What our customers say about their holidays

    • Beverley - Verified booking

We spent two wonderful weeks at Red House.

On arrival we were met by Mark who went through a few things with us. The property was beautifully clean which was a lot different from the last couple of homes we have stayed in with cottages.com which were filthy. The house is set on a side of a hill with stunning views and at times, a lovely welcome breeze from the very hot but lovely weather we experienced and lovely neighbours of sheep and cows. We were provided with a lovey cake baked by a local baker which was scrumptious. The hot tub was lovely, sitting in it with a beautiful view. We knocked the temperature right down so we could cool off in it during the day but unfortunately due to the hot weather the water was pretty disgusting towards the end of the second week so if staying for two weeks in hot weather ask Mark to change the water after the first week. As Mark was away and as we had a hot tub at home, I tried to clear it with chemicals that he had but it was too far gone and we were not able to use it the last few days We usually do an online shop for when we get there but Tesco only had a late night slot and as we were staying for two weeks and wasn’t sure what would be provided, as this hadn’t been covered in other reviews, we decided to do a shop in Welshpool Tesco after we had visited the property: You have the option as well as Tesco of a Morrisons and also a Lidl. To help future guests obviously all hosts provide different things and it is always difficult to know what to take with you, we were provide with some tea bags, sugar, salt and pepper, together with a few dishwasher tablets, cleaning cloths, cleaning products and bin bags. So you will need to purchase/bring with you things like milk, cooking oil (although we did leave some there for the next guests) foil, cling film which I highly recommend to cover absolutely everything in the fridge/cupboards) condiments coffee etc I know someone mentioned about the knives and they are right they are not sharp whatsoever so I took some sharp knives with us, including a knife sharpener but I couldn’t sharpen what was there so definitely pack some decent knives and an extra frying pan, as there is only one smallish pan there, if you like a nice cooked breakfast but lots of other pots and pans there. There is also loads of plates, cutlery, mugs etc so we never run out of anything The beds and pilllows were really comfortable although one of the rooms does have a zip up bed and you can feel it is two single beds. Also abundance of towels which were large and lovely and soft Due to being on a farm with cattle and sheep and next to barns and hot weather, we were absolutely swamped with flies which get in everywhere including fridge and cupboards and was a real nuisance especially when trying to prepare food or eat. What I tended to do is shut all the doors about 3/4 hour before I was due to prepare food and spray the area with fly spray. You will still have some appear as we think they came down the chimney that is in the kitchen but a few is better than the hoards we had beforehand: We wasted about £30 on citronella items which was a waste of money so a fly swat, which are provided, and spray are the only things that work. However if eating outside the 6 citronella candles worked if you had the umbrella up, most days. It was nothing to do with the property it has been a bad year for flies and if you want the lovely views and animals then you have to take the rough with the smooth but just be warned and stock up before you go as we ended up wasting time whilst we were there tracking stuff down We used the local butches a lot which are lovely. We had a T bone and sirloin steak which was so tender/. They also do goat and barbecue stuff, eggs, limited veg etc. In the local town you have the choice of Spa or Londis which is just over the bridge. Londis we found were much better quality of vegetables. Spar vegetables were really quite poor at times There is so much to do in the area, especially if you are into nature, as I am: We saw Red kite, buzzards several times a day around the property. We did the steam train ride from the village which was also nice but recommended going first class as the seats are soooooooo comfortable otherwise you are sat on a wooden bench for 3 hours. We visited this Osprey centre and red kite feeding station which I highly recommend. We had a fantastic time and would definitely return for 3 weeks next time

This property is spectacular, just on arrival getting out the car seeing the view we didn’t care what the house was like as the pictures did not do the beauty of it justice!

But after an easy check in with Mark, meeting us as we arrived with the keys and a chat, we headed in and soon realised that the house was just as perfect. It was completely spotless and had everything we needed for the week (mugs, glasses, plates and saucepans ext), plus we had been given a Victoria sponge cake as a welcome gift so a cup of tea and a slice of that looking out over the view made for a great start. As a first holiday with 4 generations, including a 5 month old and two dogs, I was a little nervous but the house just what we needed. Having 3 bathrooms was brilliant made getting ready to go out a lot easier with the 6 of us! The enclosed garden put our minds at ease for the dogs being allowed to roam without worry. The hot tub was just the best added bonus, we made use of it everyday, Mark also came half way through our stay to check it for us and make sure it was all okay. The only thing I will say about this property is you’ll definitely need a car to get back from local village if you are not super fit, although it is only a very short distance the hill back up is a killer! The local shop had all the essentials and a bigger shop for everything else was a short 15 minute drive away. We had food in the Red Lion, it was a hidden gem, it looked like just a local drinking pub! The goat also did delicious food and was slightly more up market. The Black Lion was just a drinking pub but the locals in there are lovely all had a chat and told us recommendations of things to do in the area. On departure Mark was there emptying the hot up and giving it a clean and ready with bags of fresh linen to replace ours. He very kindly gave us extra time to get out the property as our 5 month old was still feeding so we hadn’t managed to get everything out and gone by 9am. I can’t recommend this property enough, we hope to come back again one day in the future!

The Old Mill is a unique property if you are looking for something slightly out of the ordinary.

Seeing how the property was renovated around the mill equipment was a treat. There is a booklet at the property created by the owners detailing the renovation and we found it interesting to see how the property was turned into a holiday property from almost nothing. The property is across a yard from the owners. We heard no noise from the owners or anyone else - just some cows mooing occasionally. So this was great for us as we do like peace and quiet when we are away. We found the main bedroom bed comfortable - we slept well in it. The bathroom and shower both had good water pressure and plenty of hot water. The kitchen was well-equipped with all of the cooking implements and utensils that we wanted. We were provided with items such as liquid hand soap, dishwasher tablets, tin foil and kitchen roll (which not all cottages provide!). The only thing that was disappointing was that the fridge was the smallest fridge we have experienced in a property. We found that it was big enough to contain two days' worth of food (for only two adults). So we had to plan to go to the supermarket every couple of days - otherwise all of the food might not have fit into it. The property was also clean and tidy. We stayed in the property in November and there were a couple of mornings and evenings when we found it quite cold. There is a log burner in the lounge and the owners provided two electric heaters and we did use all of these; however, the property did take a while to heat up and I'm not sure that I would describe it as the warmest place we've stayed. We had a small problem with the wifi, but Steve was ever so helpful. He had a lovely attitude and was responsive and positive - he genuinely seemed to care whether we were enjoying our stay - so thank you for that! Overall, it's a great property if you are looking for peace and quiet in an unusual building.

Everything about our holiday was 5*.

The house is amazing, the decor/all the fittings and fixtures were well designed and well thought out, creating a beautiful holiday home. The owners were incredibly helpful and extremely quick to respond to any questions we had. (Not that we had any problems!) One of the owners even met us to show us around the house when we checked it. The owners literally couldn't do enough for us and we even had a yummy locally made cake waiting for us upon arrival! The owners live very close to the accommodation, which was really nice, but they didn't intrude in any way, they even checked when we would be out, so that the lawn could be mowed. As a dog owner, I want to share how brilliant the house and surrounding area was for us. Our dog could be let off lead within the property grounds, which she loved! There was also a meadow/field directly behind the property with no livestock, and which we were allowed to take our dog... so we could let our dog off lead there with no issue. There are also fields immediately outside the house, which has cows, but as long as you have your dog on lead, there are some fantastic and beautiful walks straight out of the front door. (But often steep if you have mobility issues). The hottub was very well maintained and offered gorgeous views from inside it! The beds were super comfy! Our only regret is that we picked a rainy/stormy week, so we didn't get to make use of the amazing bifolding doors in the living room, leading out onto the front of the house....or the lovely outdoor space at the back that much, but the outdoor spaces and acess to them was perfect for a holiday..

Had a lovely stay at Red House Farm and would highly recommend.

Host was very helpful and quick to respond to queries. The rooms and garden were very spacious and well maintained. Decor was lovely, felt very warm and homely. The fire places gave a lovely touch. The house was well equipped - thoroughly thought out - lots of plates, cups and cutlery - plenty of knives and spoons but it would have been nice if there were a few more forks. An extra frying pan would have been useful especially when trying to cook a full english breakfast. Hot Tub was lovely and very relaxing. We were really fortunate, we had a couple of nights where there were no clouds so we got to see a lot of stars - absolutely stunning. Spectacular view from the living room. Pressure in the showers were good however, the jack and jill ensuite water was not as hot as the family bathroom. We stayed during the colder period and was slightly nervous that the house wouldn't be warm enough however, the heating was exceptional and kept us lovely and warm throughout our stay. Red House Farm is in a good location - few things to do around the area and routes are quite wide and easy to drive along. Llanfair Caereinion, a lovely little town which is close by (less than 5 minutes drive away) with the essentials, butchers and a pub. Welshpool was about 20 minutes drive away which had a few supermarkets, some big chain stores and lovely local shops - so if you need anything urgently it wasn't difficult to get what you needed. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Red House Farm and would definitely recommend and stay again.
