt and pepper, tea, coffee, milk, cooking oil, clingfilm) or shower gel/shampoo like most 'home from home' properties do nowadays, so you will need to bring your own. It's not a problem, but it's good to know so that you can pack these things.

A lovely cottage in a stunning location!

We have just returned from a week at The Cottage. As a party of 4 adults, 2 children and a dog, this suited us really well, with multiple spaces for us all to make the most of, without falling over each other, even on the bad weather days! The main living area is spacious and easily accommodated us all, even when we hosted relatives who live locally, for a birthday celebration. The owner responded quickly to a query we had on our arrival. There are footpaths straight from the door. We especially loved the walk in the wooded area Victuals Grove. Just perfect! The house was clean, warm and comfortable. The photos are a good representation of the actual house. The patio has actually been extended and provides plenty of seating for everyone. The kitchen was well equipped with utensils and cleaning products but unfortunately lacked all of the everyday items that were needed. No cooking oil, cling film, foil, pepper (there was a salt pot), tea, coffee etc. This made for a bigger shop than anticipated and was rather frustrating since we had specifically asked the owner about such items prior to going, since we arrived on Good Friday and were preparing for not being able to shop until the next day. Whilst we would never expect owners to provide food and drink things for the full stay, a small amount for the first morning would have been great. The welcome bottle of wine was very much appreciated, but a pint of milk would have been more useful! A few things could be done to make the place even better: The coffee maker needs cleaning and descaling but we could not do this due to a missing piece. A small tool kit would have been very useful as there were several things around the place with loose screws and bolts. Towels were provided but they were not bath towels, so if you want a large one you will need to bring your own. The garden is not securely fenced. Bear this in mind if your dog wanders (luckily ours does not, but having to take her out on a lead in the dark would have been a pain). As noted in other reviews, the parking is interesting!! The surfaced driveway could definitely do with being widened. Our 4WD was ok but the other car struggled to stay on the surfaced area and get around the tight turn at the top. The parking area itself is very muddy. The property write up lists a study with TV. I honestly have no idea what this refers to!

We've had a lovely stay at St Briavels at The Cottage.

It was perfect for our family holiday. We took walks right from the front door through beautiful woodlands. There is plenty to see and do in the area with historic castles and Roman ruins a plenty within a short drive. Favourites were Tintern Abbey and Symond's Yat. The house itself had lots of space for us. With a ten year old and her Grandmas in the mix, having two TV rooms was useful. We loved loved loved the views from the observation room. Absolutely stunning. The bedrooms were airy. Having four bathrooms was great as my mum and mother in law didn't have to share with us! As we were with Grandmas, I know a roomy walk in shower would have been preferable to shower/baths in the upstairs bathrooms. The only walk in shower is a small one and located downstairs. This was fine, just if you are planning an update! We also felt it was a bit dusty in places especially upstairs. It was clean in all the important places. These are minor things. The house felt like a home and I imagine the owners love spending time there too. It was well equipped with plenty of pots and pans as well as utensils like cheese graters that might not be in a holiday stay. The coffee machine takes nespresso capsules and there were some French press cafetieres for those of us that like fresh coffee. We would recommend The Cottage and St Briavels to anyone who wanted to enjoy the fabulous scenery and interesting places in the Wye Valley. Wonderful.

Myself and my family had booked the getaway before covid hit.

With having to move the date to a year later due to the pandemic we couldn’t wait to finally go away on our mini break! The picturesque location and beautiful cottage did not disappoint. We booked the cottage to be with the family and the layout of the cottage was amazing. We spent some evenings downstairs in the cozy lounge and kitchen and another evening in the games room. There was space to get away and very sociable spaces for us to be all together at breakfast and dinner. The cleanliness of the cottage was amazing. The cottage has such a cozy feel to it. The pictures don’t do the place justice. There isn’t much around the area but with the cottage and the couple of days we were there we were happy to go for walks and stay in. We walked to the pub down the road one day and had a delicious roast dinner. This was our first break in a long time and it has made us want to go back! We will definitely be booking again! Thank you to the amazing owners who were in contact with us a week before we arrived to answer any questions we had. On another note we travelled with a 1 year old and the travel cot, high hair and stair gate they had made our stay so much easier. Thank you again! We couldn’t have asked for a better break! ☺️ Vicky Lowe and family

We had to leave early because I became unwell.

The couple who own the annex are very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. The cottage is ideal for 2 for a week and close to the Forest of Dean which is beautiful. Also just a 10 minute drive away is a lovely hotel called The Speech House which we visited twice in our short stay, once for coffee and cake taken in the Orangery and one evening for a relaxing pint. Highly recommended as it is a lovely old building with very friendly staff. There are several good places to visit such as Ross on Wye, Monmouth and Gloucester. We also visited tbe beautiful church of St. Mary's in Fownhope for their flower festival, which was an absolute delight. Three small negatives regarding the cottage. I have a very limited diet so take all my own food on holiday and there is no cupboard in the small kitchen to store food. A good fridge freezer and cooker and everything else one needs but a food cupboard would help. The shower would gradually fill with water because the hair trap needed cleaning. And Cinderford is a narrow, hilly town so driving can be difficult and finding the cottage on arrival was a bit difficult but was overcome by phoning the owner. Don't let it put you off though as the small garden is ideal for relaxing in and it has beautiful views.
