What our customers say about their holidays

    • Julie - Verified booking

Unfortunately we didn't receive a very warm welcome.

We booked the cottage in Jan and it was listed as dog friendly so we booked and paid for our small dog to come too. When I called to get key info the day before our arrival the owner said it would be ready for 4 and they would be in the door. (listing said ready for 3, but hey ho). She said she was busy and would come to see us on Mon morning. We arrived just after 4 and had just un packed the car when the owner turned up. On seeing our dog who was just sniffing around getting her bearings, the owner proceeded to tell us dogs not allowed in the bedrooms, hadn't we read their policy, had we brought blankets to cover the furniture at which point I said she doesn't go on the furniture. She then proceeded to tell us how much damage people and their dogs had caused and that was why she was no longer a dog friendly accommodation. All this time she stood with the patio door open, I asked twice if she wouldn't mind closing it so that our dog couldn't get out as the large gate onto the road was open. This was ignored and so I had to take my dog into the kitchen. We didn't receive any instructions on how to operate equipment at the property or how to find the badger cam that we'd read about. No friendly recommendations of nice places to go. The only info shared was negativity about our dog and how we must shower before using the hot tub. Just as well it is no longer dog friendly as the fields surrounding the cottage were beautiful and full of animals, but unfortunately no pavements on the road and no paths explained or found where we could walk the dog. On another subject we found it odd that there was a full sized dishwasher but only 4 cups, 4 plates 4 bowls 4 side plates. Very nice that the crockery was Denby, but again a negative note in the cupboard warning that any chips or cracks would be chargeable. Even worse that the kitchen sink was pot. Simple white crockery in abundance would have been preferable and more conducive to a relaxing break. We felt she had her priorities wrong and would have appreciated settees with more comfortable and supportive cushions. One of the seats in the jacuzzi was brown and the plastic coating was peeling off so we couldn't use it. It would have been helpful if there had been a folder with information about how to take the cover off the jacuzzi, how to turn it on and off, information about the area, the WiFi code, how to control the heating, restaurants to go to, the badger cam etc. Instead we were insulted and made to feel uncomfortable, tarred with a brush meant for others who had previously caused damage.

Argyle House is a gem of a place!

Deceptive from the outside as its massive on the inside! It sits right on the see front & has amazing veiws across to the mainland. We were a party of 20, 12 adults & 8 children (ages from 5 - 17) celebrating a 50th birthday & there was enough room for everyone to have their own space, the teenagers had their own rooms which they loved as they could chill out whenever they wanted. There are 2 lovely big sitting rooms, the kids took ownership of one while the male adults chilled in the other watching football! The real hub of the house though was the massive dining room (the only room big enough to hold all of us at once) and the kitchen. The dining room overlooks the harbour & out to the mainland, it is a fabulous view! The kitchen has everything you could possibly need & there's a massive range cooker more than capable of catering for the 20 of us. Most rooms are ensuite which was a real bonus. Fantastic big garden for the kids & dogs to runaround in complemented by a hot tub sited in a very tasteful gazebo to protect you from the elements although we were very lucky as the sun shone all weekend. The owner was very welcoming, contacting us on day one, to check in with us to make sure we were happy with everything & again after check out which is a lovely touch. The neighbours and the people on the island of Bute were so friendly too, which really helped us all to feel welcome & part of the community for the short time we were there! All in all a lovely house in a lovely location, I would definitely recommend it for a large group.

We have visited Netherraw for three years running however, sadly this will be the last time.

As a positive if you want isolation and great night skies and walks on your doorstep, Netherraw is perfect. There is hardly any noise, so you can hear the wildlife all around you. The upstairs bedrooms now have hangers for your clothes and ample drawer space. Sadly, the negatives we found were numerous. The shower basin easily flooded and water spilled over on to the floor. The only way to avoid this was to turn the shower on get wet, turn the shower off, lather up and then rinse off. Which isn't what you expect to do. This was raised last year when we came, but nothing has been done, in fact it is worse. The extractor fan isn't strong enough to cope with the steam in the shower room, so we had to leave the door open for it to escape. Not ideal but thankfully there was only the two of us. The toilet seat in the shower room, the laminate is cracked underneath and looks like it would soon start to peel off. The hot tube was part of the attraction of going to Netherraw, especially after long walks. On the second day we removed the hot tubs cover only to find that the headrests were damaged through wear and tear, their coverings were cracked and in some places none existent exposing the foam/cushioning underneath - so we decided not to use it. The overall feeling for us was that through usage the cottage just needs a bit of TLC.

Wonderful New Year spent at Braemore Cottage, exploring both both Lewis and Harris.

The Cottage is perfectly located to go North and South, with breath-taking views over the Tarbert inlet, day after day we watched glorious sunsets from the hot tub, before heading in, lighting the fire, and enjoying some local gin. The cottage was perfect for us a family of 4, everything you need, beds very comfortable, and did I mention the hot tub! Hazel and Findley, the owners, stay locally, and are so welcoming and friendly. The island is a feast of amazing wildlife - stags, seals, otters, highland cows, eagles - its everywhere, not to mention the stunning beaches, walks, and food. The water is amazing, the air clean, zero pollution, zero stress, you feel so good spending time in his incredible corner of Scotland.

A great cottage with unrivalled dramatic views.

Only 10 minutes from the Tarbert Ferry, with good local shopping and amenities, and close to great walking and sightseeing at Luskentyre, Hushinish and Scalpay. Good restaurants nearby too. The cottage itself is modern and spacious - warm and welcoming. The hot tub is an additional bonus for relaxing and taking in the views. Kitchen is well-appointed, but would maybe benefit from a bigger freezer for longer stays or during hot summer weather (which is not out of the question even in the Outer Hebrides!). The hosts are very attentive and helpful and live close enough to respond to any unexpected needs you may have. Harris is a paradise, and this cottage is right at its heart. 100% recommend!
